1/3rd of autistics are completely nonspeaking

most autistics will not be able to hold a job, go to college, or live on their own

autism rarely travels alone and has many medical comorbidities like epilepsy, mitochondrial disorders, and genetic disorders (which are the most common comorbidities - these aren’t rare complications.)

we can have discussions about autism and ableism and how society sees us without spreading misinformation.

autism is a lifelong, often debilitating neurodevelopmental and genetic disorder that affects how one communicates and interacts with the world. it is not “just being socially awkward” or feeling nervous in social situations. it is a neurological disability. start treating it like one.

#i agree that NTs have a tendency to infantilize our traits while also demonizing us real good #i also agree that NTs using autism as a descriptor for a quirky trait is offensive #when autism advocates speak about autism and how “we aren't actually like that” just alienates like 40% of autistic people.#it just continues to force autistic people to mask and dehumanize weird “behavior” that many of us possess.#like quite literally high functioning my ass as i do all sorts of shit that would be seen as “animalistic/non-human” by nts.#im not slow just because i suck at social cues. but im also slow at learning basic things that nts typically would pick up more easily on.#however be careful with this kind of language as it can alienate un diagnosed autists and can prevent them from receiving accommodations.#ie seeking a health care professional that can officially diagnose them and have jobs treat their needs more seriously.#and also autists who have a more optimistic view on their disability in order to cope with it and how society views them.
