Yoru HCs by a Japanese American Pt. 4
Yoru, Jett and Sage like talking about cultural differences. they’ll discuss the different ways they eat food, differences in chopsticks, fashion, pretty much anything you can think of.
because Japanese uses the original writing form of Chinese characters (which they call kanji) and mainland Chinese uses a simplified form, Yoru and Sage sometimes get into discussions about how to read each character and alternate meanings unique to their own languages.
nobody else really understands their debates, but it’s interesting to see Yoru and Sage hunched over paper while scribbling in Chinese characters. these can go on for hours.
Yoru is very petty when it comes to people mispronouncing his name. in situations that aren’t so urgent, he will either ignore them until they get it right, or will correct them, and bring it up an argument years later.
the valorant agents call Yoru “rift walker” because of this. it’s an easier and less troublesome way to get his attention. besides, Yoru grudgingly thinks it sounds cool, so he lives with it.
Yoru spent much of his childhood being competitive, so besides video games he likes some traditional Japanese games, like shogi and mahjong.
he’s actually pretty good in the latter, but since it’s more of a gambling game he will only play it to flex. sage is apparently decent too, and he really wants to play against her, but they’ll have to study up on each other’s variants (since China and Japan have different versions) and get two more players before even starting.
outside of Japan, Yoru is the go-to if anyone makes a mess of themselves while eating out, or just getting sick. he always carries around multiple little packs of tissues on him, just in case his hands get dirty or public bathrooms run out of paper towels.
if you ask him for tissues on more than one occasion, he will roll his eyes and complain, but will still hand you them anyway.
pretty much everyone carries around handkerchiefs/tenugui in Japan, for things like blotting off sweat during the summer, wiping hands after washing them, using them as placemats for eating, etc.. Yoru has some that he swaps out depending on his outfit, but his favorite handkerchief has a dark blue seigaiha pattern with an orange tiger embroidered in the corner.
if you happen to cry and Yoru offers you this handkerchief rather than a tissue, it means he personally feels more comfortable with you.
he still expects that you wash it and give it back to him, though. no exceptions.
the easiest way to piss Yoru off or get him to avoid you is to request him to say Japanese pop culture references that are popular in the West. if someone asks him to “kabedon” them he will straight up leave without looking back. it gets really, really annoying for him.
on the other hand, the easiest way to get Yoru to warm up to you is taking the time to respectfully learn the little things about his own culture. he easily gets homesick, so every bit matters to him.
when people listen to him open up about his past, like the local shops he went to or even the way a particular street curves, he will be a little more friendly to them. if they’re legitimately interested and engage with him, even better.
if he hasn’t been to Japan in a while, making him ujikintoki kakigori (shaved ice with green tea syrup, red bean paste, and matcha ice cream) during the summer will literally make him feel like tearing up inside.

Yoru HCs by a Japanese American Pt. 3
Yoru saw the Tokyo Drift MV when he was little and decided to make it his entire personality.
he tries to be effortlessly cool and suave. most of the time, he just comes off as an ass.
Yoru also likes to collect things. he’s genuinely passionate about some of them, like sneakers and Pokémon cards, others are more just for clout (like his knife collection).
stop name dropping brands during missions, Yoru. you’re not as cool as you think you are.
he likes the whole racecar aesthetic and image, but he doesn’t care about cars themselves.
similarly, he is a fan of the Yomiuri Giants (the Tokyo baseball team), but it’s more because he likes the team colors and jerseys. it’s not like he hates baseball, because he can swing a bat pretty well, but he doesn’t really follow the baseball scene.
Yoru secretly likes old Japanese delinquent media with the protagonists having hearts of gold. he’s grown up watching shows where gangs customize their school uniforms with long black coats and pants and swing around nail-imbedded baseball bats.
"So much fuss over nothing. Someone get me a bat, I'll finish this.”
what a nerd.
he’s especially a huge fan of sukeban in media (Japanese girl gangs). the fact that they created their own groups out of spite for not being included in male-led gangs makes him so hype. he thinks the cropped tops and long skirts are an incredible fashion statement and likes to follow the same silhouette in his own outfits off-duty.
