Flaws And All
Mondays are tough in this current season in my life with 2 little ones under the age of four. Honestly, there’s no telling whether I start the day on time or in a scramble. Either way, I accept it – flaws and all.
TOP // ASOS — SHORTS // Target — BAG // Cult Gaia (cheaper option from Amazon) — SHOES // Windsor — SUNNIES // Quay Australia x Desi Perkins
PHOTOGRAPHY // Ireál James
I know off the shoulder tops have been done to death for the last two years but I still like them. I might finally give them a rest in the fall (no promises) but for now, they’re still my thing. When I saw this one from ASOS with pink polka dots, I was instantly sold. Boyfriend shorts are a piece I’ve really liked for a while, but I could never find a pair that worked for me. Of course, I headed to Target for something else and found these. And here we are. With yet another unplanned purchase from Target. I’m doing my best.
And I’ll say this – whether they are on trend or not, aviator sunnies are so good to me. I’ve been a fan of the Quay Australia x Desi Perkins collaboration since it was released 2 years ago. So when I saw these High Key’s in black ombre, I couldn’t help myself. I have the same exact pair in silver. But if you find something that works for you, buy it in every color, right?
I’ve been waking up at 5a for the last month to maximize my productivity and get some me time. Basically, I’m maximizing my Fringe Hours which has been huge for my peace of mind. Of course, the 5a wake ups don’t always happen for a myriad of reasons – going to bed at midnight, the kids waking up in the middle of the night, poor planning, etc. But do you ever notice how hard we are with ourselves if we don’t do something perfectly? It’s pretty harsh. We also have the tendency to completely blow off a goal if we miss the mark once. EX: I woke up at 7:30a and so I’m no longer waking up at 5a moving forward. The point isn’t to give up, but to brush yourself off and try again.
That was the kind of morning I had – baby woke up at 4a, didn’t go back down until 6a and so I decided to go back to sleep and that resulted in me waking up at 7:30a. No bueno. But I’m here. And I’m worth giving a try again tomorrow – flaws and all.

12-Year-Old Reporter Hilde Lysiak Recorded an Arizona Cop Who Threatened to Detain Her
A 12-year-old community reporter says she was working on a story when she was stopped by law enforcement who threatened to throw her in juvenile detention. Hilde Kate Lysiak, publisher of the Orange Street News, says Marshal Joseph Patterson stopped her as she was biking through Patagonia, Arizona, and asked her for identification.
While she normally covers the town of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, Hilde wrote in a February 14 post that she was “currently reporting from Patagonia, Arizona,” where she’s been doing interviews with locals about the border wall.
“I don’t want to hear about any of that freedom-of-the-press stuff,” Patterson said, according to Hilde’s February 18 report. “I’m going to have you arrested and thrown in juvey.”
Video of a second encounter between Hilde and the marshal posted to YouTube on February 18 begins with her asking Patterson from her bike, “What exactly did I do that’s illegal?” After confirming that she can be put in juvenile detention, Patterson interrupted his explanation to address the fact that she was recording him.
“What I’m going to tell you is if you put my face on the Internet, it’s against the law,” Patterson said. “I”m not giving you permission to use my picture or my face on the Internet.”
Legal experts have pushed back on that claim. Dan Barr, a lawyer with the First Amendment Coalition of Arizona, told Nogales International that “It is perfectly legal to post such a photo online” and calling the officer’s claims “complete nonsense.”
“I hope this is not reflective of the Patagonia marshal threatening people with other nonexistent criminal violations,” Barr said.
"You can always record the police as long as it's a public space or your space," Arizona-based attorney Jonathan Frutkin told local NBC affiliate 12 News in 2017. "If somebody pulls you over, you're allowed to go ahead and film that interaction." There was previously a bill to limit rights to record police officers in Arizona, but it died before even getting a hearing, as reported by AZCentral.
In the video of the second encounter, Patterson went on to explain Hilde’s offense, saying she had followed him on her bike. When Hilde asked how that was illegal, the officer told her, “Don’t follow law enforcement.” He added, “I don’t want you to get hurt. I’m looking out for your safety.” And then went on to say that she was in an area where there have been reports of a mountain lion — something Hilde has covered on her site. The marshal then accused Hilde of disobeying his “lawful order” and lying to him.
