Here are seven themes to the shopper of today.
Empowered
They have access to everything. Over 75% of customers buy products after they have read reviews online.
Shameless
They know they rule the roost. 33% of shoppers compare prices on their mobiles when they are in the shops.
Savvy
They expect more. They want it better, faster, free. But don't forget 65% of UK consumers are willing to pay extra for premium service.
Cheap
They've been through a global financial crisis. They don't want to be ripped off.
You need a good reason to be more expensive than Amazon.
Impatient
They want it delivered yesterday. The top driver for customer spending in the UK is fast and reliable delivery.
Vocal
Keep them happy. Or they'll tell their 1,400 friends. Every minute of every day 100,000 tweets are sent and 680,000 pieces of content are shared on Facebook.
Disloyal
Provide it how they want it Or they'll go to the competition. 56% of people spread their shopping between 5 online-only retailers.
