an open letter tag
Tumblr media
my 13 year old self. a tag by @sluttythreads !
hey you. the girl who grew up being teased and prodded. i know you let it get to you, that it hurts and feels bad when it seems like the whole world is against you. i know that your friends don’t always treat you well, and you have troubles coping with that. i know you wish things were easier. but i wish you knew what i know now.
i know you think you’re ugly, and that you’ll always be ugly. i know you think your best friend is way out of your league, and you’ll never have as many boyfriends as her. you know she has more friends than you do and you think that means she’s worth more. i know that you feel alone. but i wish you could see things the way i do.
i know you feel worthless. i know you think that your worth is measured by how much stuff you have, what clothes you wear, how pretty you are, and how many friends you have. but i wish you could see that the opposite is true.
i wish you knew that the people who bullied you were intimidated by you. i wish you could hear them say it all those years later.
i wish you would stop calling yourself ugly. you are only a rosebud who has yet to blossom. you are beautiful, you just can’t see it yet.
i wish you knew that your best friend was struggling too. i wish you knew that all her friends were terrible and you were all she had. i wish you knew that she thought you were prettier. i wish you knew that she was just as insecure as you were.
i wish you knew that life has so much more in store for you. i wish you knew better than to hurt yourself.
i wish you knew how much your parents love you. i wish you knew how much your sister cares about you.
i wish you knew how much you were worth and never had to discover it.
now that you’ve read my letter, here’s how the tag works! you DO NOT need to be tagged by someone to use this idea, but when you make your post, tag me!
tag rules:
if you get tagged by someone, write a letter to your younger self.
post it and tag me so i can read it!
include who tagged you and tag 5 of your friends to write their letters.
make sure you include the rules of the tag (you can screenshot this slide or copy from tumblr)
use the hashtag #mayaslettertag
if you get tagged or want to do this challenge, you DON’T have to write to your 13 year old self. i’m 17 now, so i chose an age when i was struggling a lot when i was younger. so, choose an age you have a lot to say for!
i (@sluttythreads) started this challenge, and i’m tagging:
@slfcaretopia
@eyeluhv
@slfcarecitrus
@neptunethreads &
@fenticafe

“and then i looked up”
Tumblr media
a true story.
r/truescarystories
u/revanent10-15
I'm a police officer in the southern U.S., in a suburban department of about 100 sworn officers. I work in a college town. I've been on about 10 years now, made Sergeant 4 years ago, but at the time of this story, I was just two years on, working night shift patrol.
I've been lucky that not a lot has affected me, mentally anyway, during my career. I don't have kids. That's how it gets to you usually. You can build all the mental walls you want, but when you have an emotional connection with your kids, and see something happening to kids, the walls mean nothing. Anyway, this one stuck with me. Still makes my hair stand on end. Especially when it rains.
It was September. Just after midnight. I get put on a call of shots fired. Now, normally these calls turn out to be either fireworks, or perhaps a car backfiring...but mostly fireworks. So unless we get multiple calls on it, or a confirmed gunman or someone confirmed wounded, we just send one unit. That night it was me.
The "shots fired" was reported around a college football stadium. This was during football season, so there were a bunch of really big white tents set up all around the parking lots for tailgaters.
I notified dispatch that I was on scene, and started rolling through the parking lots, casting my spotlight here and there. It was raining, pretty heavily, and hard to see.
About halfway through the lots, my spotlight illuminated the silhouette of a man sitting in a folding chair, under one of those big tents. I pulled closer and lit him up, and notified dispatch that I was out with one in the parking lot.
His back was to me. He appeared to be hunched forward, as if his elbows were on his knees and his head leaning forward.
I walked towards him and started calling out to him. Can't remember exactly what I said but something like, "Hey man, you OK? You heard anything strange? Can you come talk to me?" He didn't move or answer.
As I drew closer I lit him up with my flashlight. I then noticed the outline of a shotgun on the pavement next to him. Combined with him not answering and the nature of the call, it was enough for me to break leather and have dispatch hold the channel.
I kept calling to him as I approached. Asking him to show me his hands, etc. 30 feet, 20 feet, 10 feet. My handgun (Glock model 22) has a Streamlight TLR-1 light on it, so I had him lit up.
6 feet, under the tent with him. 5 feet, 4 feet.
I close on him, come around to the front of him.
Shotgun suicides are difficult. Often if they put the barrel under their chin the blast from the barrel will blow the gun out from under their chin before the shot ever hits them. There was a guy in my hometown that succeeded in a shotgun suicide, only because he did it in front of a pond. Put the barrel under his chin, pulled the trigger. Only managed to blow his face off. Coroner said he probably ran around screaming through the hole that used to be his mouth before he drowned in the pond.
This guy succeeded. Blew his head clean off. You do this job long enough you notice funny little details. His elbows were indeed resting on his knees. It was as though he blew his head off, set the shotgun on the ground next to him, and then leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees to think about what he'd done.
About that time, I noticed that, even though I was under the tent with him, it felt like it was still raining. And then, I looked up...