“You can lie to your mother, you can lie to your father, you can lie to your priest, but you can’t lie to a law enforcement officer,” Patterson said before accusing Hilde of lying about visiting a friend in the area. Hilde began to push back on that allegation, but the marshal said, “you didn’t even make it to your friend’s house” because she was following law enforcement and then said he would contact her parents before driving off.
“The town of Patagonia has received many comments concerning Marshall Patterson’s interaction with a young reporter from the Orange Street News,” read a statement on the town of Patagonia’s website. “The matter has been carefully reviewed and we have taken action we believe to be appropriate for the situation. We do not publicly disclose personnel actions including discipline and will have no further comment on this matter.”
According to Nogales International, Patterson has allegedly argued that recording him carrying out his duties is illegal once before in 2013.

September 2018 BattlBox “Mission” Review
Each month’s box is themed as a Mission and includes a detailed list of products and their values in all the different level options. This month’s theme is EDC 3.0, and it contains a nice little collection of items that will come in handy in everyday situations. I just want to preface this review by saying literally every item in this month’s box is ultra-portable and would easily fit in your hand. In fact, every item conveniently can be stored in a pouch that is no bigger than a burrito!
Here are the items included in the Basic level ($24.99 cost / $59.33 retail value):
Speedy Strike Knife Sharpener + Ferro Striker – Retail Value $9.95
First up we have this micro carbide sharpener and ferro striker named the Speedy Strike. Made from Micro 100 Super Carbide, this handy little tool can be used to sharpen serrated or flat blades, fish hooks, garden tools – basically anything you might need to keep an edge on. It feels sturdy in the hand and has a smooth but grippy rubberized grip and removable cover.
Lighterbro Classic Black – Retail Value $13.99
Next up we’ve got this interesting item – The Lighterbro. You can turn your plain old Bic lighter into a multi-tool featuring a blade, scissors, screwdriver, and bottle opener. I like that it’s stainless steel, it has a pleasant weight in my hand and doesn’t feel bulky like I expected it to at first. I don’t normally carry a lighter so this is something I’m likely to gift.
Exotac Freekey System – Retail Value $6.49
Next up we have a couple of items from Exotac, a brand I’ve seen in several subscriptions including a past Battlbox. Everything they make seems to be clever and well-constructed, and the Freekey system is no exception. It’s basically an improvement over the classic keyring design. Instead of having to fight against a smooth, strong, rounded piece of metal with your fingernails, the Freekey system is flat and pulling apart the layers is a piece of cake. It is made of several loops, so it’s equally as secure as a classic keyring. If your key doesn’t fit on the larger main ring, there are several smaller rings included that have the same build. Everything was super easy to attach and remove.
Exotac BMQR .380 Magnetic Quick Release Keyring – Retail Value $16.95
The other Exotac item is this magnetic quick release keyring that mimics a .380 bullet. The magnets in the bullet and casing are super strong – I had to keep them a few inches apart just to photograph them. The bullet side comes with the smaller Freekey system ring and looks great attached to the main Freekey system from above.
Battltac Daily Utility Tool – Retail Value $11.95
The final item at the Basic level is this small utility knife tool from Battltac. This is essentially a retractable x-acto blade in a very tiny metal package. It fit easily in my fifth pocket even with a tube of lip balm. Daniel Dabbs, Battlbox CEO, designed this particular item in order to save your expensive EDC blades from everyday cutting tasks like opening boxes or working through annoying plastic packaging. Save those sick stainless blades for cutting rope and wood and meat, and use this little guy to open your next Battlbox or subscription box instead.
In addition to the items included in the Basic box, here are the items included at the Advanced level: ($49.99 cost / $124.27 retail value)
Olight S1 Baton Flashlight with 16340 Battery – Retail Value $44.95
The first item at the Advanced level is this ultra-compact, high-powered LED flashlight from Olight – the S1. As some readers may know, I have a weakness for flashlights, and I can thank the last EDC themed Battlbox for turning me on to Olight. The S1 is about the size of a AA battery or a standard lip balm tube, and despite its small size it has an output of 500 lumens! Standard headlamps output somewhere between 100 and 200, so this is a wildly bright little light. It comes with a pocket clip, which I removed, and a lanyard which I probably won’t use. My only gripe is that it’s not rechargeable, but you can purchase a separate rechargeable 16340 battery.
