Were you aware that, despite the informal food markets being critical for ensuring food and nutritional security, a large part of the public health burden of foodborne disease is attributed to foods handled and sold by the informal food sector partners?
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Initiative on One Health commissioned a report, ‘New directions for tackling food safety risks in the informal sector of developing countries,’ published on June 2023. It summarizes findings from food safety research in low- and middle-income countries (#LMICs) and proposes a path toward more effective and sustainable interventions to enhance food safety management in LMICs.
Various studies depicted widespread food contamination in informal food distribution channels. Since they remain essential sources of affordable, nutritious food for millions of individuals in LMICs, developing countries must devise strategies to overcome food safety issues. The principal causal elements were concluded as inadequate food safety awareness, poor hygiene practices, substandard food storage and preparation methods, and deficient infrastructure and environmental conditions. The key approaches recommended in the report are:
Local action with centralized guidance is crucial to promote safer food. Implementing regulatory and facilitative interventions needs to come from the municipal level and set up multistakeholder platforms at the local level.
Multisectoral collaboration rather than stand-alone food safety interventions can yield the most productive outcomes. Integrating food safety efforts with improved nutrition, water, and sanitation access, environmental management, and urban infrastructure can bring better-resourced results.
A balanced "sticks and carrot" system involving gradual and continuous enhancements in food safety practices and/or facilities is required to engage and enable the informal market operators to boost their incentives and capacities to carry out their businesses in ways that result in safer food.
The concept of ‘one size fits all’ should be omitted when addressing food safety concerns due to varying risk profiles and scope for targeted interventions among individual countries. Thus, a customized and pragmatic outlook that prioritizes regional variations,  sequencing interventions, and fostering coalitions for action is the way to go.
With the slogan ‘Making Food Safety Smarter,’ Smart Food Safe : Food Safety & Quality Management Software works toward the vision of revitalizing food safety systems around the globe with affordable digital solutions. Carrying out more of the same food safety practices has less chance of delivering safer food, as emphasized in the report, and hence our software modules help your food business stand out by employing innovative and revolutionary tech-driven systems to achieve optimized food safety with ease.

A recent FMI- The Food Industry Association survey on grocery shopper trends suggested that though food inflation is likely to relax in 2023, high food prices will likely linger throughout the year. This resulted in 76% of consumers being concerned about spending more on their preferred foods, straining their budget. Addressing consumer worries about #foodinflation must be a priority for food industries as it can lower their sales and revenue if consumers shift to cheaper alternatives, significantly impacting their reputation and bottom line.
Food inflation refers to the sustained rise in food prices over a period of time that leads to a decline in the power of the consumer and manufacturer to purchase relevant food commodities while all other factors influencing purchase decisions remain constant. Major contributory elements include:
COVID-19 & Conflicts: The COVID-19 pandemic, accompanied by global crises, increased difficulty for stakeholders of the food system to facilitate the seamless functioning of the food supply chain as they became unable to obtain essential supplies on time
Food Supply Chain Disruptions: Disruptions that occur at any stage, from production to consumption, can lead to food shortages, generating high demand and, consequently, inflating food prices
Adverse Climatic Conditions: Extreme weather events, as well as animal and plant diseases, can destroy agricultural lands or cause unprecedented crop failures limiting the availability of food in the markets, forcing elevated prices on consumers
High Labor & Distribution Costs: Shortage of labor can drive up the costs of the existing workforce in the food processing and logistics operations, both of which reflects in the food prices
Export Controls: In some countries, government policies implemented export restrictions to ensure food security in respective regions, which recedes the availability of those products globally, ushering in a volatile market with boosted competition and heightened food prices
Food Wastage: Wasted food is directly proportional to how the overall efficiency of the food system is affected as it is responsible for putting pressure on the food supply chain to produce more, rising production costs, and excessive utilization of resources, trickling down to food inflation
In an era where every problem has a technological solution, tech-powered food systems are the deflationary force needed to curb food inflation by mitigating supply chain bottlenecks, improving productivity, and resource optimization while reducing food wastage and meeting worldwide food demands without burdening consumers with sky-rocketing prices.
Smart Food Safe advocates developing a food sector competent in conquering global food inflation by providing the digital infrastructure for refined quality and food safety approaches, automated supply chain management, and enhanced transparency and traceability strategies through our 16+ interconnected farm-to-fork software solutions.

“Food safety is everyone’s business” echoes every World Food Safety Day by being the annual reminder that no matter who you are or what you do, you play an important role in making sure food is safe to eat.
The fifth World Food Safety Day celebrated on 7th June 2023, goes by the theme "Food Standards Save Lives," as announced by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO). This year's theme aims at reinforcing the significance of established food standards in ensuring the safety and quality of our food to protect the health and well-being of individuals worldwide. All stakeholders, from producers to consumers, are encouraged to actively adhere to global food standards to prevent foodborne illnesses, guarantee safe food, foster economic growth, and contribute to sustainable food systems. Let’s see how food standards really become a means to save lives and why each supply chain partner should stay compliant.
Science forms the foundation of food standards, as they are established based on the scientific expertise of professionals. They guide government and regulatory policymakers in determining the best practices for food production, processing, handling, and preparation to ensure food safety.
Compliance with food safety standards is powerful in fortifying the food supply chain integrity by retaining high-quality food, mitigating hazards, avoiding legal repercussions, maintaining brand reputation, and eliminating food safety incidents, thus saving lives. They act as the “bedrock of trust” by being the solid framework that enables consumers to trust the food they eat is safe on the belief that everyone involved in making the food followed the implemented food safety protocols, accessible in the form of food standards.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission has been instrumental in developing international food standards and fair trade practices, recognized as benchmarks for food safety by the World Trade Organization. Codex standards provide guidance to farmers (Good Agricultural Practices), food processors (Good Manufacturing Practices), distributors, and consumers on hygienic food handling, acceptable levels of additives and contaminants, safe packaging, transportation, and proper labeling. As Codex turns 60 in 2023, this World Food Safety Day commemorates food standards for defining the path to safe food for everyone everywhere.
Smart Food Safe : Food Safety & Quality Management Software embarks on a transformative journey in the realm of quality, food safety, traceability, and regulatory compliance with 18+ tech-enabled solutions for farm-to-fork applications.