Yoru’s favorite character tends to be the “anego” (lit. “big sister,” or leader) of these girl gangs, the one who is levelheaded, commanding, and straightforward, but brutally defeats her enemies if her gang members are hurt.
Yoru has a large collection of stuffed animals that he won from claw machines. he has no idea what to do with them, and it’ll be a waste to throw them out, so they’re just scattered all over his place in Japan. he brings a couple to base, including his prized Gengar.
Yoru also likes cats. stray cats seem to be drawn to him. he complains that this is a burden rather than a blessing, but he always smiles when he gets to scratch a cat behind its ears, so he’s 100% lying.
Yoru is very particular about hygiene and detests those 5 in 1 bottles that often show up in men’s hygiene sections. he’s really into haircare and skincare as well. even if he looks dead tired, his skin is always glowing, which many of the other Valorant agents envy.
one of the biggest parts of the culture shock Yoru has when going to other countries is the perception of baths. to Yoru, soaking in a bath is a daily necessity after a shower, while to many others, a bath is a luxury. Yoru will rage about this to anyone who’s willing to listen.
it’s not like he’s obsessed with baths, but he just misses bath culture in Japan. Yoru can get terribly homesick.
Yoru also doesn’t like getting dirty. he carries around spare pairs of disposable chopsticks, so when he eats snacks like chips he won’t run the risk of getting crumbs all over him.
at first, the Valorant agents think it’s a little strange, watching him walk around picking out chips from a bag with chopsticks, but then they quickly realize how resourceful this is.
they’re a little mad that they haven’t thought of this, actually. Yoru constantly gloats about this.
on base, Yoru has a pair of lacquered chopsticks. they’re a polished dark blue with intricate golden leaf and carnation patterns twisting up the sides.
when Yoru washes them and leaves them out to dry, it’s an unspoken rule that no one is allowed to touch them but him.
on Jett and Sage’s birthdays, Yoru gifts them each their own pair of lacquered chopsticks. it’s a surprisingly thoughtful gift that they love.

Yoru HCs by a Japanese American Pt. 2 (these get extremely specific, and disorganized)
Yoru’s favorite late night snack is tamago kake gohan. it reminds him of home. cracking a raw egg and dashing some soysauce over rice is ingrained in his routine. it’s nothing too heavy, which is perfect.
though if he’s in a country where the eggs aren’t always safe to consume raw, someone’s going to have to hold him back. Yoru likes it too much and will be all dramatic if he can’t eat it.
Yoru doesn’t actually really like going to the gym. he used to go purely so he didn’t lose breath while running, but unfortunately, he has to go more now because he’s an agent, which he’s not exactly happy about.
he reminds himself that he looks hot with abs, which finally gets him to the gym.
but honestly, Yoru would much rather spend his free time researching his lost ancestor, playing games, shopping, or reading books.
Yoru is a history nerd, specifically for Japanese history. ask him anything about the Edo period and he’ll light up like a Christmas tree, scrambling to explain things in the most coherent way possible. it’s one of the few subjects that you can really engage him in.
he’s also super knowledgeable about traditional Japanese forms of art and culture, and will listen raptly in turn if anyone explains their own. his own culture means a lot to him, so he’ll show the same respect he gives his own background to others.
in contrast, he pretty much shuts down in front of STEM related topics. computer science, mathematics and chemistry bore him to death. you can see his eyes glazing over, as well as his body language becoming restless. even if (on a rare occasion) he is trying to be polite, he somehow always communicates that he’s disinterested.
he’s the first one that leaves the room when the attention is on killjoy and she starts to talk about her tech shenanigans. he doesn’t understand, nor does he care to.
Yoru likes to blow off steam by heading to arcades in Tokyo, and he knows all the best spots. which ones are more for tourists, the ones that are more local, the ones that are the most updated, and the ones that have more old school games. he is incredibly good at driving games and (of course) shooters. he sucks at rhythm games, though.
he doesn’t enjoy PC games (ironically) and sticks more to consoles, because of all his time spent in arcades. and he’s more of a lone wolf, so he takes to singleplayer games pretty well, like Pokémon. he’s a huge fan of Gengar, by the way. if you ask him, he’ll say “we have a spiritual connection because we’re both cool and do cool shit.”
