when thinking about if a mole on your skin might be cancerous, you want to remember ABCDE!

A - asymmetry. a mole not being the same all the way around can be a sign of cancer.

B - border. if the border around the mole is fuzzy, has a notch, or is otherwise not clear, take note!

C - color. moles that are multiple colors can be worth getting looked at.

D - diameter. moles larger than 6mm wide are more likely to be trouble.

E - evolution. keep an eye on it! is it changing? is it starting to ooze or bleed without being scratched?

I want to draw your attention to D, which is diameter. 6mm is approximately the size of a wooden pencil's eraser, like the one pictured above!

one easy thing you can do for your health is keep the ABCDEs in mind and compare suspicious moles to a pencil eraser. if the mole is bigger than the eraser, or if other ABCDEs seem relevant, it is worth getting checked out by a skin doctor, which is called a dermatologist!

not all cancerous moles will be bigger than 6mm, and there can be more signs of skin cancer than just the ABCDEs. so for any concerns, make sure you see a dermatologist!
