The pair shouldn’t work. In fact, there were about a million reasons why they were better staying apart. But none of that mattered to Drew; did it to her? His breathing is slow and deliberate, and his once drunkenness is now a thin veil of tipsy at most. His confession was well thought out, months of secrets buried deep finally floating around in the sky and his heart dropped a bit when she turned up to look at him. Drunk? That was all his confession brought to her? He shook his head, avoiding her gaze. “No, I’m not, actually. But even if I were, drunk words are sober thoughts.” He pointed out, reminding her that his feelings wouldn’t change regardless. “I know we were, and quite frankly, we should still be together.”

Turning her body a bit more, “What about all your other people Drew? Were you just messing around with them because you were bored?” she asked. Sloane was always one to have a good time, but intimacy like that she could never do, especially constantly. Hearing him say they should be together made her eyebrows go up, “What..” she muttered out. She didn’t know if it was also her conversation with Clyde or if it was her nerves but she couldn’t believe this. “So... you want to be with me?” she asked. Her mind still racing, her eyes never leaving his, even if she had control over her body she wouldn’t have been able to stop her final action. Reaching up her hands placed on both sides of his face, her lips lightly pressing against his for a moment, finally backing up just an inch, “I missed you” breathlessly.

               “  i don’t know if love is the right word for it but i think he misses you. for whatever that’s worth, ”   before she can argue with him for bringing up he who shall not be named, he raises his hands up in defence,  “ fine. for the next few hours this is an anti-drew zone.”  he knows first hand what it’s like to be haunted by an ex with unresolved feelings and he doesn’t wish it upon anybody.  “ are you sure you can ? you’re very small ”  he jokes, eyeing her from head to toe. it’s probably bad that he finds her threats endearing.  they’ve known each other for a long time, it goes without saying that they’d fight tooth and nail to defend each other, even if the fights are over something as trivial as coffee. it’s nice to have someone like her on his corner.   “ that is … unfair, mean and only half true ! ”  he says placing his hand over his heart dramatically.  “ i know. i fucking hate this school. all that goddamn tuition money they get and they can’t hire fucking security ? ” clyde starts picking a this fingernails, he doesn’t want to look sloane in the eye when he asks the next question, “ you’re taking care of charlie, right ?  i need you to be there for her now that i can’t .” 

When Clyde pretty much said Drew didn’t love Sloane, it hurt her. It honestly made her want to cry, if it wasn’t for the joint she smoked before arriving to his house she would have let it all out. Not wanting to talk about him anymore she ignored his last statement and focused on the next one, “Hey, I might be small, but I am a fighter!” she jokingly stood up for herself. Playing with her own fingers she shrugged, “Honestly I am just surprised they haven’t shut down the school. I am going to hire a body guard just for me” she once again joked, even though that could be a true statement, she had enough money to hire one. Well her parents did anyways. Again Clydes next statement kind of hurt her, not because he wanted her to take care of Charlie, she did that regardless of him or not, but it hurt her because she knew he still had major feelings for her. Which she couldn’t blame him for, she was pretty much running after her ex too. Carefully taking his hand in hers she patted it, “You know I always take care of her. Why aren’t you just with her Clyde?” she asked looking up at him.

               “ god, i can never keep up with you two. what did he do now ? do you want me to kick his ass ? ”  he asks half-joking. from the beginning he promised everyone he wouldn’t get involved. he doesn’t think he’d ever fight his roomate, but, clyde is overprotective of the people he cares about and if drew has wronged sloane in any way he’s not afraid to give him a piece of his mind.  “ i know, right ? that’s not coffee, it’s a glorified milkshake. you’ve totally ruined my rep. ”  he sits on his bed and leans all he way back until his back hits the wall, this take-out date is exactly what he needs to relax after a long day of school.  “ not much. haven’t had time to get into any new trouble so i guess that’s good, ”  he wishes he could say more but he doesn’t feel like spending the night talking about his mess of a love life   specially the parts involving charlie. he wants to have fun and forget about his bullshit for once, “ what about you ? did you have fun at the bonfire? ”

