How to write experience with zine, secret santa, writing projects etc. to your resume
All work is work. All work is valid to your resume. You have deadlines to follow, you have to manage your own time, you have specific requirements you need to respect and if you are in the mod team you have to organize, market, manage etc.
Here’s guide how to add hobby projects into your resume as a work experience, as that’s what it is. I will concentrate on zine experience as modern zines are pretty much professionally made and organized projects, whether the result is a printed or a PDF book.
General tips
- Always add international there, as all online projects WILL have people all around the world (unless it’s a very underground fandom project). Even if you had just one foreigner there, it’s an international project. Sounds fancy and resume’s purpose is to make mundane things sound really fancy.
- If it’s a fanfic zine, you can use a novel anthology.
- If possible, add the number of participants. It’s a really good polish to your reputation if you can say that you organized a project with 60 international participant than just say you organized a random event.
- For Secret Santa and other non-zine events, you can use these same examples. I have written to my resume Secret Santa event hosting as “Event organizer, an international online art project with 100 participants, 2022″.
- Your drawing and writing time is work, too. You can utilize these in your resume.
- You CAN and SHOULD act as each others’ referee in resume and work application from events and zines! Includes beta readers and their work!

How to Tell More About Your Fandom Project(s) To Normal People
If you are asked to tell more about the project you participated in, don’t worry. You don’t have to start to explain what a zine is, what shipping is, why these characters are kissing steamily, or why the fic you wrote was explicit hurt-comfort otp fic.
You can simply use general terms: Zine = a book or an anthology project. Secret Santa = an online art or writing project Fan video = a full video made for purpose X by editing or drawing fully.
“I participated as an artist/author to a zine of my OTP and drew/wrote this kind of art of them” = I participated in an international art book project/anthology book project. I applied and was selected from many applicants*. The book was put together in X month by multiple people and it was printed. I’m familiar with print requirements, time management, following dead lines and managing my own work.”
*If there was no application process but the event was open for all, you don’t have to speak about the application process at all. If asked, you can say that the event called for artists/authors and I decided to join in.
What you want to emphasis, no matter what you did, is that you can manage your own time, you can follow dead lines and you can follow given requirements. You wouldn’t believe how much there are people at paid jobs who can’t manage their time, hassle with dead lines and require lots of guidance. If you can honestly do something you are asked by a deadline given by the needed requirements - like write a 1500 word fic in 3 months - that IS an asset! You DID manage your time, manage yourself and respected the dead line. As remote work is increasing in many fields, employees who can do those three important things are gold nuggets to companies.
If you are in a mod position, you want to emphasis that you can lead and manage projects, communicate with everyone, keep up with dead lines and schedules, organize, and think also what risks might appear and how to prevent or handle them (like in zine; how many artists/authors might drop out and what do we do in that case?).
What every business and employer needs, no matter what the field, is good communication, proofreading, social media management and marketing, content creators, graphic designs, web designs, and marketing materials.
And those, my friends, are what every single zine project and fandom event contains.

Raon watching How to Train Your Dragon
“I’m going to kill you dragon.”
Hiccup said, the knife raised over his head, ready to pierce the dragon held in captivity.
Raon’s paws clenched tightly, a low growl escaped his mouth without him noticing.
He was angry. His paws clenched tightly they started to hurt. He was definitely angry.
Maybe that could explain why his paws were also trembling.
“I’m going to rip your heart out, and take it to my father.” Hiccup repeated, breathing heavily. “Because I am a Viking.”
The night fury looked at him, his eyes observing that human who was ready to kill him. A low groan that escaped his mouth. The groan that was a result of its pain caused by that same human sounded like giving up, as the dragon closed his eyes in surrender.
Raon’s heart was shaking. He didn’t want to see the next scene. He didn’t want to see the dragon that looks exactly like him be killed by a human.
Maybe this was why Cale didn’t let him watch it.
Was that it?
Raon’s heart hammered heavily, but he couldn’t bring himself to look away.
Hiccup breathed heavily, the knife still raised over his head. The night fury was already immobile from his trap, so he was completely defenseless.
And yet the knife could not move.
Raon’s eye peeked open.
Hiccup brought the knife down, his face scrunched in exasperation, and,
Regret?
Raon wondered.
That small anger, the flame from his anger towards Hiccup for attacking that dragon was still there. And yet….
“I did this.”
Hiccup admitted, his hands fell to his side. It was soft, yet clear for anyone to hear. Hiccup turned on his heel, and decided to leave the dragon.
Raon’s paw clenched and unclenched. He paid heavy attention to Hiccup’s movements.
Hiccup only moved a few steps before he stopped. He turned and looked back at the dragon caged in his own traps.
The dragon’s eyes were closed, as if it was waiting for its death.
Shwink.
A rope snapped.
Then another.
The dragon’s eyes snapped open.
Hiccup was cutting the ropes in a hurry.
He kept looking back as if someone was going to jump at them at any moment, but his hands hurriedly cut off the ropes one by one.
Raon’s head raised slowly.
When the knife cut off two more ropes, the Night Fury lunged for the human who attacked him in the first place. Green eyes glared at Hiccup who was ventilating under him, as if the dragon was ready to tear this human apart.
The night fury opened his mouth, baring its teeth wide open.
Raon let out a gasp.
The dragon pulled back a snarl and let out a fierce roar towards the human.
Hiccup was completely blown over by it, but the night fury let him go and leapt off from the surface, flying off into the distance.
Raon saw Hiccup faint after that and thought he was much more similar to his human than he thought.

