‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ At least he didn’t try anything…

‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ “It’s probably gonna be a long time before you stop being afraid, but… you’re getting stronger every day. You know that?”

Bee knew. Of course he did. It was Pico who got him out of that hellhole. It was Pico who kept him safe even now

His gentle touch may not have been enough to stop his trembling, but it was enough to remind Bee to take in a deep, calming breath, then exhale slowly. Everything was fine now. Bee was fine now.

“Am I...?” Bee asked softly. “You really think so?”

He’d been trying, certainly, but it hadn’t been easy. He wasn’t sure if it would ever be easy.

But things were getting better every day.

‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ A glove-clad hand came to rest upon Bee’s, carefully grasping it; he was firm, but gentle and affectionate, not at all like the frightening touches the boy had become accustomed to at home.

‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ “That doesn’t matter,” Pico told him gently. “I mean it. You can say those things as many times as it takes.”

‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Pico would reassure him as many times as it took.

It was easy for Pico to say, though far harder in actual practice. 

Back at home his parents’, repeating himself was just like asking to be hit. Begging, even. He tried not too complain too much, for fear Pico may grow tired of hearing Bee’s constant fears. Lucky for him, he had his boyfriend to remind him all was okay in times like this.

He glanced down at Pico’s hand on his as he took in deep breaths. He didn’t want to break down again. He was tired of crying. But there was so much trauma, Bee often ended up overwhelmed by his own feelings time and time again.

His shoulders began to shake as he tried to hold back tears. Why was such a gentle touch enough to break him? He didn’t understand. Maybe it was because he was used to being hurt if someone touched him. Yes, that was probably it.

Finally, he gathered his nerves enough to speak.

“I ran into Dad the other day. He didn’t do anything, didn’t even really say anything. But I just felt him looking at me, judging me, hating me. It was just too much.”

Even with his parents out of his life, Bee still struggled from time to time. It got better every day, of course, but sometimes he still had nightmares. Sometimes he still managed to narrowly avoid running into his parents. It wasn't as hard as it used to be, but it was never easy.

After a near run in with his father, Bee barely managed to run away. He could still feel his father's sharp following him.

But he was safe now, back in the apartment he'd managed to get with his boyfriend. Everything was better now. Bee could paint to his heart's content, and no one could stop him.

Still...

"I know," he said softly. He couldn't hold eye contact at all. "I just feel bad saying the same stuff over and over."

Depression had been about to swallow the boy whole when he heard Pico's words. They brought him back to reality, and he couldn't help but breathe a small sigh of relief. He didn't know what he'd do without Pico.

"Forever," he repeated with a small smile. "Thank you. I needed to hear that."

Oh, great, Bee couldn’t help but think. Now you’ve made him mad.

He couldn’t help being so jumpy though. Usually, if someone touched him, it meant Bee was about to be in a world of hurt. He still had scars as proof of that. Pico, of course, was an obvious exception. But this man wasn’t Pico.

Though maybe he wasn’t as bad as he seemed.

He shuffled his feet anxiously as he dared to meet the other’s eyes.

“N-nice, huh?” he asked softly. “Sorry I kinda flinched away. Bad habit.”

It seemed the easiest way to describe his trauma without getting too in depth.

Bee's smile faltered. Normally he doesn't let people touch him, especially if they're not Pico. But this boy had definitely caught him off guard.

He laughed nervously. "Yeah, they are kinda small, huh?"
