laya one shot
She was beautiful.
My God was she beautiful.
It wasn’t for her looks. For that beautiful long blonde hair or those set pair of blue eyes, no. It wasn’t the back that she looks like some sort of angel every time he looked at her. For the way she laughed or bit her lip after she teased him with one of her silly little nicknames such as Sundance or Ranger Rick. That was only the bonus. The main thing was how her eyes shone in the city streetlight of New York, walking around in the late night hours to enjoy the thrill of it. The way she took every single thing no one would think twice about and put it into a greater detail. How strong she was though at home, she experienced a much more disappointing life. She worked with what she got and made it her own, made it more adaptable. These were just a few of the little things that he loved about Maya Hart — that was only just the start.
Tonight, Maya sat there at their usual meeting spot at the park, sitting down in the grass. Her legs were crossed and unlike the usual, where she seemed a bit tense and on guard, though she kept a reserved stance, she almost seemed content for the first time. Happy with her surroundings. The wind pulled upon her blonde curls as she stared into almost nothing, as if she was in her own world and for once, Lucas could almost read her better than she usually let on.
Walking up to her, Maya snapped out of it, looking up at Lucas, a small smile lifting on her lips. “Howdy there Heehaw.” She said in her usual mocking tone that Lucas began to grow to.
Lucas tipped his imaginary hat, a small smirk playing his lips. “Howdy there, ma’am” he countered politely and joined beside her. Maya shook her head, as if in an almost disbelieving way, a small smile playing her lips. “What?” Lucas asked.
Maya looked at him. “How do you do it?” She asked and when she noticed his confused look, she continued on. “I can insult you a hell of a lot and you still can be polite at the end. How?”
Lucas was surprised. It was just a bit of an instinct from the cowboy bloodline, one might think. He was raised better than to insult someone who insulted him. But the reasoning was different with Maya; though he had every reason to make an insult back with the knowledge of her being a Clutterbucket with the bloodline of everyone who did nothing but give up, he had a backup. But the fact was he didn’t want to. Her reactions to the coolness of his reaction, the scowls that played her face, that’s what made him love her more. That was just another thing to add onto the list of reasons he’d loved this Hart girl. There was so many.
"Because," Lucas said slowly, looking over at her "I know you don’t mean it."
Maya scoffed. “Then you don’t know me as well as you think,” the girl answered, reaching up to play with a strand of her hair, loosing her amused features, her lips disfiguring into a slight frown.
"I know you enough to know you like me, just a little." It was a bit risky, especially with Maya’s temper. He also didn’t want to risk her knowing. If she knew that he preferred her over Riley, she’d be quick to judge him, quick to avoid him because there was no way that she’d date her best friend’s crush. No way at all.
But it wasn’t that way, not at all. To his surprise, Maya glared at him, but not in an intimidating matter, more of a playful glare. Her cheeks began to warm up. She took a long time to speak, shaking her head. “You really don’t know me, Sundance, your rich bloodline of cowboys is just too corny for me”
Why was he so hurt by this? Lucas said nothing and when there was a long amount of silence with Lucas not answering, picking at the grass, the Hart girl spoke up. “Hey, wanna go for a walk? Forget studying tonight. Mr. Matthews can wait.”
He knew Mr. Matthews was very intent on Maya getting her grades up, but he also wondered what it’d be like to walk beside her, so close to her. Seeing her in the school halls, it wasn’t enough. When he got there to the park first and he saw her walk up to him greeting him with a sarcastic remark, he loved to watch her, but that wasn’t enough. Her needed more. He needed to be close.
Lucas nodded and Maya smiled, standing up. As Lucas went to get up, Maya held out her hand, opening and closing them in an indicating manner for him to take them. He did so, pulling himself up more than her making much more of the help but he didn’t mind.
Lucas was going to pull away, but to his surprise, she kept a firm grip. The one that indicated “don’t let go” and he didn’t. As long as her hand stayed in his, he wouldn’t.
The two walked and it was silent for first ten minutes. Lucas didn’t want to break the silence because he was much rather enjoying holding Maya’s hands as he watched cars whiz by occasionally or looked up at the street lights towards the cloudless dark blue sky. He wanted to tell her. Though this hand holding thing could have been meaningless, it was a wake up call for him. It wasn’t just the fact that she was holding his hand, it was the way his body reacted. From the beat of his heart, to the shakiness of his hand that he expected for her to notice, to the extra deep breaths. This was a decision that had to be decided soon but he was afraid because this could end good or badly and once it was done it was done.
"May-" he started but she interrupted, stopping them in the middle of the sidewalk, looking at him, almost intently. “Lucas, why are you shaking?” “Uh…” It wasn’t only the fact she called him by his name that made him speechless, but also the intensity of her stare, the heat of the moment. Without thinking, his eyes trailed down to their hands, their intertwined fingers. She seemed to notice because she suddenly seemed embarrassed, scowling — not at him — but herself.
The girl snatched her hand away from his roughly, as if it was a hot potato, hot from embarrassment, it was obvious. Lucas was speechless at tonight’s reactions from her. They were so unlike her and maybe she was right. Maybe he didn’t know her as well as he thought.
