10 reasons why Castiel could come back
This was originally a reply, but I want it without the original negativity.
Let me explain.
The one and only reason people think Cas is dead for good is because the network keeps saying it. If they didn’t tell us, I’d just assume he will return and I would be sure of it.
And yes, they might be telling the truth, absolutely, but a bunch of things doesn’t add up. So bear with me for a moment, I’ll put on my make-up. This is going to be a long one.
Here goes my 10+1 reasons to keep the clownery going for one last week in no particular order:
1) Unseen Castiel.
There were a few photos from a scenes we haven’t seen yet, featuring Cas. They might have been just cut, true; but they also could be from episode 20.
2) The family they’ve built.
Episode 20 is supposed to be about the brothers and “the family they’ve built around them”. And while that surely means people like Eileen, Bobby or Charlie, it sure as hell means first and foremost Cas, who is their closest friend.
3) The Empty is not a final destination.
We’ve seen a number of characters getting out of the Empty, including Cas himself. If they truly wanted to kill him permanently, it’d have been wiser to choose a different way than one we’ve seen him escape.
4) “You made it loud.”
This was said by the Empty after Jack blew up the God-bomb and so far hasn’t been touched upon. They are bound to address it in the last episode, or why else would they even mention it? Because it being loud probably means that the inhabitants (like dead angels) have been woken up. Dabb did mention a small piece of remaining mythology is supposed to be dealt with in the finale.
5) The barn scene.
We have a very little information about the finale, but we do have a picture of Sam and Dean facing a bunch of masked men in a barn. Several keen fans mentioned it looks awfully similar to a barn that appeared back in season 4, and that it was where Cas was originally supposed to die as a character, and where he was saved by Dean ( I think); even though he treated him bad. We have been told by Ruby that Empty makes you relive your memories, so that could be Cas’ memory, or be somehow tied to him.
6) “Cas. You gotta bring him back.”
While the last episode ended with Dean not even attempting to ask Jack/God to bring Cas back, it started with him demanding Chuck to do so, bargaining his own and Sam’s life (also for other people, but Cas was mentioned specifically). We were also shown Dean jump and run at the possibility of Cas returning. While it may have been done to address the loss, I find it very unlikely they’d show us Dean wanting Cas back and then have him never attempt to actually save him. This one line kind of made me believe they will at least try to get him back (and most likely succeed) in the finale.
7) Dean & Cas.
While I fully admit to shipping destiel; this is not about it. I don’t actually think we will get anything too explicit (maybe just a verbal confirmation, that’d be great).
However, it has been shown that each time Cas dies, Dean gets miserable. First when he died at the end of season 6 - he kept the trenchcoat and even Bobby told him it’s okay to grieve. Then Dean searched the fucking Purgatory for him for a year and when failing to bring him back, he was miserable, blamed himself to the point of convincing himself things went differently, and kept seeing him. From then on, when Cas died, Dean couldn’t cope. He couldn’t go on, as best seen at the start of season 13, but also in the “future” Chuck has shown Sam, when it was revealed that Dean gave up after losing Cas to Mark of Cain.
Cas has also been called Dean’s “weak spot” which would hurt “afwul lot to lose” and paralleled to other character’s significant others. Dean did treat Cas terribly in season 15, but we were also kind of told that Chuck might have hands in Dean’s behaviour during that time in general; and when in Purgatory (which is pure), Dean breaks at the thought of leaving Cas there, especially after their huge rupture. So he prays and in tears and when they reunite, he wants to say something more, and Cas stops him.
He also started to say something during the Confession™️ scene; Cas stopped him.
There’s more, but in short: Dean needs Cas in his life to be happy. Not necessarily in a romantic way, but Dean does love him. And given how Cas sacrificed himself, I can’t picture Dean being happy with leaving it at that, especially since he can be rescued.
Cas’ story may be finished, but Dean’s isn’t and I have a feeling he needs Cas in it.
8) The CW approach and the double finale.
