I post about religious trauma here, specifically evangelical Christianity. This is a prominent theme in a lot of my writing, almost all of which is blasphemous yet earnest fanfiction about jesus.

(cw: homophobia/transphobia)
“Why do we still need pride??”
Because in all 50 states in the US it is legal for Christian schools (or any private religious school for that matter) to expel LGBTQ+ students (including aro and ace, anyone who’s not allo cishet) the moment it’s found out their LGBTQ+
Christian schools can also expel students for wearing pride merch or rainbows, or being an ally
Christian school teachers and students can say homophobic and transphobic slurs in class without consequences and encourage the use of these slurs
They can promote, encourage, and even expect a hatred and dehumanization of all LGBTQ+ folks
I attended two christian schools in high school (I homeschooled outside that), one was a small Baptist school with 60 high schoolers and the other was the largest Christian school in the state (protestant/non-denominational), and they both had a policy that they would instantly expel anyone who was LGBTQ+ or “promoted it” (pride pins, being a strong ally, etc.) and forced LGBTQ+ students into the closet, and this is sadly not uncommon in religious schools
This needs to end

I told you so. I told everyone this would happen. I’m staying in my state because I love my family and I’m about to lose the right to marry. Don’t tell me the SBC has no power just because they aren’t in office. Don’t give me bullshit. They have money and manpower.
Also, bad headline. It’s not a ban on gay marriage, it’s rolling back the ruling that states had to treat us as people even though the elected people in power think our sex is icky. If I want to marry I will have to move at least ten hours away from my parents, and I will have to move back when they are old. Here in my state, we will never get it back unless we get it in the constitution now.
Fuck this theocracy.

thinking about how even gay rights just. aren’t taken seriously by your average well meaning liberal. i’m thinking about how coworkers a few jobs ago just chuckled when i said i didn’t want chicfila bc of their donations to anti gay efforts. more recently, a trans girl who works at my gym told me that her bosses wouldn’t let her hang a pride flag in the gym. This is despite it being a place that is largely queer and a strongly ‘liberal’ soace, because “conservatives go here too.” At what point do certain ideas become unacceptable? at what point do we stop having conversations about queer rights because yes we all know gay people deserve rights? “conservatives come here too!” okay and you’re okay with that? you want that? there’s people who will be made uncomfortable by something as simple as a pride flag and you’re okay with that? you’re accommodating it? have some fucking conviction! do the minimum!
#i don’t expect people to take down their crosses and church tshirts and cover their tattoos for my comfort#so why do people cater to whiny conservatives?#(you know why)

if you’re in my asks telling me that i’m defending sexual assault. if your only two settings are “none of my boundaries have ever been violated” and “sexual assault” then you are not a safe person. you are the person that post is about and for. you are the person i am begging to understand nuance. i’m thinking about like. i don’t like having my butt touched. sometimes in the heat of a moment an excited partner grabs my ass. that’s a violation of a boundary. but i’m not gonna fuckin break up with them for it. and this concept branches out. i tried bottoming a few times for partners. i thought id like it, i didn’t, and i felt kind of uncomfortable with the interaction later. those partners didn’t “assault” me, we tried something and it didn’t work. once or twice a partner has tapped out and i didn’t notice at first so they had to tap harder. this isn’t assault, they didn’t accuse me of abuse, we had a conversation and they understood it was a mistake. all of these are circumstances where a boundary has been broken or a line has been crossed, but not a situation of intentional harm, assault, or abuse.

"God never gives you more than you can handle" is survivorship bias. People who got more than they could handle are dead.

I've seen a lot of talk in the vein of, even if you're not a Christian, you have to admit that Jesus was a wise teacher/a brown hippy socialist/a cool guy, your problem with God only applies to the God of the old testament, but Jesus gave us a new covenant which is better, “Jesus is my homeboy, but God has a lot to answer for” and I just really disagree with that take. Yes, I think that telling people to be kind to their neighbors is a good thing, but…
Incomplete list of things I think Jesus* was wrong about:
That you should always walk the extra mile, turn the other cheek, and be passive and obedient in the face of mistreatment and abuse
That the world was going to end before the year 100 A.D.
That there is only one god, one true religion, and that venerating other gods is wrong
That those who don't follow God deserve fire and death
That Christians should spread their gospel and try to convert everybody in the whole world to Christianity
That you should place God as your highest priority, even over love for your own family and neighbors and your own well-being
That the best way to deal with injustice is to wait for God to end the world and let Him sort out the chaff from the wheat
That Jesus had any special power to perform miracles or heal the sick or raise people from the dead
That Jesus had any unique insight into God or the nature of reality and the world
That people who believe in God will be saved from death
That it is just for a supremely-powerful God to save all those who follow Jesus's teachings and believe in him, and only those people
That you should forsake your life and livelihood and material possessions and family and all sources of happiness, apart from God
That prayer will supernaturally grant you favors from God or grant you insight into truths about the world that you could not have discovered by yourself or through other means
That mental illness, suffering, and misfortune are caused by demonic forces
That everybody should aim to be meek, be like a little child, be poor and powerless and helpless and at the mercy of those greater than themselves, to erase themselves, and to die, and that this is the path to a good and meaningful life
*Allegedly Jesus taught these things. We cannot be 100% sure what the historical Jesus actually said during his lifetime, but these are all at least things attributed to him in the Bible (which is not a historical document but which nonetheless is the best source we have to use to try to guess what the historical Jesus might have actually believed and preached).
Additional things the historical Jesus almost certainly never said, but which Christians teach, that I think are harmful and wrong:
That humanity is/was doomed and/or damned and that Jesus died to save us/forgive us/erase a debt
That Jesus rose again from the dead
That everything in the Universe was created by and is maintained by a supernatural force
That that force became human around about the year 0 to recapitulate our broken human nature
That humans can't make our own decisions about how to live our lives and need a supernatural force to tell us what is right and what is wrong
That eternal conscious suffering torment exists after death
(Catholic-only edition) That Mary the mother of Jesus lived a life free of any kind of mistake, and that she lived and and died a virgin

Seeing all the apocalypse in current events means nothing supernatural. The text is literally just “top four basic things that scare humans on a primal level”. Times with famine, plague, war, and death had happened before. It was an already present pattern that humans evolved to recognize and develop fancy anxiety about. We’re just fancy pack animals that can plan ahead for years.
#ex christian#religious trauma#i love figuring stuff out#the rigid presbyterian in me does love debunking spirituality#i love you rational explanations#more importantly i hope this helps someone who is scared rn
