This YouTube comment has been on my mind since I finished SOTR so this is what I came up with:
Lucy Gray was the mockingbird, living on the outskirts of district 12 and was there at the wrong time when they were forced to stay there after the Dark Days. They were subjected to the Capitol’s politics despite not being a part of Panem, technically speaking. Lucy Gray became part of the Games and, likewise, the mockingbird became affiliated with the Capitol through the jabberjay’s release into the woods, but it still continued to sing its own song.
Haymitch was the jabberjay, a Capitol tool that did what it had to in order to survive. The Capitol thought they could control them, but they retaliated in the form of rebellion. Haymitch refused to be a piece in their game and tried to end it, and the jabberjay, in the eyes of the Capitol, created a freak of nature that showed the Capitol’s lack of complete control.
Katniss was the mockingjay, a slap in the face of the Capitol, something that was never meant to exist. Together, the song of the mockingbird that lived on for generations and the stubbornness of the jabberjay that refused to die, the mockingjay had the best of both worlds. It was a symbol of rebellion and unity.

so harrowhark nonagesimus is often portrayed as raised as some form of generic-leaning-catholic christian in real world adaptations, which is fair. however, although it matches aesthetically with the prayer beads and the kneeling, i think that this interpretation undersells the fact that the ninth house practices a substantially different religion from the rest of the houses in many ways. in the other houses there are more religious and less religious people, but they all have the same major prayer and such, which the ninth does not share. the ninth house religion:
- considers themselves part of the same religion as the rest of the houses, but are often not given the same courtesy, and are generally considered weirdly culty, or at the most charitable, a fascinating anomaly
- worships jod as the foremost creator, but also shows great reverence to a secondary saint/prophet, who is not recognized by the more mainstream of the houses
- fixates on an upcoming apocalypse that their house will be the witness to and bear the burden of
- is far more demanding than many of the other houses, placing more importance on the ritual aspect of worship, much of which is secret from outsiders
- has specific religious outfitting (face paint etc) that must be worn by all adherents, at all times
weighing the evidence thus, it is with a heavy heart that i have concluded that harrowhark nonagesimus is a mormon.

rotating john gaius in my head and how he is both a coloniser and a victim of colonisation and how, when presented with the opportunity to rebuild all of society from the ground-up, chose not to model it after his own oppressed culture, but instead after an aesthetic VERY CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH WHITE SUPREMACY (neoclassicism), and how his daughter is the only thing in his entire, expansive empire that he named in his language in ten thousand years, and how he perpetuates the cycle he himself was a victim of. tearing my hair out tazmuir WHEN I GET YOU

I’m curious what everyone thinks about narration alone— of course we all love all three characters but whose head did you enjoy being in the most?

Ianthe Tridentarius the character of all time, shes a weird perverted sadistic bitch, shes a genius, shes immortal, she ate her cavalier because she wanted ultimate power and has absolutely no shame about it, shes the only person who left Canaan House having gotten exactly what she wanted and had fun while doing it, she called Harrow Daddy, fucking Daddy in the prologue of HtN, shes in love with Harrow, she helped Harrow give herself a lobotomy, somehow these two things are not in opposition to one another. I’m absolutely certain that she’s barely in the first book because if she said anything ever it would kill the gravitas of her villain monologue at the end because she’s such a weird perverted freak and she’s the funniest character in the second book for the same reason, I hate her, shes great

Weird/anomalous things about G1deon and Pyrrha:
- Mercy calls it “Pyrrha’s trial”
- Pyrrha says that she cracked open Gideon’s skull and sieved his brain fluid after he did the trial. And that the only other pair who tried it were Mercy and Cristabel, because only Christabel would put up with being trepanned in the regular.
- as they’re breaking into the tomb, Pyrrha says that she and Mercy and Cass worked with cell thanergy.
- Unlike any other cavalier, Pyrrha seems to prefer guns to swords.
- G1deon is a thanergy void, which isn’t something we hear about anywhere else.
- Aside from going into the river and draining thanergy, I don’t think we hear about G1deon doing any other necromancy?
- When G1deon is introduced, he’s explicitly described as not having the necromantic build of the other two lyctors.
- Pyrrha tells Gideon that “more got taken from me than from you”, but in Nona Pyrrha certainly seems like a complete person. G1deon seems more like the one who might be lacking something.
- Pyrrha calls him G—— once
- Pyrrha describes the tower princes’ uniforms as “disco”. Maybe just an oversight, but seems unlikely that Muir would forget that none of them should remember disco, she’s usually so precise.)
- Jod kept G—-‘s arm after he died, and “had plans for that arm”.
Thoughts:
- It seems pretty clear that at Canan House, Pyrrha was acting like a necromancer and Gideon was acting like a cavalier. Whether that means she was actually the one with aptitude, or that he had the aptitude but they were just interested in the work of the other role, I don’t know. Cracking open skulls and sieving brain fluid does seem like a necromantic thing to do, though. And Lyctor!G1deon doesn’t seem to do much normal necromancy.
- Pyrrha remembers something from before the resurrection.
- Quite possibly G1deon was the first human resurrection?

Hi my name is Harrow'hark Nonagesimus and I have 200 souls trapped in me and short choppy black hair that grows too fast ever since my DIY lobotomy and black eyes like the rest of the Ninth and a lot of people tell me I look like Anastasia (AN: if u don't know who she is get da hell out of here!). I'm not related to the girl in the tomb but I wish I was because she's a major fucking hottie. I'm a space Kiwi but my teeth are straight and white. I have skin that's only described as somewhat lighter than Gideon's and is always covered in greasepaint. I'm also a necromancer, and I live in a castle called Drearburh on Pluto where I'm the Reverend Daughter (I'm seventeen). I'm a goth (in case you couldn't tell) and I wear mostly black. I love the Ninth's dress code and I always adhere to it. For example today I was wearing a ribcage corset, a black shirt, black pants, black boots, and a black cloak. I was wearing skull facepaint, specifically The Chain. I was walking outside Drearburh. It’s on Pluto so there was hardly any sun, which I was very happy about. Gideon Nav stared at me. I put up my middle finger at her.

I got commissioned to paint griddlehark imagined as a classic romance novel cover, which needless to say is one of the greatest commissions of all time and I had an absolute blast.
Tumblr media
Per the commissioner's request, I've also uploaded this art to INPRNT (link here).
Art without typography and a mock-up for fun under the cut!