Exotac EDC Roll – Retail Value $19.99
The other item at the Advanced level is this EDC tool roll from Exotac! This roll is made from heavy-duty nylon and velcro and has one row of stretchy pockets for larger items and a flap with mesh pockets for holding smaller things in place. The stretchy side is perfect for a standard pocketknife, the Speedy Strike, or even a smaller medicine bottle, while the mesh pocket side is ideal for smaller items like keys, lip balm, or an S1 Baton flashlight. There is a large amount of velcro, allowing you to pack a ton of stuff into this roll and still easily secure it. The leather belt strap is a nice touch as well.
In addition to the items included in the Basic and Advanced boxes, here are the items included at the Pro level: ($99.99 cost / $194.26 retail value)
Real Steel G5 Metamorph – Retail Value $69.99
The only item in the Pro box this month is this gorgeous 14C28N stainless steel knife from Real Steel. This knife is so slick: it fits cleanly in the palm, it’s got a bit of a matte finish on the aluminum handles, and has bearings in the hinge making opening and closing a total breeze. To open the blade, there is a thumb push on the bottom, and the locking mechanism is completely hidden within the handle. I really love the sharp look and feel of this blade and it may take the place of my current EDC, the Brous from Battlbox April 2017.
In addition to the items included in the Basic, Advanced and Pro boxes, here are the items included at the ProPlus level: ($149.99 cost / $274.25 value)
CRKT Crossbones and CRKT VIVA Combo – Retail Value $79.99
Finally this month, we have this combo from CRKT featuring the VIVA EDC tool and the Crossbones folding blade. Starting with the VIVA, it’s a basic belt loop hook with a few tools included, but it’s got a nice weight to it compared to some other all-in-one pieces. There is a pry bar at one end, a bottle opener of course, and a mini-wrench built into the body of the tool. Moving on to the Crossbones, this is a really interesting folding blade with a unique body. The blade itself is reminiscent of the Metamorph, but is made from a different steel (AUS 8). The handles have a nice pattern to them which grips the hand well, and the locking mechanism is strong and tight. Honestly, I was a little bit surprised in how similar the two blades included this month are. The main difference is that the Metamorph blade tapers while the Crossbones sweeps upwards to a point.
And just so you can see, here is the Exotac EDC Roll with everything in this box packed in it. Lots of room to spare for items saved from past EDC boxes, or for your personal EDC needs!
Verdict: BattlBox put together another great EDC collection here, I have to say these are probably my favorite Battlboxes to get in the mail. I love how useful every single item is, and it was a great idea to include a tool roll with plenty of space for everything in this box with room to spare. This month’s value tops out at $274.25 which is a little low on the Battlbox spectrum but still well above the $159.24 investment ($149.99 a month plus $9.25 shipping).
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You won’t get this box as a subscriber if you sign up today, but you can buy past boxes in the BattlBox store.
Coupon – Use coupon code MYSUBTEN to save 10% off your first box!
Value Breakdown: At $159.24 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:
Sharpener: $5.78
Lighterbro: $8.12
Freekey: $3.77
.380 Keyring: $9.84
DUT: $6.94
Flashlight: $26.10
Roll: $11.61
Knife 1: $40.64
Knife 2 + tool combo: $46.45

Jas Sum Kral CBD Cigar
Traditionally planted in long, neat rows, the tobacco seeds that later became the harvest for this cigar are grown in the last remaining half acre of the Rainforest and scattered wherever sunlight can be found. After the harvest, the leaves are rolled by hand, fermented for six months, and then carried to the river, put into canoes, and rowed to the mainland before they are driven to port and shipped to Nicaragua. The result of this tedious process is an exceptional cigar with an open draw and hints of the environment where it originated. The minimalist smoke carries no label, opting instead for another piece of tobacco in its place.

Desert Style Meets Florida Farm Life in this Bohemian Styled Fête
By The Perfect Palette - January 7, 2019 - No Comments
Miami is known for its beaches and palms and so rarely does this area get a chance to showcase another side. Erica Melissa and team set out to change all that when they met up at Duni's Farm, (a new wedding venue to the area) with a goal to mix a bit of Florida farm life with a dash of west coast desert living.
