âI was going over a few quidditch plays.â He squinted back at her, already pink in the cheeks from the cold and the drink. âCome to spy?â
â Well, I could go if youâre too involved with that bottle of yours.â

Zacharias shoved over, making room for the newcomer. âIf by best spot you mean blind spot.â The table was conveniently out view of Madame Pinceâs desk. Â
â were you expecting the giant bloody squid? shove over, this is the best spot in the library. â

âDetails, Wealsey. Now what really happened at the end of last term? With Potter?âÂ
âOi! You. This spot is supposed to be reserved for prefects, didnât you know??â

"Donât doubt it. I mean, imagine weâre the parents, friendly parents, I mean -- not -- but with kids at Hogwarts, arenât we going to talk shit about what we think theyâre getting up to? Donât need to be part of any kind of club to call up a mate to spy on my kid.â He laughed at her naive smile, floating somewhere between concerned and joking. Zac knew from experience Susanâs mum was more likely to use rumor to punish her child than his was. âAnything bothering you?â
She had to resist the urge to roll her eyes. âMum likes sharing recipes though sheâs been on a recent health kick. They probably gossip too, especially about us kids. Think theyâre conspiring against us?â She had meant it jokingly but sometimes she did feel slightly paranoid with the constant need to look over her shoulder.

And he went careering after her, trousers down to his ankles before he realized anyone looking out from the castle had a good view of his bare ass, and hit the water with an impact sharper than heâd admit, his energy offsetting the September chill. Zacharias hadnât expected Hestia to join.Â
âHope youâve had some swimming lessons? Heard thereâs a bunch of ankle-biters in the shallow parts.â He said with all the confidence of a wizard whoâd forgot their wand back in their trouser pocket.Â
she tilted her head to the side. it would have been rather interesting to see her motherâs reaction to her brand new shirt completely ruined. â the ONLY way youâd see me on the sidelines is in your d r e a m s. â she took off running towards the water, pulling her shirt over her head and unbuttoning her pants.

It took a second before he realized that the topic of mums wasnât the easy conversation itâd been a few months prior, and a secret relief spread that he hadnât been talking to Hannah. âI keep saying, passive-aggressive insults is how she shows her affection, Suze. That book club is an excuse for a gripe session, isnât it? I know mumâs only in it for the wine.âÂ
âIâm still unsure if she likes me or not. She and Mum get along well enough.â She shrugged, trying not to linger on the former thought too much. âItâs quite a miracle actually considering how much she hates the monthly book club choices.â

âhuh,â he eyed the hem for longer than was polite. âSee, I figured weâd be swimming in nothing but skin, so thereâd be no danger to your finer things.â The air was brisk, it was midday, it wasnât the time or place for this. âWell, if youâd rather sit and watch the show, Iâm not about to argue. But Iâm going in.â
â good. â she slowed down alongside with him before picking up the pace again. just seeing the water in front of her made her restless. â realityâs a lot less exciting. â hestia winked at the other. â but this is made of silk and iâd much rather not get it WET. â she tugged on the hem of her shirt.

one, two, ten, a million
The Smith family isnât broke.Â
Zacâs mum married into the family at a time when the Smiths certainly were not broke, given that the will of everyoneâs favorite great great aunt, was after more than a decade, still in dispute. (Yes, heâs one of those Smiths)
His father runs a used wand shop, a vanity business that supports his delusion that heâs the next Ollivander. It barely breaks even, but his mum supports it because it keeps him out of the house.Â
Zacharias grew up believing his surnameâs heyday was just around the corner. When, at age thirteen, his long dead great-something auntâs will was settled and given to charity, his sense of eventual entitlement matured into the chip on his shoulder that still festers today.Â
But they werenât Weasley poor.
Everyone in his family agreed on that. The name Smith is respected. Purebloods help purebloods, and his mum accepted loans from several respected pureblood families on the credit of their name. And when they offered her last yearâs dress robes (as what good would they do sitting in the closet?) and the textbooks their Hogwarts graduates had dogeared, she graciously accepted. And really, if it wasnât a bother, if they donât mind watching Zacharias this weekend?Â
And this didnât bother him. Zacharias is an only child, his mum older than most, having given birth to him a fifty-three.Â
He likes attention. He feels entitled to your attention. Heâs a five-year-old boy who just figured out how to press the big red button that makes things go BOOM and when he finds yours heâs going to press it again and again and again because -HA- heâs got your attention now.Â
(shocker) Not many people can stand his presence for more than ten minutes.Â
He thinks he as more friends than he does. Not friends, actually. Acquaintances. He was a wide circles of people heâll greet in passing, maybe five that he knows more than ten things about.Â
Zacharias is Captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch team. Itâs highly likely he nagged Sprout into giving him this position. Heâs not a stellar player. He lacks precision and tends to misjudge his opponent, but heâs kept his position because heâs going that Quidditch mania that keeps him running drills when the rest of the teamâs still sleeping.Â
Harry Potter is a crackpot.Â
Zacâs housemates dragged him to Dumbledoreâs Army, but he joined of his own initiate. Something reeked, between Potterâs lousy explanations and Potterâs seeming superpowers. If it werenât that heâd won the respect of most Hufflepuffâs, Zac would have turned him into the due authority.
While he rarely shows it, Zacharias respects his fellow Hufflepuffs. Heâs more of a misfit in the common room than heâd like, but sees this as something beyond his control. Â
He has a huge problem with the word ânoâ where girls are involved. Fortunately, he has a short attention span.Â

He eyed her for a second, unwilling to admit to himself how gullible he was, now, at seventeen. âCanât say I do.â  Zac slowed his pace toward the lake, if only to give himself the mental space to catch up to Hestia. âMight pride myself on my powers of imagination, but I donât know in what reality Iâd prefer you in that shirt to off.âÂ
â i wonder where we fall on the list. â she rolled her eyes at him. â i was eleven and quite impressionable. can you blame a small girl for falling for a trick or two ? â her grin had shrunk into a sly smile. â now iâm thinking shirts would make it just as f u n. â

âI wonder if sheâll be around for the little Zachari in the future then.â
