“Bad guys don’t deserve to be redeemed” is a boring plot mindset and it’s cancelled forever.
Show me bad guys that think it’s too late to turn their life around, and then turn it around. Show me bad guys that think they’ll never be loved because of the things they’ve done and then give them love and support that makes them feel like it’s worth it to change. Show me bad guys who are bitter, hold grudges, lash out at people, and then make them realize that this Isn’t Working and want more out of their life. Show me bad guys that ask the good guys for help!!
The “villain gets what’s coming to him and is never seen or heard from again” trope is old and played. I want to hear from them again. I want them to ask the good guys to drive them to their first therapy appointment. I want them to struggle through apologies, not because they’re too proud to say “I’m sorry” bc tbh that trope can die too, but because they can’t find the words to make things better and it makes it feel pointless to try.
Make it hard! Make it hurt! Make them question who they are and if change is possible and make them find out that they can be more than the destructive thoughts and behavior they’ve adapted! Make them learn that having bad thoughts doesn’t make you a bad person, and you can choose which thoughts and desires you entertain and act upon. Let the choice to ignore bad thoughts and focus on positive ones become easier over time. And let them feel proud of themselves for it!
Real people struggle with these issues every day and right now the social message is that if you fuck up, you’re scum and you deserve to suffer and you’ll never be more than scum. Real people need to know that you can’t undo the damage of things you’ve done, but you can be better in the future. Real people need to know that you’re not pigeonholed into being a Bad Guy for the rest of your life because you’re a Bad Guy right now.
Nobody “deserves” to be redeemed, it isn’t about “deserving” redemption, it’s about working your ass off not to keep hurting people because you can.

So I was finally able to gather all of my thoughts on Akechi in order to create a real, sincere, in-depth view of his character. I’m pretty sure that the only time in the entire game that Akechi’s being unabashedly honest with us is right after his final boss fight.
“You’re so lucky. Lucky to be surrounded by teammates who acknowledge you. And once Shido confesses his crimes, you’ll all be heroes. As for me, people will find out my past deductions were just charade. My fame and trust will vanish. In the end… I couldn’t be special.”
He also seems to honestly consider Ann’s offer to let him join up with the Thieves. He thinks of himself as a burden that would only slow them down, but they reassure him that that’s not the case. If not for Shido’s cognitive version of Akechi showing up, I honestly think he would’ve pulled himself to his feet and come along. And when Cognitive Akechi pulls a gun on real Akechi, real Akechi doesn’t react – but he is visibly distressed when Cognitive Akechi threatens the rest of them.
Now, what’s interesting about this is that the appearance of Cognitive Akechi causes the real Akechi to slip back into lies again. Even though he’s so ready to stand up and become a part of the Phantom Thieves for real this time, that all changes real quick.
“Hurry up and go! The real fools are you guys. You should’ve just abandoned me here a long time ago. You would’ve all perished if you had tried to face these with me weighing you down.”
But that’s objectively untrue. Futaba refers to the other shadows as “weaklings,” which is a word she uses for enemies that are at least ten levels below you. And real Akechi had already put a bullet in Cognitive Akechi; there’s no way the cognitive version of him would’ve been able to put up much of a fight. I can’t conceive of a scenario in which real Akechi, as beaten down and weak as he was, could’ve gotten in the way so much that it would’ve cost everyone else their lives.
So, why does Akechi lie about it? It’s because we’re seeing the real Akechi, finally, and he’s being honest with himself without having the luxury of time to explain it to everyone else. The cognitive version of himself brings out the vibrancy of his true colors: at his core, Akechi is a Chaotic Neutral character. Even if he joins the Phantom Thieves, and even if they take down Shido together and everything they all hope for comes true, there’s no escaping fate for Akechi. He’ll still have to answer to Yaldabaoth, and even if he makes it out of that alive, he’ll still end up in jail for the rest of his life (which actually turns out to be untrue, we learn later, because the police can’t get any of the Metaverse shit to stick, but Akechi doesn’t know that). There’s no happy ending for him. Good and evil come second to his desire to be free.
That’s always been his true motivation: freedom. Freedom from society’s restrictions on him as a scandalous bastard child of a high profile politician, freedom from the responsibility put on him by Yaldabaoth, freedom from the constant threat and duress that Shido put on him, freedom from the restrictions of the fake persona (as in, the face he puts on for the public, not his actual, like, persona that he uses in battle) that he ended up creating for himself. Revenge against Shido was just a part of attaining that freedom, but when it was paired with all of the lies and resentment from his past and present, all of his other motivations became warped and unfocused in his head (which is where his really bad case of cognitive dissonance comes in after striking up a relationship with Joker).
Akechi seeks freedom because he wants to be more than what he is – more than what forces beyond his control demanded he be from the second Shido made the moral mistake of climaxing inside of a woman. In the end, he couldn’t be anything other than who or what he was, largely by mistakes of his own making – but he could, at the very least, die on his own terms. And he could do so while paving the path for something good to happen in the world for once in his life. And for him, that’s enough.

I had some flashbacks while watching this episode…
.
Also, I laughed a bit because of this:
If Durbe can read the text/knows the story->OMG you were a Barian after all!
If Rio glows green and suddenly starts telling the story because she is hearing voices->Oh, that’s totally normal.

=============
那少女穿着天蓝色的宽大上衣和一条热裤,短袜上溅满了淤泥,一双运动鞋破烂不堪,湿嗒嗒的浅黄色长发杂乱地粘在胸前,一副狼狈的模样。
=============