Now, I’ve never been one to closely monitor the SPN social media. I just watched the show. However, I do know that when actor’s last episode airs, he says goodbye. He tweets goodbye and others retweet it. Misha tweeted, but a commentary. Not a goodbye. And only after a few days, when Cas’ death was being speculated about, the CW posted a “goodbye video.” Misha also gave very vague answers about the finale and Cas’ possible role in it. It might be a PR stunt to make us believe he’s gone. That has happened in television before.
+
“Inherit the Earth”. That was a season finale. But next week, that is a series finale we’re talking about. And given how weak and kind of weird was episode 19, I’d like to think they intend to go out with a huge bang in episode 20. It’s supposed to be emotional, it’s supposed to be one of the best. Yet they “tied all the loose ends” in episode 19, which could make it feel like series finale to some (*cough* bibros). The theory that ep 19 is to please the bibros is supported by the visible of lack of Cas in the “montage”, because we all know that bibros don’t like him; and the writers know that too.
So how would they hype people up for episode 20? How to make it big?
Cas. Cas has always been a fan favourite. He’s also been revealed to be the instrumental piece in Winchesters’ story - the one and only Castiel that rebelled; that had a free will which ultimately defined and shaped Sam’s and Dean’s story.
So they tell us (tying to my previous point) that he is dead. We believe it and have a huge surprise waiting for us at the end.
Or we don’t and I think they also calculated with the fact we won’t believe it (In Supernatural; nothing’s even truly dead). In that case, we post and we speculate and they gain this huge momentum and hype for the finale, because everybody wants to know!!
As in mirroring Cas, there is also Eileen, Sam’s perfect and canon love interest, who’s fate is stressed in episode 18 and yet, she’s never even mentioned in episode 19. Thaťs just weird.
Unless they want episode 19 to be “the bibro ending” and then they go full “family don’t end in blood” in 20, bringing back both Cas and Eileen.
The episode also felt a lot like Chuck’s ending that he showed Becky, but I don’t honestly think they’d go as far as revealing it all to be Chuck’s doing. But who knows, this is Supernatural.
9) “I’m not going to be hands-on.”
Jack did say that he will not interfere. Jack bringing Cas back would be not only that, but it would also invalidate Cas’ choice. Jack knew about the deal; he knew Cas must have gone willingly (even if Dean didn’t actually mention it).
So if Cas is to come back, it will be his choice to some extent. The Winchesters or Dean alone might follow him to the Empty to look for him or contact him some other way and “get” to him and making him choosing to return (probably while/by becoming human). That’s how I could see it happen.
10) Jensen had a hard time processing the ending.
He did discuss it with someone (Kripke? not sure) and he ended up being fine with it. While this doesn’t necessarily have to relate to Castiel, it does suggest that something significant has to happen in episode 20, probably to Dean specifically.
There’s nothing to process about the ending of episode 19, or so I’d like to think. So for Jensen; who knows Dean better than Dean himself; to have a hard time, it has to be either a fundamental change or something quite shocking/tragic. I don’t see the second option happening since they’re leaving the door open for future return (but nothing stays dead, so who knows). Either way; I think it has to be number 1: something fundamentally different/new to Dean’s character and story.
Jensen also did call one of the episodes “monumental”, and it wasn’t 19. It was 18.
And yes, all the people were thanos-snapped in it; which is pretty big, but they were fine the very next episode. By this logic, episode 19 should be monumental - they defeated God.
But no, he meant 18; called Despair (which we all felt when Dean was left sobbing), but used to be titled “The Truth”. And that pretty much looks like it refers to the Confession, not the snap. Meaning the episode was probably more Dean centric. So the description could very well be refering to big thing that happened to Dean - the confession. Which, I would say, would only end up monumental if followed up on. It hasn’t been followed up on yet.
11) Cas’ death being permanent isn’t integral and doesn’t make much sense for the story’s end.