Sloane shook her head, “No, he just told me he loved me, and like I don’t know if it is a lie or what but... lets not talk about him honestly” she said giving him a quick soft smile. Leaning back in the chair she put her heels on top of the table, “Well, if anyone talks about your coffee rep. let me know and I’ll kick their ass” she said being protective over him as well. It was always weird for Sloane because half of her liked him as family, since she has known him since she was five, but she couldn’t hide the fact that anytime she was around him her heart would beat out of her chest and her palms started to get clamy. “I’m surprised, usually you get into trouble so easily” she started then gave him a shrug, “I don’t know, kind of, but the towards the end it took a turn, then everything happened.

     “what are you talking about ? it’s actually a good thing that you weren’t there.” she said, chuckling lightly. “maybe let’s get some food ? i don’t know… i just don’t really feel like talking about it.” charlie admitted. she hadn’t really talked about it since that night when she gave her statements to the authorities and she felt like if she started talking about it now, she would not be able to stop crying. “seriously, though, thank you for coming.”

“I know technically it is, but I wish I could’ve helped” she sighed. Sloane sat up a bit and gave her a nod, “Well then we must talk about something else, like what food can I shove in your mouth? Or what can I get you to drink” she winked to the blonde. Standing up she stretched a bit looking around her room, “Oh come on, did you think I wouldn’t. You’re my baby” she smiled.

Sloane followed him, side by side till they touched the grass. Laying in his arms felt perfect, almost like a puzzle piece. As soon as Drew started telling her about his feelings she was at first shocked, drew talk about emotions? Very rare. But then her second emotion was happiness, she thought as tears weld in her eyes. Finally she turned her chin up to him and let out a deep breath. Maybe it was because their past, “you’re drunk drew” she stated. It was hard to trust him again, especially with their feelings towards one another. All she wanted to do was kiss him and tell him she loves him back, but Sloane was just too... scared. “We were together for a long time I know it’s a lot ..”

Sloane knew she should probably let go of his hand and walk on her own, but she felt so safe, secure even. Which is normally the total opposite of how she feels around him. Hearing his thoughts on the place they’d adventure to she agreed with a nod, “Yeah, that seems fun” she informed him, trying to be nonchalant about the whole thing. She started walking in the direction of the tall grass field the two have been to in the past. Walking along the path her mind was racing, she didn’t know what to say to him, “Is this weird?” that was not what she should’ve said.

The world is safe, if only for a moment, when his hand is in hers. It’s scary, sure, but it’s also comforting. He needs to be close to her, and her hand in his is the first step. As she agreed to his suggestion, he returned a wide smile as they walked across the campus until they reached somewhere a bit more secluded. Somewhere that was their, and theirs alone. The grass field welcomed them as they sank into the crass. As they began to get comfortable, his arms outstretched for her. Drew shook his head, “It’s not weird.” He promised, nuzzling his face into her neck. “You.. you should know. I can’t live without you. You’re so special to me. I’ve never stopped loving you. I’m–I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that… but I can’t help it. I love you so much. I always have. I know I get scared, but you’re the only person I feel safe around. You’re my person.”

“So” Sloane started out as she walked a bit closer to her ex “You want to know what I think is hysterical” her words slurring a bit. Even before the bonfire started the girl was throwing back shots with her neighbors in Decker. Finally Sloane was standing directly in front of Drew, “You say oh I want to be friends, I want this blah blah blah... but you’re out flirting with my best friend, and I’m sure fucking her behind my back” she scoffed. Rolling her eyes she moved around a bit more, “So thank you once again Drew!” saying louder than she probably should have.

     to say that charlotte was feeling rough was a serious understatement. truth be told, after spending a long time getting patched up by nurses and giving statements to what felt like ten thousand people, all she really wanted to do was chill out in her room and talk only to her friends. however, texting the words ‘hey so i almost got murdered last night’ was something she really did not want to do – that would make it even more real than it was. still, when sloane showed up to her room, charlie felt like a piece of her soul had reentered her body. “i’m… as okay as i can be, given the circumstances.” she admitted, shrugging. "i could really use a hug and some company, but other than that i’m okay. thank you so much for coming to see me.”