And the result? Absolute boho perfection. Setting the tone with snakeskin leather invitations, large statement cactus' as aisle runners, and a warm palette of corals and peaches - this shoot has all the good stuff.
From this perfectly styled tabletop to this incredible outdoor setting, you can't tell us you're not swooning over every bit of this sunkissed look. Tabletop rentals from The Mix Dish worked effortlessly with florals from Blooming Romance. And these captures from Erica Melissa and Maria Cordova Photography are truly some of the prettiest.

Recent SCAD Grads and Fashion Designers Brandon Skipper, Linden Grace Colby, Haley Emerson, and Darren Apolonio Discuss The Current State of Fashion
The Savannah College of Art and Design takes its runway shows just as seriously as some of today’s biggest international designers. Not only do the student models work with J. Alexander on learning how to walk the runway, but for nearly 20 years SCAD has hosted fashion shows with its hard-working and talented student designers. And this year, the college had its first-ever runway show for its Atlanta campus.
Giving student designers an exciting platform to showcase their work (we attended the Atlanta one, which took place in a school parking garage decked out with a tire installation backdrop) this year’s runway shows were more diverse than ever, according to the school’s dean, Michael Fink. “The thought-provoking collections invited dialogue with the viewer regarding climate change, survival, continuing global race and social issues, sustainability and upcycling, and non-binary dressing as well as reimagining punk rock, glam rock, and a ‘let's just have a party’ joyful spirit,” he told Teen Vogue. Naturally, we were in awe of the creativity we saw come down in the runway, and we can’t wait to see where these new grads end up next.
Here we speak with four of SCAD’s students about their senior collections, their thoughts about the current state of fashion, and what they’re most looking forward to as they enter the real world.
Describe your collection in a few sentences.
My collection is bold, self-expressive, vibrate, resilient and "Avant Oppidan".
What was the inspiration behind your collection?
This collection is called “The Perception of Us" and the misrepresentation of black people in the fashion industry. This collection takes you through a timeline of African tribes, slavery, segregation, and police brutality. I used African tribal prints and the wording of "Danger" and "Caution" represent the stigma that black people have to deal with every day. There are subtle nods to experiences from every era that this race has endured, such as slavery, segregation, police brutality and human rights. With that said, at the end of the day we are all one, no matter what race, religion, sexuality we are. If we come together and listen to one another, we can create beauty all over the world.
Do you have any thoughts or feelings about the current state of fashion? What would you say is missing and what do you hope to achieve as a designer?

Pink Bell Sleeves & Black Eyelash Fringe
I wore a variation of today's outfit to a baby (girl) shower over the weekend. I swapped out the pencil skirt for a mini and the work tote for a bucket bag, while the rest of the pieces remained exactly the same. I love the versatility of work to weekend transformations (and vice versa) through subtle tweaks.

A horseback ceremony(!) at this misty horse ranch wedding with DIY for days
Photos by Northfern
Jatossha fell in love with horses and got a job working at a ranch. That's where she and Alan met and bonded over their love of horses. She adopted her GIANT horse, Bo Jack, while Alan rides his moderately sized horse, Sissy Bear. Together they share a three-year-old son and work on the Chanslor Ranch in Bodega Bay where they tied the knot surround by their family and friends.
This was a truly DIY/community-assisted wedding featuring horseshoes, gorgeous flowers, and delicious homemade food. Don't miss Jatossha's gorgeous braids, the horseback ceremony, and a the perfectly lovely foggy day…

With Passion, Marta Sanz: Meet Puig’s VP of Global Corporate Communications
As Vice President of Global Corporate Communications at Puig, Marta Sanz truly and simply enjoys capturing how people are across the world. After realizing that her initial desires of becoming a diplomat were too constricting, Marta chased after a career where she could creatively and with a high degree of independence grow, while simultaneously being amongst a wide variety of people. As a speaker of four languages and a blissful nomad, Marta found her niche by pushing the boundaries of global corporate communication within the beauty industry. Having lived in Italy, the UK, USA, Spain and France (where she is based now), Marta works tirelessly to redefine the way corporate and professional collaborations develop throughout the spheres of fashion and beauty.