Him dying/being gone temporarily might be. While his demise was beautiful, poignant and meaningful, it felt forced. We knew there was a deal and we expected it to come back and bite him in the ass, but honestly I’d not have imagined for it to be his “end”. His death, however, may have served for several things, such as:
Dean’s story - with Cas’ confession and sacrifice, Dean has to confront himself about who he is, who he wants to be and what he wants. Without the life-death situation, Cas wouldn’t have confessed, and Dean wouldn’t have been forced to reflect, which ultimately helped him spare Chuck’s life. While Cas being dead permanently would have had the same effect, there would be no reason to add the “I love you” element, and no reason for Dean to not have mentioned it to Sam. As I said earlier; Dean’s story isn’t finished.
The Empty - as someone has mentioned, the title card looks awful lot like the black goo representing the Empty. So it’s possible that the Empty has something more to say in the story and with Chuck and Billie dealth with, the only reason for the Winchesters to interact with it now would be to get Cas back. With the deal being in the making for some time, it becoming fulfilled would be a great way to incorporate the Empty to the final episodes without it being forced. If the goal is an interaction/resolution with the Empty, Cas doesn’t have to and probably can’t stay dead.
The bibro ending - Cas’ death may have been ultimately used as a way to “eliminate” him from episode 19 in order to deliver the “bibro” ending for the stuck-up “fans”. And with it being done, especially the cringy way it was, the writers can now bring Cas back comfortably. Because if the bibros get pissed, they can just ignore the final episode and still have their ending. This seems like a likely option, because of the same happening to Eileen.
The family don’t end in blood - with the story’s message being about love and family overcoming everything and “nothing ever stays dead in Supernatural”, it just doesn’t make sense to kill and keep Castiel dead so close to the ending. Sure, a shock value is a thing, but legacy is one too. The show doesn’t want to be remembered for “bury your gays”, does it? It also feels that leaving Cas out like that is disrespectful to the character and to Misha Collins, who carried the show with Jensen and Jared and absolutely deserves to be there till the very end.
To conclude
I don’t want to hype myself or anybody else up for something that might not happen. It is a possibility that I must acknowledge. All that I wrote may be explainable/disproven in some way or another. I might be just holding onto air and clowning.
But I also see all this and deep down I get this spark of hope. Because I love Supernatural, and I love Castiel and I know there are so many people like me.
And I want to believe that the writers know that and that they will deliver a worthy ending to the series.
But if it does indeed turn out to be true and Cas does not come back, we wouldn’t have been crazy for believing he could. All speculations aside, the story is not finished without him.
It’d be bad writing.

it actually makes a LOT of fucking sense to draw from 10x05 Fan Fiction if their plan was the kill the writers/Chuck and leave the finale up to us. like,
from one of the opening lines in 10x05:
“Instead it’s this awful, unbelievable horror story. Like that stuff really happens.. theater is about life, you know? Truth. Truth! Where is the truth in “Supernatural?”“
I AM FLOORED. the truth is literally what this entire season has been about. specifically, it’s been about dean finding the truth, about dean struggling with it.
10x05 is also when we get a “we got work to do” closing of the impala trunk, which is also referenced as the last shot from the montage of 15x19. now we’re at the intermission:
Tumblr media
(also from the montage)
15x20 is part two. this is where the fans write the ending, now that chuck is dead.
we get talk of destiel, we get a meta episode—and this entire season has been meta!!! killing the author!! making up the story ourselves!! and Fan Fiction is entirely about that. and what do they do in Fan Fiction?
Tumblr media
prepare for canon destiel.

Things people forget about Dean Winchester:
Friendly reminder that Dean is a much more complex character than we give him credit for.
Tumblr media
1.  He’s highly intelligent.
Sam is generally regarded as “the smart one,” but the only real difference between them in regards to intelligence is the fact that Sam pursued higher education while Dean stuck to hunting with his father.  Had Dean pursued a college career, there’s little doubt in my mind that he would have been just as smart as Sam.
Tumblr media
(Yes, I’m serious.)
