After hours and hours of work I have finished my first digital painting! I’ve learned quite a lot about Procreate and there’s several things I can carry over to my composite rendering skills. This is a labor of love. I really wanted to depict Severus as he was prior to turning to the light and the Order. This is Sev around the age of 20, prior to his “Big Mistake”. Now I share it with all of you! 💕

Severus Snape devoted his entire adult life to protect Harry Potter, son of the man who made Snape's life a living hell. He did this after Dumbledore failed to protect the Potters. No amount of loyalty to Dumbledore could bring Lily back. No amount of trying to save lives and thwart the Dark Lord could bring his best friend back. Snape is not such a fool to think it could. Perhaps his redemption started with Lily, but it continued of his own volition.

Thinking about Harry screaming out the classic “YOURE NOT MY DAD!” to Snape during an argument.

It would be so interesting to see the dynamics at play, especially compared to if he was adopted or not before that moment.

Pre-adopted Harry? Snapes fucked, everything’s fucked. Cuz what is he supposed to say to that? Like you’re right, I’m not your dad, I’m not your godfather, your mother hated me after 5th year and by all accounts I should not be your guardian, yet here I am and will continue to do so, because of a promise I made that I can’t tell you about and because maybe, just maybe I’m starting to love you as a son.

But then, he’d have to realize that in a way, he’s filling in for James, his bully. Harry inadvertently admitted to viewing his actions as being fatherly. How do you cope with that?

Absolute mindfuck of a situation.

Adopted Harry saying that to Severus? Comical, perfect combo of hurt/comfort. Have Snape throw it back into Harry’s face like, no no, you chose this brat, you’re stuck with me (lovingly) doesn’t matter how much screaming and fighting we do, you will always be my child.

I may not be James, I may not be Lily, or Sirius, or Remus, but I am here, and you chose me, and I chose you. You can call me your father or not, that is your choice, I know i will never replace James, but you cannot take back the love you have for me for the sake of an argument.

Add in the angst of Severus fearing becoming like his own father, as I imagine at one point he disowned himself from Tobias.

AND Harry’s point of view of all of this? The guilt he would feel over his apparent “betrayal” to James, the anger of letting himself rely on another person who he knows will disappoint him, the shame of realizing afterwards that he didn’t mean it and DOES actually see Sev as a dad?

I want Harry to start being depicted more as a runner. An eloper. I know his fight or flight is mostly fight, but, may I bring up 3rd year once more?

Let him finally get comfortable staying with Severus, notice how comfortable he is, and immediately panic because of how abnormal that feeling is. Let his body move without his control and take the bags he never fully unpacked with him as he runs.

Let him not realize what he’s done fully until he collapses on a random street miles away, legs practically jelly from the strain and adrenaline.

Have Snape only realize hours later after coming out of his brewing binge, panicked but confused because things have been perfectly fine? Better than fine actually. No new near death experiences or calls from Voldemort/Dumbledore.

Have Severus find him an hour later, still slightly trembling from anxiety that just won’t leave his body. He just wants to run as far as he can, he’s waiting for the shoe to drop. It’s already been proven that no matter how much he argues with Snape, he will never snap like the Dursleys, but his brain just can’t accept that and in some ways needs the disorder in his life. He can’t accept safety.

It’s a chase every time Severus finds him again, he tries to talk sense into Harry but it just doesn’t seem to work. Every attempt to calm him down and make him realize he will never purposefully hurt him is rebutted by Harry.

Eventually, Harry runs out of steam, a lack of eating/drinking, too much accidental magic, and his adrenaline fizzling out. Severus grabs him, a move he would usually never make, leading to Harry struggling in his arms.

Severus does not understand where this has come from, neither does Harry on a conscious level, all he knows is that he feels in danger.

He shushes him all the same, apparating them to spinners end, using up the last of his magic to land them on his couch. Harry’s tense in his hold, still unnaccepting of the care Severus is providing, but too exhausted to fight. He’s tired. He wants to feel safe.

Sleep takes him under their wing, Severus watches just in case he tries to run again.