Phoenix agrees that Yoru and Gengar are similar but for a different reason, his being “both of them are mischievous little fuckers.”
he’s just bitter that Yoru’s better than him at smash. Yoru utterly decimates the Valorant agents when using Isabelle and Pichu, and it pisses them off because they know he’s doing it on purpose.
I mean, if a tiny dog and mouse beat the crap out of me every game, I’d be pretty mad too.
Yoru also likes reading, and will pick up books related to history and mythology. he’s bad at finishing them though, because he leaves a book halfway finished to start another one.
he’s watched some anime growing up, like Pokémon and Detective Conan, and doesn’t really care all that much for anime now that he’s older. he’s slightly confused and weirded out that people overseas are so into it in general, and that they keep asking him about what he’s watched since he’s Japanese.
he’s picked up death note recently though because everyone kept recommending it to him, and got hooked. his hatred for Light compels him to finish the series.
he casually reads manga, one of his favorites being Slam Dunk for the art.
Yoru is pretty interested in art in general. he enjoys calligraphy and graffiti, and he likes to go to museums and art galleries to check out both historical pieces and the newest upcoming artists.
his jacket and gloves are custom-made, and he designed the big logo on his back by himself.

Yoru HCs by a Japanese American
this man knows Tokyo like the back of his hand. he knows all the backstreets, alleys, shortcuts to train stations, etc.
he likes poking around quiet streets, just to find any cool shops he might come back to.
Yoru gets homesick very easily, even if he’s good at not showing it. he has a folder of backed up Tokyo scenery photos on his phone that he sometimes scrolls through when he’s in a bad mood.
if you don’t know this, translating between English and Japanese is utter mental gymnastics. the grammar and cultural differences make the languages completely different. Yoru is adept at managing this, but he still finds difficulty in exactly translating his words from Japanese to English to the rest of the Valorant agents. he often just gives up in the end.
when people ask Yoru to repeat what he just said, you can immediately see irritation starting to cloud his face. he’s not frustrated at them, he takes their words to mean that they can’t understand his pronunciation, which he can become very insecure about. he prefers to speak only when needed, and “needed” is him dissing his enemies.
Yoru is much more of a chatterbox in Japanese, obviously. but he still has that sarcastic bite, and likes to be cool and dramatic.
Yoru does NOT know how to cook. he knows how to do basic things, like chopping up vegetables and cooking rice, but he mostly just runs out to the nearest 7/11 and snatches up a bento. upon arriving to other countries, he’s dismayed to find that this isn’t the norm.
“what do you MEAN I can’t find a decent balanced meal with noodles and vegetables for $5?? you’ve got to be kidding me. wait… you’re not?”
talk about culture shock.
Yoru is neutral on sweets, but he adores anything with red bean in it. he’ll eat his portion of taiyaki faster than you can blink, and then sneak glances for more. manju, oshiruko, etc., he loves it all. don’t look at him when he piles red bean paste on his dessert. it’ll embarrass him.
he also likes sour stuff. he’ll go around base snacking on dried umeboshi (Japanese pickled plum). he once offered some to phoenix, in a very rare display of “kindness”, but once phoenix tasted it and his face scrunched up in terror, everybody knew what yoru’s intentions were.
Yoru is very weak to spicy food. Jett will hold this over Yoru’s head for eternity.
Yoru loves going out on karaage (Japanese fried chicken) runs. he also loves yakiniku (barbecue), but picks very specific restaurants where the smell of the grilled meat doesn’t get onto his clothes. just so everyone knows, Yoru is very protective of his clothes.
speaking of clothes, Yoru loves shopping. whether strolling through Tokyo or anywhere else in the world, Yoru always pays attention to clothing displayed in storefronts and always types in a quick note if he thinks he’ll come back eventually.
Yoru’s style is more of a combo of street fashion, techwear and punk. he likes flashy colors, but there are only so many that match with his hair and most of the time he will settle for black, which he’s an expert at layering with.
on Tokyo Fashion Week, Yoru dresses up and hits the streets, despite not actually attending any shows. the photographers love him.
Yoru is also the type to camp out in front of a store at 4 in the morning for sneakers. except, he doesn’t actually do that. he just teleports in and out with the sneakers.
he does not say if he paid for them or not.