Aside from the fact that he evidently enjoys reading some pretty heavy stuff (he’s referenced The Iliad, the Odyssey, Slaughterhouse 5, Cat’s Cradle, Aesop’s Fables, and even Shakespeare) and is secretly the biggest nerd in the entirety of the universe…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
…We can’t forget the fact that he basically fully supported both himself and Sam since he was younger than ten.  In their childhood flashbacks, we see him caring for Sam for days (and sometimes weeks) on end.
Tumblr media
Even when he was approximately four years old, he showed a surprising amount of emotional intelligence:  during his and Sam’s trip to heaven, we see him comforting his mother and reassuring her that John loves her.
Tumblr media
2.  He has a lot of typically feminine interests.
At first glance, Dean can appear to be the epitome stereotypical, hypermasculine white man archetype, so commonly present in almost all forms of modern media.  Even casual fans should be able to decipher that this is not true, and I’m not even talking about the Taylor Swift music and pink satin panties.
Tumblr media
Or the fact that he loves shows like Doctor Sexy M.D.
Tumblr media
Or the fact that he’s what can best be described as really, REALLY high-maintenance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also loves cooking and cleaning.
Tumblr media
And is extremely good with babies and children.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not to mention the fact that he’s basically more of a mom to Sam than he is his brother.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3.  He’s probably been the victim of sexual violence.
On a more serious note, Jensen and other cast members have stated that at some point in his adolescence, Dean probably had to do some form of prostitution in order to support Sam.
Tumblr media
Not to mention the somewhat disturbing fact that he recognized the feeling of being roofied in The Purge. (Of course, he deflected this by claiming it was a precaution, which I personally don’t buy for a second).
Tumblr media
Also, to believe that he didn’t undergo some form of sexual abuse during his forty years in hell is not only overly optimistic, but extremely naive (especially considering the way demons have approached him before).
Tumblr media
Finally, Dean’s promiscuity and obsession with sex is a surprisingly common defense mechanism among survivors, stemming from a desire to regain control over their own bodies and sexuality.
4.  He struggles with depression and alcoholism.
Dean has very visible bouts of depression at different points throughout the series, and he deals with all of them in similar ways.
Tumblr media
The first appears to be after his stay in hell.  He suffers from insomnia, nightmares, and drinks constantly.
Tumblr media
We see him “coping” with Castiel’s death similarly in season seven, after which he has nightmares of the event in question, subsequent insomnia, and again, more drinking.
Tumblr media
This becomes a more common event throughout seasons nine and ten, during his struggle with the mark of Cain.
Tumblr media
Even Demon!Dean isn’t immune.
Tumblr media
But on a more positive note…
5.  He’s bi as hell (whether the writers know it or not).
I’ve heard people say Dean wasn’t “accused” of being bisexual until Cas was introduced.  Well, I truly pity those people – it must be difficult to be visually and mentally impaired.
For one thing, his siren was male.
Tumblr media
It’s implied he had sex with a gay dominatrix.
Tumblr media
He flirts
Tumblr media
with guys
Tumblr media
CONSTANTLY.
Tumblr media
Not to mention his “summer of love” with Crowley.
Tumblr media
But it’s true that Castiel takes the cake.
Tumblr media
For one thing, they’re basically married, and have been since season four.
Tumblr media
And they have a ridiculous amount of sexual tension.
Tumblr media
So.
Tumblr media
Much.
Tumblr media
Tension.
Tumblr media
And zero personal space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, what the fuck even is this shit.
Tumblr media
JUST FUCKING KISS ALREADY BEFORE ONE OF YOU EXPLODES.
Tumblr media
There is literally no doubt in my mind that Dean is bi, whether the writers intended him to be or otherwise.  They gave us great characters, and we can interpret them however we please.

Dean is bi, a succinct look over the seasons
I’ve seen a few posts about how if/when we get Bi!Dean (and Destiel) some people are worried others may cry ‘fan service’ purely because they haven’t noticed it as a continuous theme through the 12 years of the show so far. So I just wanted to compile a few snippets showing that it has been there all along, it’s not a complete list as I would have to literally spend weeks doing this as there is so much material, but here’s just a few to get started!