Whether it is obtaining a journalism degree, receiving a chef certification, or holding fashion and fragrance communication roles at Paco Rabanne, Nina Ricci and Carolina Herrera, there is one thing that keeps Marta grounded in all that she does: passion. “Whatever I do, I do it with passion and a healthy amount of modesty, that is what works for me,” she says. BWB sat down with Marta to discuss this passion for her work and the things that help her maintain it.
AT WORK
What is the best piece of advice you ever got…
The one piece of advice that had the most impact on me throughout the years was to always have a good sense of humor and to lighten up, as a general life rule. It helps so much when having a perfectionist personality (laugh). I consistently apply it and it works! Lighten up, lighten up!
How to be an effective leader…
I like to use empathy as a great leadership tool. A mix of the right management skills, empathy, owning and embracing a work vision, and a touch of creativity while managing people’s emotions. Respect is key in addition to owning the appropriate business skills.
Respect is key in addition to owning the appropriate business skills.
How to stay creative…
I am all about ongoing learning, observing, absorbing, consistently getting out of the comfort zone and challenging myself. Anything that creates new obstacles sharpens creativity, sharpens growth and opens up opportunities, as well as keeping me humble and down-to-earth.
YOUR CITY (or cities!)
What you love most…
Running sightseeing. I have discovered so many places while practicing my favorite sport (Jardin des Plantes, Vincennes, Boulogne, Les Quais de Seine, Champs de Mars, Buttes-Chaumont, Monceau, Palais Royal, Louvre-Tuileries, Bassin de la Vilette…) I run in the early morning, I am a daylight person.
Go-to lunch place…
Wild and the Moon Opera has become a must for me. For non-vegan, I like Clover and Septime. I am all about product quality and simplicity so small places like Eels or Papillon are also on my list.
Favorite-afternoon-café…
Café Jacquemart-André and La Réserve.
A night on the town…
Believe me…I am a 100% daytime woman– no night life in Paris or anywhere else for me. I do nights for work only. A perfect day-off plan would be waking up early to go for a run, then going to a Bikram practice, and ending up with a good deep tissue massage! And if doing nights, it would be with friends at our own place, a light meal and hours of good conversations.
YOUR BEAUTY
Must-have skincare products (can be anything from body oil to what you do to stay energized)…
These days I am crazy about mixing my own oils, but there are some products that have stayed with me for years. Jonctum Cica from Sinclair Repairing Cream has changed my face and neck skin, and I apply it every morning together with Foto Ultra ISDIN Age Repair SPF50. I am addicted to Badger Creamy Cocoa Butter Lip Balm and never pass a day without applying Body Shea Butter from Beautébène. I give lots of importance to mouth care so I collect dozens of toothbrushes :-) I have been using Jason Tea Tree Oil paste and Eco-Dent toothpowder for years to keep my teeth healthy-looking. I like to think that the true way to have great skin and better health is good quality sleep, balanced eating habits, positive thoughts, and love from friends and family.
Favorite makeup products…
I am not a heavy makeup person but I cannot live without my Vitality Lip Flush from IT Cosmetics and Dr. PawPaw Tinted Ultimate Red Balm for my cheeks. I have also late discovered REVITALASH that finally gave me LONGUEEE lashes. Unique beauty store in Paris: VELAN Beauty, 87 passage Brady 75010 Paris.
Favorite Perfume…
Penhaligons Portraits « Lady Blanche » and Comme des Garçons « 2 »
What does it mean to you to be an empowered woman today?
Being empowered is definitely not being like men. There has always been empowered women throughout history that didn’t need to compare themselves with men. Empowered to me means being confident, open minded, with a vision and totally unabashed. A woman with positive ambition, and strong will. Ethical values, education and life experience is also relevant in the empowerment process.

OPI Metamorphosis Collection
OPI Metamorphosis Collection
Hey there and a happy Monday to you! Today I have the OPI Metamorphosis Collection for you!
The OPI Metamorphosis Collection is limited edition and features six new iridescent, shade shifting, glittery top coats. You can use them alone if you want or layer them over any other regular nail shade. If you apply a shiny top coat over them you get a super sparkly iridescent finish. If you add a matte top coat you get a matte foil iridescent finish.
