Guys I think I'm hitting my mid-life crisis early.
As I've mentioned before, my dad, once I became a teenager and even into adulthood, did his best to mentally "beat" the inner child out of me. I've been working on getting younger me back, and I've made my first significant purchase in my efforts to heal him: MY FIRST COMIC BOOK.
Tumblr media
Ignore that it's the Kindle version; I'm trying to load up before I'm at sea for 6-7 months. But I've been curious about Bucky becomes the Winter Solider, and to my memory (which is pretty bad sometimes), this wasn't addressed in depth in the movies.
I've always liked superheroes, watching all the various shows that were on TV, even the 1960's Batman. I never really got to explore fandom, mostly because, again, "adults don't do that shit." I'm hoping to get familiar with the lore of my favorites, and meet new ones. Marvel in particular seems to have an unending plethora of obscure characters I've neve heard of, also, wtf you mean Spider Man isn't just Peter Parker?!
I HAVE QUESTIONS.
Tumblr media
Anyway. I've now found 2 new hobbies to enjoy when I get back from deployment: comics/superheroes and building LEGO kits, inspired largely by the Batmobile of my childhood.

My sister has worked with animals (ok, dogs and cats mostly) for years either as a groomer or in a veterinary office. She knows how to work with them, how to train them, and most importantly how to properly care for them. She has a Dalmatian who's still in his puppy years, but despite that is overall well behaved and sees me as part of his pack. I like being around him, and I even find him to be therapeutic for me when he is calm.
My dad, on the other hand, thinks he knows everything and sees his German Shepherds as an extension of his masculinity, and takes my hesitancy to interact with them as me "hating them." They are cared for, but have terrible manners, bark incessantly, and generally stress me out/trigger my anxiety whenever I visit, and I am frequently told that I need to just "get over it." I refuse to go in the house unless the dogs are crated/let out in the yard.
Post-Navy, I intend to get a pet again, leaning heavily towards a dog of my own. Outside of a veterinarian or other professional, I would only seek help/advice from my sister...definitely not my dad.
I do not "hate" dogs; I have unfortunately had more bad experiences than good ones while growing up, especially with larger breeds.
No one tells you that one day you will get older and look around and notice that 95% of ppl who own a dog should not own a dog

And Now For Something Completely Different...
A new adventure begins, as starting Monday I'll be pulling a year-long temporary duty in the ship's Maintenance Support Center. I'm not entirely sure what they do there, because this is Not A Thing on the LHD platform, and that's the only other type of ship I have experience on. I do know that's where we get technical drawings for supporting documentation when we have to do tag-outs of things that are not covered in Combat Systems' documentation (what I normally consult).
Regardless, it's fairly chill from what I hear, and will allow me more time to focus on professional development, command involvement, and meeting some new people. Unfortunately, due to be so undermanned, time for myself has gone by the wayside a bit. Part of me feels guilty, because this will be during deployment, and I have experience and NECs that my division needs, but also I feel I have earned this break over the course of my career. It'll definitely be less taxing than what I normally do and would be doing underway.
Even though I've deployed before, this one is going to be "new" because it's gonna be an entirely different experience. Different type of ship with a different mission set, different port calls, more involvement in the goings-on than an amphib that yeets Marines when she gets upset. Coincidentally, 5th Fleet has gotten spicy again, just in time for this.

Is the Pillowfort PWA easy to use? Is there a tutorial of some kind?
Pillowfort's Progressive Web App is just like browsing a mobile website, but in a handy app! We have a guide on how to install the PWA, and using it is just like using a normal website, but from your phone.
If you or anyone else has specific questions about the PWA or about Pillowfort in general, feel free to reach out and we'll be happy to help!

Statement on Unbound
Tumblr media
June 6th, 2025
Unbound, my former UK publisher, owe me a lot of money.
What’s worse, though, is that during their collapse, it came to light that they were underreporting my sales and shorting my royalty payments.
So, I haven’t been paid for the last 18 months of book sales, and when they were paying me, they were underpaying by a lot. It was gutting to hear that my second book had flopped in the US, selling under 1000 copies. Two years later I found out that it actually sold over 10,000 copies and the reason that it was selling no new copies week to week was because there were no copies left to sell.
John Mitchison, Unbound’s publisher, posted a heartfelt apology yesterday, announcing that he was stepping away from the business because authors are not getting their money. I feel a lot of empathy for John, because he, too, lost his dream to Unbound’s financial mismanagement. But the act of destroying a creative person’s confidence to hide the company’s monetary losses is unforgivable.
It took me two years to get over the feeling of rejection that came from a book that, it turned out, was successful and should have had a second printing.
That fucking sucks.
Tumblr media
p.s. go ahead and buy my books at your local bookstore. It's impossible to know which copies I got paid properly for and which ones I didn't, so don't penalize your local shop. And if you're feeling extra generous, come see me at an in-person event or grab something fun from my Threadless store.

Being constantly forlorn that I don't have a Sergei Fedorov jersey, I decided that I wouldn't do that to myself again (ok, I was a kid with no money, but still).
BEHOLD! MY LASTEST HOCKEY PURCHASE!