1x07: So, it’s season 1, everything is just ramping up so the subtext is very sub…
Tumblr media
Dean rejects painting the college kid yet immediately picks up a skin mag (making it sexual), ignoring the actual mag whilst ogling the kid and noticing the point just above his ass that Sam missed? While Sam in an extremely NON sexual manner does the actual painting? Nice…
2x11: There is no way that scene in Playthings is not meant for the audience to notice and pick up on.
Tumblr media
We are supposed to pick up on Sam’s totally accurate and straight faced response to this and how Dean reacts, precisely due to it’s accuracy:
Sam: “Well, you are kinda butch, they probably think you’re overcompensating”. Sam is totally straight faced as this is exactly what he thinks is the case as is taking the opportunity to let Dean know that he knows.
Tumblr media
source: @shixpe.   Meanwhile Dean’s face is like ‘shit… I’m that obvious?’
*TINK LOOKS INTO THE CAMERA*
Season 4: Intro Cas. Now for the ramping up… Dean not so subtly going from small moments of showing himself looking at a guy occasionally or projecting onto Sam “how gay are you?” but now literally licking his own lips, staring at Cas’ lips, comparing them to Thelma and Louise, using his “last day on earth” line on him, I mean, ALL the Cas related chemistry that I won’t even go into here, but here’s a helpful post that has just a few examples of Cas-Dean chemistry over the years which is totally different to any other variation of Cas-Dean, because, that’s love not just lust.
6x09: The one when Dean specifically, not Dean and Sam, is associated with fairies.
Tumblr media
source: @spn-liveblog
Where they sexualised the fairies as naked ladies with nipples on show. Where it’s textually and clearly brought to the audiences attention in this same episode that most people associate fairies with queer men.
Where Dean probably “serviced” Oberon king of the fairies (an easy link to queer King Oberyn in GoT, who’s name Dean uses in 12x18 while Sam uses the very heterosexual Stark name).
Meanwhile Sam nicely and true to form, even soulless, stays resolutely heterosexual and bangs the hippie chick while throughout the whole episode in contrast to Dean is hitting on any woman that moves.
It’s not just that Dean is consistently associated with queer subtext but also how Sam is NOT that shows how purposefully this is done for Dean.
7x12: This episode follows multiple episodes with so much “Dean was is in love with Cas subtext” (Cas dying, the trenchcoat, Sam and Bobby’s reactions, Dean’s alcoholism and coping mechanisms coming out, 7x05: Dean projecting Cas’ betrayal and their subsequent lack of communication which led to Cas’ death onto the witch couple by getting them to communicate leading to their making out furiously… immediately followed by Sam trying to get Dean to talk to him about Cas, 7x09 “Cas, black goo…” etc etc etc…
We have not only blatant Dean-is-queer moments:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But also the whole episode centers around an immortal who dies because they were in love with a Human who couldn’t forgive them for lying…
Then from 8 onwards we have more Dean / Cas parallels with canon romantic couples: Jess/Sam, Mary/John, Cain/Colette, Don/Maggie, David/Violet, Dean/Cassie, Chronos/Lila, Cacao/Betsy, Jesse/Cesar, Jeffery/his demon, Sam/Amelia, Benny/Andrea, Prometheus/Hayley, Dean/Amara, Ishim/Lily, Gavin/Fiona, Corbin/Michelle…
Ok so this isn’t a Destiel post, it’s a Dean is bi post, but you know, at this point they’re kind of interlinked, because Cas has a male body from season 9 onwards, that isn’t his vessel, it’s him, so there you go, have that too.
10x01:
Tumblr media
You mean THESE triplets? The only twins/triplets in the bar? Where the guy behind looks like he’s the additional triplet by his placement and his outfit being the exact in between of the who playing? The ones who Crowley was seen talking to again in the same episode?