Sloane immediately took the blonde in her arms, rubbing her arm in comfort. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t there to help you” she whispered before placing a kiss on the top of her head. The girl laid beside the other in her bed, letting it be silent around them for a moment before she spoke up again, “Do you want to talk about it? Or do you want me to get you some food or something?” Slo asked in a very calm voice, one she barely ever used unless it was a situation like now.

“Well it is the first big party of the year, I think people are willing to splurge,” he joked. Though the price point between the two was pennies on the dollar. Ethan only really liked Rolling Rock more for the bright green cans. “No, no, no. That’s no way to win a game,” he shook his head. “You always got to go into a game with confidence. That’s far more intimidating to a competitor than being too humble,” he argued. If you don’t keep yourself in the right mindset you got no shot at win. Especially with a game like beer pong which was equal parts chance and skill. “Alright,” he said taking the ping pong ball and tossing it from one hand to the other in a little ritual before throwing it across the board having it sink directly into a middle cup. “See confidence is key here,” he told her grinning as he got their game off to a good start. 

Sloane nodded along with him, “You are the pro sports guy, so I’ll listen to you” she said in her defense. Watching Ethan toss the small ball into the cup Sloane raised her arms with a loud ‘woop’, “You go!” she exclaimed. After a while of the two teams going back and forth tossing the ping pong ball it was almost done. Ethan and Sloane had one more cup to sink to win the game, “Okay so, not saying I haven’t been amazing this game, but I think you should take the finally shot” saying as if they were in some dramatic movie. “You can win this for us” she insisted, laying the ball into the others hand.

                  despite his hatred for the atrocity better known as iced coffee, he swallows his pride and buys sloan the drink. he’s happy to spend his night with an old friend, however their text conversation left him feeling a bit uneasy. they haven’t made plans to hang out like this in a very long time. it’s probably weird to hang out with your ex’s best friend who also happens to be  your roommates ex and an old high school flame. however, he cares for sloane deeply and he’s not gonna stop seeing her to spare the other’s some hard feelings. he’s in the middle of cleaning up his room when the door swings open, “ hey, gorgeous, ” he greets tossing the last of his clothes in the hamper. clyde laughs and waves his hand before  answering, “ don’t worry about it. we got plenty of time. i’m pretty sure drew’s gonna be out all night.  your drink is on the counter by the way, i even took the liberty to get you a muffin, ” 

Sloane knew it wasn’t her best idea, but she wanted to see him, she wanted to hang out with him. Seeing him appear with a little nickname made her giggle, “why hello there” she said wrapping an arm around his neck. Rolling her eyes, “good, not in the mood to see him right now” mumbling under her breath. Glancing over at the drink she looked up at Clyde with her puppy eyes, “aren’t you just so cute!” Playfully pinching his cheeks. “I can’t believe you’d actually hold and walk with an ice coffee just for me!” She joked as if it was some gross bug. Walking over to the treats she quickly poked her straw through the hole, drinking it quickly. “What’s new with you?” She asked falling on his bed.

Drew was bad with relationships, and even worse with feelings. But he wanted to be better for her, wanted to give her what she needed and deserved. It was just… hard. He let out a sigh, he didn’t just want to be ‘friends’. It was a cop out, something he offered just to be close to her- not really what he wanted. “No.” He admitted finally, shaking his head. “I don’t want to go anywhere.” He whispered, hands finding his pockets as he fidgeted, thinking hard. “I just want to be with you, be around you. Fuck, I don’t know. Just… come, sit with me, have a drink, talk- anything.”

Hearing Drew say he only wanted to be with her made her heart flutter. She tried not to think about it too much seeing as she assumed it was just one of his little games like usual. “Okay” staying with a roll of her eyes. Looking around the party she could tell people were starting to leave, she figured as it was getting into the early hours of the next day. “Where do you want to go?” Sloane asked looking up at him. Thinking for a moment she stuck her hand out for him to grasp, “come on” was all she said starting to walk.
