Dr. Dorothy Lavinia Brown was born on January 7, 1919 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Brown was the first African-American woman to become a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. As a woman, she had to overcome widespread opposition within her field to complete her residency. She served as chief of surgery at Riverside Hospital in Nashville, and served a term on the Tennessee State Legislature.