Tumblr media
Either way, even if for some reason it wasn’t these particular triplets, cos you know, triplets are super common, it’s still heavily implied (and referred to again throughout seasons 10,11 and 12) that Dean had some kind of sex with triplets and Crowley, who “rubbed off all over him”…
Tumblr media
On top of that, sorry to be crude, but we also have these moments:
Tumblr media
“…well, you could…” *insert Drowley meta here*.
and:
Tumblr media
Then, back to the less crude side, 10x16:
Tumblr media
So…. Dean is sick of hiding behind his facade? Do you think maybe it’s time someone came along and helped him see that he no longer needs to hide behind this wall? For a whole two seasons subtext be based around showing that Dean is in love with Cas and also kinda doesn’t mind pop music for example, is actually not quite the dude bro he makes himself our to be and has a facade up that stops him from showing it?
Insert Amara. Whose name literally means Love. The expositional character of Dean’s innermost feelings, the extension of which is Mary, who ultimately leads to these feelings coming out after having been addressed for these two seasons…
Where an all knowing love - monster taking on her appearance tells him:
“I can see inside your heart. Feel the love you feel. Except…it’s cloaked in shame”.
Where in the SAME EPISODE Dean tells Sam that he doesn’t feel love for Amara. So who can this possibly be referring to? For whom might he feel love cloaked in SHAME based on the last 10 years of what he have learned about Dean? Where only two episodes before Dean is told by a “wise woman” (who in film always sees truth) that he is pining for someone. PINING, a term interchangeable with LONGING. With whom do we associate LONGING?
I mean honestly… like we need an exposition for what this is all about…
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, if there were any issues with Dean feeling that Hunting and being queer are frowned upon they nicely insert an amazingly, fantastically, blatantly mirrored Dean/Jesse Cas/Cesar episode, even down to the brother focused story, the way Cesar and Dean click and interact so similarly to Dean/Cas and the shoulder patting being the most we actually see of them being romantic, I mean JEEZ:
Tumblr media
And now if he needed to hammer it home even further:
Tumblr media
I mean, I think he gets the picture… it’s nothing to be ashamed of now.
So now thanks to his own personal growth, all this and the extension of Amara, Mary, Dean has finally faced his past, his feelings and given his wall the metaphorical and literal heave - ho:
Tumblr media
In conclusion:
1. Dean is bisexual. Dean has always been bisexual, he was closeted for so long, but after all this time and thanks to his being in love with one guy in particular and Mary’s role in his self awareness and self acceptance arc, now is more or less the perfect moment to come out…
2. Dean met and over time went from lusting after to being deeply in love with Cas, who is now male, it is HIS body and he identifies with it as such, who has inconveniently right after this moment of final clarity for Dean, died what seemed to Dean to be a true and permanent Death while he screamed ‘noooo’, fell to his knees in shock and nicely paralleled two of the most doomed - romance canon couples in the show within 5 minutes (Jess and Sam and Cain and Colette).
Both sides of this have come to a climax at the end of season 12, I believe leading to things really happening now moving forwards… So this, when it all comes to the forefront is NOT fan service.
It has been there all along, at first subtly, then growing, finally becoming core to the main plot of the character and plot based storylines until this point.

But even gunmetal can warp and even wolf’s teeth can dull and I do not want to see him break the way old and worn and overused things do. I do not want to see him go up in flames the way all heroes end up martyrs. I know that you will tell me that the world needs him. The world needs his heart and his faith and his courage and his strength and his bones and his teeth and his blood and his voice and his– The world needs anything he will give them. Damn the world, and damn you too. Damn anyone that ever asked anything of him, damn anyone that ever took anything from him, damn anyone that ever prayed to his name. You know that he will give them everything until there is nothing left of him but the imprint of dust where his feet once trod. You know that he will bear the world like Atlas until his shoulders collapse and his knees buckle and he is crushed by all he used to carry. Dear God, you have already made an Atlas. You have already made an Achilles and an Icarus and a Hercules. You have already made so many heroes, and you can make another again. You can have your pick of heroes. So please, I beg you– he is all that I have, and you have so many heroes and the world has so many more. Let him be soft, and let him be mine.”
