guys I’ve figured out my favourite m/f trope and i need to find more examples of it
m/f when the girl is absolutely badass and cool and the guy is absolutely smitten with her and like the guy is from the bad guys faction and holds a lot of guilt about it and the girl has some kind of disability or was bullied as a kid so she is often over looked or not seen as a threat but she’s actually really smart and badass and only the guy is able to see this
So this is like
Werner and Marie-Laure from All the Light You Cannot See
Hunter and Willow from The Owl House
And to some extent Shay and Vella from Broken Age
Oh my days this is so ultra specific
Bonus points if the narrative is written in a way that we see each characters journey and growth separately until their narratives intertwine and they meet (Werner/Marie-Laure and Shay/Vella)
#all the light we cannot see#the owl house#broken age#werner pfennig#marie-laure leblanc#hunter owl house#willow owl house#shay broken age#vella broken age#broken age in 2025?? more likely than you think

actually we don't talk enough about kiriona killing crux and how heartbreaking that scene it is. imagine growing up being beaten and kicked and kept prisoner and being locked away and told that you are nothing if not a big mistake. now imagine then finding out that it is just untrue. not because you have found your value as a person and bla bla bla but because it turns out that you're the child of like, the most important guy in the whole universe. you go back home and you finally, finally get to prove your abuser wrong! you did all of that to me and yet look! i'm actually so very important and i deserved to live amd you were wrong all along!
and yet that is not enough. you show to your abuser that they were wrong, like, you treated me like shit when i am a big deal, and they say, i don't care, that doesn't change anything. you are still something that deserved to get beaten and kicked and locked away. but, hey, since you're a big fucking deal, you get to kill this guy. you get to kill the man that has abused you all your life. you get to give the man that has been terrorizing you since childhood what he deserves. sweet revenge. it doesn't feel good. you are a big fucking deal and he is dead. you still were beaten and kicked and kept like prisoner. you still have been nothing if not a big mistake for much longer than you have been the child of the emperor.

My dad raises grass-fed beef cattle and I help him sell it, mainly by maintaining an online presence. For a while, I kept having the most ridiculous conversations with people who I assume were marketing students. I didn't want to be rude so I'd try to let them down gently but this one guy just kept insisting that with his magical marketing skills he could grow our business.
What he could not seem to comprehend is that we could not grow our business, at least not without significant time and monetary investment. Cows take two years from pregnancy to the size that you can sell. If we buy adult cows, our margins become razor thin or even negative. Even if we somehow could acquire some cows, our barn and hay fields are already near maximum capacity. Renting another field would be relatively easy, building a bigger barn not so much.
Cows are living animals, they aren't widgets that can be produced infinitely. Besides that, many businesses inherently cannot grow, because if they do they'll become something else. The delicious bakery down the street cannot produce much more than they do, if they began mass marketing and production they'd eventually be selling the equivalent of Twinkies. We grow grass-fed, organic beef, if we expanded how long would that last? Eventually we'd become the very factor farms that we hate. Some things can only ever be made on a small scale and they are usually the best things.
But also, what are they teaching them at marketing school and how is it so disconnected from reality?

the concept of alcohol is so silly to me. what do you mean you drink silly juice and then lose bodily control
#and if you drink too much silly juice you fall asleep and forget that you drink the silly juice#but your body remembers#unless you replenished it with energy (food)#which numbs the after effects of such silly juice

Just noticed something about this bit in gideon:
"Nonagesimus,” she said slowly, “the only job I’d do for you would be if you wanted someone to hold the sword as you fell on it. The only job I’d do for you would be if you wanted your ass kicked so hard, the Locked Tomb opened and a parade came out to sing, ‘Lo! A destructed ass.’ The only job I’d do would be if you wanted me to spot you while you backflipped off the top tier into Drearburh.”
So far, two of those things directly relate to things Gideon has actually done for Harrow except that they're reversed. Gideon fell on a sword for Harrow and she got her ass kicked so hard the locked tomb opened. I don't know exactly what will happen but i think "backflipping into Drearburh" is going to be one of the more devastating moments of alecto

Something I love about the locked tomb series is that Tamsyn Muir never assumes her readers are dumb. She weaves willingly obscure and complex narratives and relies on her readers to follow and untangle them. And readers are so in for the ride, eagerly scrapping for clues and information.
So many authors (and media as well) are just spelling out every single thing happening in their books. And not just plot wise, but explicitly saying to the audience what they should feel, what everything means, hidden meanings, metaphors, quite literally EVERYTHING.
It's so refreshing to see an author that trusts her readers, that leaves space for nuance, for interpretation and conversation around her books

and obviously you find yourself thinking oh i do wish i could get severed to do this one thing. would you actually maybe not. but you do wish you didn't have to undergo medical procedures you do wish you didn't have to do the things that give you anxiety you do wish you didn't have to do tedious tasks that barely even require you to be present for them. it's tempting. that's why the premise works. but the premise is also that somebody has to do it. somebody has to go to the dentist and somebody has to get on that plane and somebody has to write those thank you notes. just like somebody has to clean the house and somebody has to harvest the food you eat and somebody has to make the clothes you wear. you can't eliminate inconvenience you can only delegate it. you can't eliminate suffering you can only delegate it. and always the easiest way to live with this is to see that somebody as less than. less than you less than people. and if that somebody has to wear your body to do it well maybe it's not all that different. they're not a person. you are. it's capitalism all the way down baby

no dentist's office. no writing christmas cards. no taking flights. a world where every pain or minor annoyance is dismissed as your consciousness is replaced with a different version of you. a life without pain, or agitation, or monotony. and conversely, a life full of only that for every version of you who experiences the chores you wished to evade.
forget skipping work or school or birth. try everything. never experience anything that expires a negative emotion. the ideal consciousness sold as a product for the price of a version of you that you'll never meet.
but it doesn't matter. you carry the hurt down with you. in your hands, in your mind, your mouth. the grief mark experiences carried into his innie, gemma feeling the pain she experienced in the rooms even after she's been severed.
it doesn't matter. you carry it with you.
