do you ever stop to think about how the crows tried so hard to beat and/or torture the goodness out of zevran and they still failed? do you think about how he still became the kind of person who would help isabela murder her abusive husband? who’ll stick around to help a friendly warden save the world even when given the option to leave? does it make you feel insane how they could never break him the way they wanted to? that they tried to kill his goodness but his goodness never died???? can you even hear me!?????????

Okay but the fact that non of the potential wardens (except for Tabris) don't know shit about economics and money. Like. Cousland and Aeducan are both rich af, they probably never paid for themselves, their families just bought things for them. Both of them are "How much could a banana cost? Ten dollars?" meme. PLUS ther're a lot of things on the surface that Aeducan simply never saw before. Like an apple. And they see it and ask Alistair about it and he says "oh it's an apple?? you never ate one???" "no, there's no such things in Orzammar. is this some sort of delicacy??" "AN APPLE?!"
Amell and Surana both lived in the Circle since they were kids, everything of their personal stuff were given to them by the chantry and it was only the basic necessities. They had the same robes as everyone else, they had the same staffs as everyone else. And now you expect them to buy things? With real money?? They've never had a coin in their hands and now they have to buy food and tents and weapons and not only they don't know how much any of this things cost but they also have no idea how to tell if this clothes are poorly sewn or this food is badly cooked (i bet they didn't have fancy meals in the Circle you know). Help them.
And then there is Mahariel. Who barely even knows what money is. It's the first time they have to worry about equipment, the first time they can't just hunt for food. They are so used to the fact that the clan's craftsman would always make armor and weapons for them, that they can trust Ilen with this. And now they have to trust some human merchants? This armor is not even that good why must it cost so much? And Alistair says that this is a normal price? They should pay 5 golden coins and for what. Plus in a way their situation is also similar to the Aeducan situation, ther're a lot of things that Mahariel didn't even know about. Leliana tells them about fancy orlisian boots and they're like??? Ther're different types of boots? For what???
Brosca knows that shit is expensive. Ther're so very little people in Orzammar who would trade with a casteless and sometimes they would overcharge and it's a fact that there's a whole ass shadow market in the Dust town. And then Brosca goes to the surface and suddenly they no longer need to lie or pay extra money, people are willing to trade with them. But Brosca is never sure because what if they're trying to fool them? What if this thing is actually not so expensive? Or what if this food is spoiled because there's no way that the meat is this cheap??? Alistair's trying to tell them that this is not "too cheap" it's actually quite expensive but this is kinda normal for meat prices and Brosca says that they've paid twice as much for the piece of meat that was twice as small.

the one thing I always think of when I think back to dragon age is the dialogue you can have with zevran in dao that triggers when you decide to leave all mages to die a horrible death in the circle? the way that he completely starts questioning your authority, explaining to you that you are an atrocious person for doing this and thinking like this and especially that this is the one time trying to flirt with him backfires completely because he calls you a fucked-up manipulator for it? like i love that so much because he not once stands up for HIMSELF in dao, he's very passive to what happens to him, but in this moment he decides to throw away any dignity he has and BEGS for these people's lives - he doesn't know ANY of these people, but he is the only one who stands up for them out of all companions you can bring along (some do actually protest your choice a bit and you might lose some friendship points but NOTHING like the conversation with zevran)
anyway yeah he's my favorite character

Cruelty vs Compassion: Cullen and Niall in Broken Circle
Tumblr media
Cullen: Uldred tortured these mages, hoping to break their wills and turn them into abominations. We don’t know how many of them have turned.
Tumblr media
Irving: What? Don’t be ridiculous!
Tumblr media
Cullen: Of course he’ll say that! He might be a blood mage! Don’t you know what they did?
Tumblr media
Greagoir: I am the knight-commander here, not you.
I know much is made of the torture Cullen suffered in the Fereldan Circle. In Dragon Age 2 it is used to set him up as an extremist, and an ally of Meredith. In Dragon Age Inquisition it is used to excuse and moderate his actions in the previous game, and to justify his ongoing persecution of mage characters.
However, I think it’s worth looking at that scene in the original context, in Broken Circle. Here, it isn’t really about Cullen’s pain at all. Rather, it is about establishing him, as well as his fellow templars, as the bad guys of the quest.

