i just think the reason i struggle to get on board with the concept of Havers is that he isn't really given a personality in the show, in the same way that Sophie is, or Eleanor, or Kitty's dad. Even the brief mentions of Mary's husband make me more emotional than Havers at the moment.
the only thing that makes it compelling to me is like, everything Ben Willbond puts into the Captain's facial expressions. he tells so much with so few words.
he loves Havers. but I don't know why he does. I don't know what their friendship and relationship is actually founded on.
as I said in a previous (much longer) post, there's clearly so much of their relationship that we are not privy to, but I personally would have liked to see a little bit more of why Cap loves him, a little bit more of a growing friendship, of growing feelings (no matter how one-sided). even just some flashbacks of cricket or horseplay in the lake.
but we don't get that. maybe we will in the ghosts book and maybe that will explain more to me. but as it stands currently, that's why I've never really been on board with Havers. not that Ben doesn't act it excellently and realistically but I think I personally need more than just "look how in love this man is".
