i feel like you know back on deviantart / when dA commentary youtubers were A Thing pretty much any discussion was split into the sides of "it's okay to bully people who aren't studying/use bases because they're kneecapping their artistic growth and they're going to have to learn to deal with unsolicited criticism eventually so it's fine if i do it" and "everything can be a stylistic choice and the fundamentals make pictures boring and it's all personal taste so all critique is invalid" and i still occasionally see it kicking around on twitter and i just. god both things are so dumb. why did we ever have base discourse. who give a shit.

people drawing for fun is fine. hot take i know. if someone is happy drawing near identical anime girl images every day and never feels a need to improve they are a far happier person than i am, and even if someone is a kid who wants to get better but doesn't do the practice, unless they come up to you specifically and ask specifically for critique on something, the critique is still unsolicited and is still likely the best thing you can do to crush their spirit into a fibrous powder. ("them's the breaks" is only the breaks because of people thinking them is.) and this is exactly why i feel no need to pull punches when talking in the abstract about what is bad or good when it comes to objective things like the fundamentals. it is not a moral failure to be bad at art. bad art is the most important thing in the world.