Known Types of Magic
Magic is so vast that mages often put special emphasis or interest in a particular brand of magic. Sometimes this is because they have a natural affinity for it, or sometimes it’s just a matter of what their education is like.
Magic has its limits, but not many. Even still, those limits are pushed and broken—for example, World of Thedas vol. 1 stated that true teleportation is impossible, but in the Tevinter Nights story The Wigmaker Job, an elven mage does just that, transporting a room from one location to another. What we know of magic lore is constantly evolving, and when we talk about the fields of magic, or specialties if you prefer, there are only so many concrete facts and constraints.
In other words, it’s much easier to imagine whatever the hell you want. When looking at the principles of magic schools, I argue that the imagination should not be limited to in-game battle mechanics. For that reason, this post is not about just listing off all the specific abilities each school of magic can do, but rather, the concepts behind each school. The general principles. The ideas!

Unpopular opinion but Goldanna doesn't deserve as much hate as she gets.
As far as she's aware, her mother was raped by King Maric and then died in childbirth. And before she even gets to really process her grief, she's sent away with a single sovereign in hand and nothing else. She tries to come back to the castle when her money's run out and she needs work, and they chase her off because they can't have her spreading rumours about Maric's bastard. Especially not when they really do have Maric's bastard in the castle, and they've been telling him that his mother was a maid. (Seriously what are the odds that Eamon took advantage of that one maid that everyone knew had been pregnant and died, and figured that she would be a good cover story for Alistair?)
Anyways Goldanna gets to Denerim and sets up a life for herself. She spends her days washing linens and rearing her children, working hard to keep them fed, when who walks in the door? A bunch of strangers, one of whom claims to be her brother. The brother that (as far as she knows) robbed her of her mother.
Goldanna is a character wrapped up in bitterness and unresolved trauma for Good Reason. Does Alistair deserve her taking it out on him? Of course not. He'd just wanted to connect with whatever family he could find and be a part of that family, but Goldanna suffered greatly as a result of what happened to her mother and the consequences that her death had for her. It screams of being an old wound that never really healed, and she's bitter for how she was treated in the wake of it. Alistair was unfortunate in that he was the most tangible target that Goldanna's had for her frustrations since leaving Redcliffe, especially since we've since learned that he was never Goldanna's brother to begin with. But he doesn't know that, and neither does Goldanna.
So no, he didn't deserve to be spoken to that way, but what bothers me is that where that quest ends and we're left only with the take away that everyone out for themselves and that Goldanna was the only one in the wrong when the reality is that the fault lies with the person responsible for their situation: Arl Eamon.
In fact, Alistair's personal quest would have been a brilliant opportunity for him to reflect upon and challenge his views of Eamon as this faultless, honourable man who always goes the right thing, when just hearing anything about how Eamon 'raised' Alistair made it pretty clear that he was a terrible guardian.
Alistair always views the way he was treated as 'understandable' because he's Maric's bastard, Isolde was insecure over the rumours, Eamon was doing what was best for Alistair and Ferelden and blah blah blah. All excuses, and Alistair accepted all of them. But finding out that Eamon had a grieving young girl thrown out onto the streets right after losing her mother, it would make sense for him to pause and think 'why would the arl ever do that? He looked after me, why not look after my sister too?' and then actually challenge his belief that Eamon is unassailably good and honourable. Maybe the Warden could even encourage him to confront Eamon about what happened to Goldanna or leave it be, which results in Hardened Alistair vs Unhardened Alistair, and a confrontation could result in Eamon agreeing to send reparations to Goldanna (if only to placate Alistair), as opposed to forcing Alistair to give her money or nothing at all. Actually making the person who should have been held accountable for Goldanna's situation... well, accountable.
Tldr; Alistair's personal quest could have had him challenging his belief that Arl Eamon is a good, honourable man without faults and learning to stand up to him, rather than painting a poor, working class woman as a horrible monster because she's bitter and mean about *checks notes* the rape and death of her mother.