Hello There Writer,
Look at you... doing such a beautiful service for the world, yet convincing yourself it doesn't matter. You assume people aren't reading because you're not getting the notes the big blogs are... you think that no one likes it because you don't have people doting over it in the comments...
But I'm here to tell you that isn't the case. It can be easy to forget when you're the one posting how daunting commenting can be for some people. Any sort of interaction, really. Just thinking about commenting on something you find beautiful, it can be scary for people.
Either they can be scared they'll annoy you or they can be scared they won't be able to do their adoration for your piece justice... or they can be scared they "like it for the wrong reason" and you'll be upset they didn't pick up on something you were putting down.
Sometimes people don't comment to spare any of the above things, and more. You not getting notes, likes, kudos, comments, praise, it doesn't mean that people didn't absolutely love your story. It doesn't mean that they aren't reading it. Remember to be kind to your readers and, most of all, be kind to yourself, because if your writing matters to you, it matters. Period. And if you are passionate about what you write and not consistently putting it down, I guarantee you people are getting swept away in your love and emotions for that writing.
Don't fret so much. I know it's scary, discouraging and can make you want to give up. But don't let it make you give up. Sometimes that comment is hiding right around the corner. Keep sharing, keep giving people your gift of beautiful words... you matter.
You matter. Thank you for patiently continuing to post and publicly share your beautiful words. Don't let this break you, don't let it make you stop.
With So Much Love,
Your Local Writer Hype Woman
🤍 H

So I'm writing an ORV fanfic and trying to get into the fight scene, so I did a bit of research:
Tumblr media
Meanwhile in ORV we have
*Man covered in injuries and lost one arm still standing strong and fighting*
*Burnt to a crisp but still alive*
*Bones breaking but still swinging a sword*
*Stabbed in the heart, still have time to give some wisdom*
Yeah not helping.

Dudes, just write. Stop asking me if you should start/continue/finish what you’re writing despite having x, y, or z problem. If you want to write I am in NO WAY authorized to tell you when to stop/start. That’s up to you and always will be.
If you think “no one will ever genuinely like this” you are 100% wrong. 100%. Think about all the trash out there that has fans. I wrote stuff when I was twelve that had more genuine fans among my family/classmates than ANYTHING I never shared with another living soul. It’s impossible to write something no one will like.
If you think “I’ll never finish it so why even bother?” you’re only depriving yourself, man. That’s like saying, “I like this cookie, but I can’t eat the whole bag. Guess I won’t even try one.” ????? Just write the story, to hell with endings. Some of the best works in the world went unfinished by the author/composer/architect, yet we admire the heck out of them. Maybe, instead of thinking you’ll never finish something, tell yourself this is the one you will finish (and repeat it until you do).
If you feel “this hurts to write, I’m too close to the subject material” either set it aside or full speed ahead. You MUST know how many classics, prize winners, and life changers came from someone’s very real pain and experience. Addicts, traumatized persons, victims, quite often they find solace and healing in writing about their experiences. Most importantly, so do their readers.
If you want to write, write. Otherwise only you are standing in the way of what you want.

why you should keep writing your story
because it’s a puzzle no one else will ever arrange the same way as you.
because there are ideas that simply won’t come to you until you write down the wrong words.
because all the bad scenes are the bones of the wonderful scenes.
because someone will love it: someone will read it once, and twice, and thrice; someone will ramble to you about the complexity of it; someone will doodle your characters out of love; someone will find it in exactly what they were looking for with or without knowing it.
because they have things to say, your characters. they’ve told you all those secrets and they have more to tell you, if you will listen.
because you love it even when you don’t; even when it drives you mad or when it accidentally turns into apathy; even when you think you’re doing it all wrong; you love it, and it loves you back.
because you can get a treasure even from things that go wrong; because if a story crumbles down you can build a shinier one on the same spot; because you won’t know where it will take you until it takes you there.

You know what? Create that new WIP, and don’t feel bad about it. Add to your tally, even if you already have a bunch of stories that has still to be written.
If you’ve got more worlds to explore, more characters to meet and lessons to teach, then there’s nothing stopping you. Go ahead. Write that story.
It doesn’t mean that you’re neglecting any previous WIP. Just means that you want to write something else. And that’s okay. You don’t have to feel bad about being creative?
It’s okay to work on multiple WIPs. So go wild, have some fun. You are a creative soul. Don’t hinder yourself.