bad habits
Tumblr media
𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬:
• nail biting
• smoking
• mindless eating
• lying
• procrastinating
𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 ?
you would think there’d be some complex answer, something scientific and difficult to understand behind our bad habits. 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭. there’s really only two things that are causing you to do that thing that’s super bad for you:
𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 & 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦.
𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭:
1) know that you can’t just “cut” a habit without replacing it with a new one. the key to overcoming a bad habit is replacing it with an action that proactively better for you or something directly the opposite of the habit you’re trying to break. for example: if you keep biting your nails, paint them regularly instead.
2) change your environment. try to avoid things that are going to trigger your bad habit. if you’re always eating chips, get rid of all the chips in your kitchen. if you always watch tv right when you get home instead of doing homework, hide the tv remote out of sight. it’s infinitely easier to break a habit if you change your environment.
3) visualize your success. imagine your life without the bad habit, or with the good habits you’re forming instead. think of how it’ll make your life easier. finding something like this to focus on will drive you to get rid of the bad habit.
4) surround yourself with people who live the way you want to live. if you’re trying to workout more, find someone to befriend who’s already active and ask to be gym buddies! having a friend or a partner to work with will help you feel less alone in reaching your goal. this doesn’t mean you have to cut off the friends who encourage or partake in your bad habits, but it can be really helpful to make new friends who push you to be better.
5) stop the self-negativity. if you catch yourself talking bad about yourself or thinking negative thoughts, add a “but”. "𝐢'𝐦 𝐬𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝐢 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐰." turn it around and look for the positive. find motivation in it.
6) expect to fail. it’s impossible to flawlessly break a bad habit. you’re going to mess up! you’re also gonna forget sometimes, or even purposely sabotage yourself. 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐨𝐤𝐚𝐲. it was going to happen eventually, just try to move past it and keep getting better.

some t-swift motivation
Tumblr media
taylor swift is one of my long-time favorite artists for a lot of reasons (but we can save that for another day.) recently, taylor has been in the media a lot due to her new album lover, but also because of the record deal calamity with scooter braun, scott borchetta, and bullies justin and hailey bieber.
the way she’s handled this situation is so strong and empowering to the women on the outside who wonder how something like this could happen. because taylor’s strength and way with words is just fascinating, i thought today i’d share some of my favorite tswift motivational quotes. let’s dive in.
“if a guy shares his experience in writing, he’s brave. if a womam shares her experience in writing, she’s oversharing, she’s overemotional. she might be crazy or “watch put, she’ll write a song about you”, but that joke is so old and it’s coming from a place of such sexism.”
“as the first woman to win album of the year at the grammys twice, i wanna say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will tey to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. but if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know that it was you who put you there. and that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”
“guarding your heart and protecting your dignity are a little bit more important than clarifying the emotions of someone who’s only texting back three words. i’ve learned that from trying to figure out people who don’t deserve to be figured out.”
“it’s so much easier to like people, and to let pwople in, to trust them until they prove that you should do otherwise. the alternative is being an iceberg.”
“i never read one hateful thing said about me by some twelve year old. so i got to live an actual life. and i’ve kept that mentality. just because there’s a hurricane going on around you doesn’t mean you have to open the window and look at it.”
