Not really a head cannon, but I always draw Joel emo. Like, he has a bunch of piercings and the streak in his hair his DARK green and we wear eyeliner and eyeshadow. I cannot draw him any other way.

I like to image Mezalea as an empire full of mob hybrids and mobs that the rest of the world looks down on/are scared of. Because of that Mezalea appears empty during the day as it’s only active at night! So the clones are the only thing in the streets during the day, making sure all the civilians are alright as they rest. The other empires don’t know because they only go during the day, that’s why they think he’s mad, to them he’s building for no reason, in a silent empire! (Sorry for how long this is)

Don’t be sorry! This is really sweet and I love how it kinda puts some of his characteristics into context!

Going into doublelife Joel was terrified to be forced with someone because Allies and even friends never did great for him there was always a betrayal, be it by him or the ally. and after Scar especially he just didn't want that anymore. When he met Etho and his reaction was "oh no" it made Joel sink into more of a hole of doubt that this thing wasn't gonna end any differently. Joel tried his hardest, he gave his most, he tried to keep Etho his ally because if he loses the one person who is forced to be with him then who can he keep? No one. he thought. But Etho stayed, he went home every night, they talked. And Joel could finally say he had a friend. And even as they stood burning in the portal they held hands, they died together. E1!Joel headcannons

Joel often has nightmares about the sea, unsure why but they always involve Lizzie falling, unable to swim to safety, her Ocean Queen powers failing

Lizzie shares a room with Joel whenever she visits him, but feels empty without being so close to the sea. So she often wakes up and Joel has to sit outside with her, watching the sea.

His hair often is filled with red dust from building in the mesa

(1 and 2 combine into this "my wife might be in danger, but taking her away hurts her but I'm selfish and worry too much about her" tragic story and erm 😭

I think that Joel is a cicada, or at the very least some sort of vaguely annoying but ultimately harmless bug

Joel gets defensive about his height because he's way shorter than his species usually is, being an Ogre (well, half ogre). And everyone knows this as well, he isn't actually that short he's average human height! But that doesn't stop the teasing
