Theo was practically bouncing on his toes, and he smiled into her kiss. Waiting for her to get settled, he only paused long enough to tell her to wait right there before practically sprinting up the stairs. Careful to tread quietly past the nursery, he slipped into the master bedroom and headed for the closet. He really hoped Eira hadn’t somehow managed to sneak a peak at them because he knew she’d be surprised just by the sight of the packages.

Two of the boxes were of equal size ---- the length about equal to the width of Theo’s shoulders, and only a bit narrower in their depth, clearly giving the appearance of being clothing boxes ----  both a beautiful gleaming white with a lovely red ribbon wrapped around each. The third package was much smaller, square, and wrapped in a festive paper that said ‘happy birthday’ all over it with a lovely frilly bow on the top. The two large boxes held the outfit he’d bought, knowing it would look stunning on Eira. The first box held the coat, the second held the dress, and the smaller box held the bracelet he had finally decided on after much deliberation. It would look elegant with the dress, he thought.

Carrying the armload of packages back down the stairs, he trotted into the living room with a smile beaming on his face as he walked over to the couch. He set them each out carefully side by side in the order she should open them, wanting her to see the coat before being surprised by the dress, and the bracelet last.

Smiling, he leaned to kiss her again. "I love you. Happy Birthday.”

She laughed softly, shaking her head a little, and grabbed her coffee mug before walking with him to the living room. The gentle playing of Sinatra on their stereo made her smile, and give his hand a little squeeze.

She took another sip of her coffee and noticed that the usual items on the coffee table - the remotes, the books they were reading, the pretty vase of fake sunflowers- were all gone. She stood on her toes, pecked a kiss to his lips, and sat down on the couch.

“Okay, present me up, I am caffeinated, I can focus now,” she said, giving him a bright smile.

He’d had a hell of a time finding a hiding spot for Eira’s presents. The bulky packages didn’t exactly fit just anywhere and be capable of being concealed easily, but he’d finally managed to bury them under some clothes on his side of the closet, and he was itching to run upstairs and grab them. 

The babies down for their nap, he’d already prepared the living room for gift opening, clearing everything off the coffee table and putting on one of their favorite Sinatra records as a gentle backdrop.

"Guilty,” he smiled, leaning down to press a kiss to her lips. “Now, come on. It’s present time.” Grabbing her hand, he pulled her with him back out to the living room.

Eira would have been perfectly happy with a nice day at home with the babies. Now that they were starting to get a bit bigger, it suddenly felt to Eira like every second she spent away with them, they’d grow another inch, and suddenly be driving the next week. Of course, as her mother-in-law had explained, that was just a new-mother touch of panic. The babies would stay small, even for newborns, for quite some time still. Eira could blink and not miss a first word or a step just yet.

The babies were especially active that day, as if they knew something was up. and by the time it was nearing six in the evening, they were both ready for a nap. Eira felt just as ready for a nap too, but taking advantage of a few quiet hours with her husband was not something to just sleep through. She loved being a mom, and she was starting to think she might actually be good at being one, but that didn’t mean she didn’t miss just being the wifey.

At the moment, she was pouring a cup of coffee for herself- and getting koalaed by a husband that towered over her. She smiled, and leaned back against him, looking up at his excited face.

“Oh, I knew you were planning something, Theo… You do not do special days quietly.”

He’d already talked to his mom the week before and asked if she could come over the night of Eira’s birthday. Knowing how Eira wasn’t fond of the idea of leaving the twins at home while they went out, he was a little hesitant to go on with his plan, but they both knew his mom would take the best kind of care of them. She could probably spoil them rotten enough to last them the rest of their lives in just one evening.

And this was something he didn’t want to miss out on. He hadn’t gotten to take Eira out even to dinner, much less dancing, in months. And with the items he’d picked out for Eira’s birthday presents, he was sure she wouldn’t want to pass up the opportunity either.

He’d been playing it very low key in the days before her birthday, acting like he didn’t have much of anything planned. Just a nice day spent with her and the babies. Obviously, he would have gotten her a gift, but he didn’t make a big deal about it. Nor did he give her any hints.

He couldn’t wait to see her reaction.

Walking up behind her, he wrapped his arms around. He definitely wasn’t going to be able to contain his excitement for much longer. Tipping his head, to he side he smiled at her while he asked, “Are you ready to find out what your surprise is?”