All my swatches below are over my favorite black creme, which is Cirque Colors Memento Mori. They are just one coat of black polish and one coat of the OPI, with no shiny or matte top coat.
OPI Metamorphosis Collection
This Changes Everything!
This Changes Everything is a warm-toned gold shimmer.
Metamorphically Speaking
Metamorphically Speaking is a cool-toned light gold shimmer.
Butterfly Me to the Moon
Butterfly Me to the Moon is a pink and blue shimmer.
Can’t Be Camouflaged!
Can’t Be Camouflaged! is a yellow, blue and green shimmer.
Ecstatic Prismatic
Ecstatic Prismatic is a pink and green shimmer.
You Little Shade Shifter
You Little Shade Shifter is a blue and purple shimmer.
OPI Metamorphosis Collection
And there they are! They look great over black, but they also totally change depending on what other colors you layer them over. There are tons of color possibilities! I like that they not only have the iridescent glitter, but larger flecks of glitter too. You don’t have to fish anything out of the bottle, it all comes out easily with the brush and applies evenly on the nails.
You can find the limited edition OPI Metamorphosis Collection at Balanced Beauty Supply now. Find out more about it on the OPI site.
See anything interesting here for you?

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa Teases Upcoming Episodes of "Riverdale"
If you’re anything like us, you were left shook by the mid-season finale of Riverdale. And although we have to wait another month until the series picks back up again, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has been spilling all the tea on what we can expect next. Not only did he address those Chilling Adventures of Sabrina crossover rumors, but he also explained some upcoming episode themes that will leave stans mesmerized.
In an interview with The Wrap, Aguirre-Sacasa explained an upcoming episode that will take place in an alternate universe where absolutely everything we know is completely altered and changed. The episode is fittingly titled “Bizarrodale.”
“One episode we’re doing is an episode called ‘Bizarrodale,’ which, instead of Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead being the Core Four, it treats Kevin, Cheryl, Reggie and Josie as the Core Four,” he told The Wrap. “And it’s a really fun episode…I’m really excited about that one.”
NGL, we’re 100% here to see Cheryl and Kevin as the leaders of Riverdale High and focus of the episode. In the wise words of Kim Kardashian, “it’s what she deserves.” But that’s not all: Aguirre-Sacasa also explained another themed episode coming our way in the new year.
“And then we have an episode — the show has always been noir and always trending noir. But we’ve got an episode coming up that is completely noir: how it’s written, how it’s shot, the plot of it. And it’s really fun.”
And now the moment we’ve all been waiting for: that rumored Riverdale / The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina crossover. Well, although Aguirre-Sacasa didn’t confirm that it’s 100 percent happening, he definitely went ahead and continued to fuel those rumors.
“There’s one thing I’m trying to figure out that’s a nice Easter egg that I’m trying to get permission to do — but it’s too soon to talk about yet,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “We’re still in production on the second part of ‘Sabrina,’ we haven’t wrapped yet. I think right now our focus is all on wrapping up and getting that landed in a great way. I think once that’s behind us, I think we’ll be able to really investigate and have the conversations about this. That’s my hope at least.”
So while that crossover might not be happening in the second half of this season, we definitely know to keep our eyes out now. Riverdale picks back up new episodes on January 16 on The CW...so set your DVR accordingly.

Industrial Chic Brooklyn Winery Wedding
I met George when my best friend starting working with him. I found myself head over heels after the first time we met!
George blew me away with the proposal! He told me we were going out for a friend’s parents’ surprise anniversary party on a Sunday afternoon. He had the friend involved, who confirmed the date, time and location of his “parent’s surprise party”.
When we arrived, we were greeted and told everyone was hiding in the back, waiting on the couple to arrive. We made our way into the back and there was a group of people gathered for the surprise party – only they were gathered for OUR SURPRISE PARTY! George had also flown my parents, my sisters, aunt and cousin over from Ireland to be there. Everyone I knew and loved was in that room. I was absolutely SHELL SHOCKED.