"I-I got to go." She said, shaking her head. She turned, beginning to walk away but now Lucas had a sudden surge of confidence he didn’t have before. Reaching over, he grabbed her hand, pulling her lightly back. She was surprised but she didn’t pull away.
"Wait why’d you pull away?" He murmured. "I liked it."
That seemed to catch her surprise. At first, her lips looked like they wanted to lift up into the hint of a small smile but then she frowned, once more taking her hand from his. “Stop. Don’t.” She mumbled. “Whatever charm you think you’re putting on me, it isn’t working.”
"What?" Lucas asked, obviously confused.
Maya lifted her eyes, this time meeting his own, her own serious, with the belief of the words of what she said. “You can’t just lead me on. Unlike Riley, I don’t give my hopes up. I believe not much will happen for me, including a guy like you liking a girl like me.”
Lucas was bewildered. “Who said anything about liking you?”
"I’m not completely stupid, Heehaw." Maya said, rolling her eyes. "I’ve noticed I just… I didn’t want to believe it."
Lucas was speechless. He had no words to put into a sentence, one that could sum up to this. He couldn’t just deny this; he did like this girl, Maya Hart, the girl with the blonde hair and spectacular blue eyes who often told him stories about the dad who left her, who, even though she was strong, once broke down in front of him in the middle of her stories. He came to conclusion he wouldn’t deny it. Why not admit me? “I do,” he murmured. “I like you.”
Though she seemed to have taken this calmly at first, she seemed to get upset now, also confused, as if his words were foreign even though she noticed herself. “Why?” She said in an almost-whisper like tone, her voice frustrated. “Why would you like me ? Out of everyone me?”
Lucas didn’t care about the frustration in her tone. It was too late to turn back, he knew this. “Because maya, you’re you.” He said without a moments hesitance. “You’re that sarcastic Clutterbucket that, even when all her ancestors were losers and gave up, she didn’t.” He was hoping that lightened the mood and she even looked like she wanted to smile, but shook her head to give off the tendency as if she was annoyed. “Don’t push it Bucky McBoing Boing.” She said, almost teasingly, and Lucas smiled. But still not Maya. She still frowned.
"But why me?" She pushed, making Lucas slightly frustrated. "There’s nothing special about me."
"You’re wrong there’s so much about you maya… So much." Lucas murmured and she looked at him, there was silence between the two before Lucas decided to ask her something himself. "Why did you mean a guy like me by the way?" He asked.
Maya didn’t answer, instead she flushed. She didn’t look at him for a moment, trying to gather something, perhaps her whits, because then she said, “I like you.”
Though Lucas should have noticed, he was also surprised, he wasn’t sure why. “That’s great then…” He began but she interrupted. “BUT we can’t be together. Riley’s my best friend. I wouldn’t do that to her.” She said. Lucas gave her a look and her eyes widened. “You understand that right?”
Though he did understand, he didn’t want any of it. He hid his feelings off way too long to be rejected by a girl who actually likes him for another girls school girl crush. “Maya-“
"Sometimes I just gotta throw away my own happiness for hers…" Maya interrupted once more, making him even more frustrated than the moment before. "But the thing was when I noticed the way you looked at me… I’d never been as hopeful as I was that fateful day my dad promised on the phone that one day he’d come back. Lies all lies." She shook her head and for a moment, she looks like she’s ready to break down but she doesn’t. She gathers herself together.
"Look Maya, that’s not true, you don’t have to throw away your own happiness for someone else’s. I’m sure your best friend could understand or-" Lucas paused. "Or until you’re ready to tell her we can date in secret." It was a pretty risky idea but he wanted to be with her so badly.
Maya put the thought into consideration, quiet for a long period of time. At first she seemed unsure but slowly, a smile spread across her lips. The once sad and broken down Maya, anxious from learning that he had a crush in her and she unexpectedly felt the same, was now smiling, a look in her eyes only he could indenify.
Walking up closer to him, she leaned up onto her tip toes, giving him an off guarded, but small peck him on the lips that may have been her first kiss but she did it so confidently, it was as If she did it for the millionth.
"Not a bad idea, cowboy." She said. "I like it."

do you have a close relationship with your parents? I'm 17 and i find myself drifting apart from mine, especially my mum. I feel as though she's constantly judging me and disapproving everything i do and the choices i make such as my friends and who i spend time with and what i want to do in uni.
My parents are divorced but I’ve never really had a relationship with my mom. I think it’s because I remind her a lot of my father. I look a lot like him and act a lot like him so it’s probably just kind of a burden to her, ya know? Like imagine going through a rough breakup and basically having to see a clone of your ex everyday. I used to be sad about it when I was younger but now I honestly could care less. Sometimes people can’t love you the way you want them to, and I’ve accepted that. I think it’s a great thing to have a relationship with your parents. I love my dad and the relationship I have with him. You should definitely try to revive your relationships with your parents. They’re getting older everyday just like you! Cherish the times you have together.