After all the hugs, kisses and tears from my immediate family who I hadn’t seen in almost a year, George pulled me to the center of the room, got down on one knee and pulled out the ring box. I said yes! And, on the cue, a marching band entered the room playing our favorite song – “I Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” by Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons. That surprised everybody and went down a treat. It was a day and evening I will forever love and treasure.

This A-Frame Cabin Gets an A+ Makeover
This feature via Sunset, our partner for all things travel + outdoor living in the Western US.
Looking to spruce up your place or turn a classic cabin in the woods into a modern icon? These two fun-loving designers did just that and are here to show you how it’s done!
The Makeover
When Jason and Laura O’Dell first checked out a mouse-friendly, woebegone 1963 A-Frame at the edge of Big Bear Lake in Southern California, they swept their kids into their arms so that they wouldn’t be enticed to touch a thing. Following a major shakeup inside and out, their weekend retreat is worth risking wheel-wringing, bumper-to-bumper traffic to escape Los Angeles on Friday nights with their kids.
Back in Black
From the moment Jason sketched the A-Frame out on a napkin, the couple knew they wanted it paint the cedar exterior black. “It blends in with the bark on the pine trees that are on the property and keeps the house very hidden from the street,” says Laura.
Set a Scene
Bold, oversized floral wallpaper in the entry adds a feminine note to the cabin’s sharp angles while acting as a prelude from the exterior. “Since our house was painted black we chose this pattern because you can see it when you approach on the path to the glass entry,” says Laura.
Create a Place to Land
The original kitchen, says Laura, “had terrible lighting and low ceilings and felt dismal.” Jason anchored the revamped room with a sprawling kitchen island built from three slabs of Calacatta marble in a natural waterfall pattern. He contrasted the coolness of the marble with warm walnut cabinets.
Make Every Room Count
“Since it’s a weekend house, we didn’t need big bedrooms,” says Jason. To prevent the master bedroom from feeling cramped, the couple opted for a low-slung bed and vintage floating side tables. A macramé wall hanging by Emily Katz and pottery on a vintage dresser bring a boho spirit.
Give it an Artful Upgrade
Laura balanced the soaring white walls with furnishings and textiles to underscore the modern cabin vibe. “I’m a big fan of colors, print mixing, and texture,” says Laura. “We chose our sofa and rugs first, before letting the other elements such as throws, macramé, artwork, and accessories come into play.”
Know Your Audience
Jason sorted through more than 100 bunk bed options for the kids’ room before dreaming up his own built-in design. The double bunk beds, constructed of plywood, include a middle console ideal for toys or an iPad and also feature a smart pair of inset, square cup holders. A white powder coated steel rail and ladder ensure the kids can get away with a little monkey business.
Impress Guests
“Since we knew we wanted to host guests often, we knew we needed two bathrooms,” said Jason. After some deliberation he decided to give one bath “the best tub you could ever want” and to create a large shower in the other bath. Now the tub, set against a wall of black chevron tile, reintroduces the dark moments from around the house in a memorable way.
Say ‘Cheers!’ to Balance
A modern macramé wall hanging is a soft contrast to a hard-edge vintage wood and brass bar cart.
Keep It Light (Humored)
To keep the dining room table nook from feeling congested, Jason elected for chairs that make the space feel open, paired with a custom tripod walnut table from Studio Hus. Laura instantly fell for this impactful, smooching Morrissey image by photographer Michael Muller, who Jason assisted early in his photography career. “I’ve been a big Smiths and Morrissey fan since high school,” she says.
Cozy Up Corners
A freestanding mid-century fireplace is in keeping with the cabin’s roots and adds architectural dimension to the living room.
Create Open Passage
The couple nixed the original loft but extended the ground level, altering the A-frame’s profile to create space for a wing of bedrooms, a wing of bathrooms, and a large area to entertain. To maintain the open feel they opted for pocket doors with modern hardware and for art, simple textiles.
Make Your Guest Room the Best Room
“I didn’t want guests to feel like they couldn’t relax and that their kids couldn’t jump on the furniture,” says Laura. So in the guest room she created a warm, layered space with a vintage wall hanging and overstuffed pillows that she originally sourced for their shop, The Odells.
And Don’t Forget Playful
The benefit of those exposed beams? It makes the ideal spot for hanging an indoor swing.
