you ever have a eureka moment on a fic you’ve been stuck on for over 6 months and read it back and realize youve been inadvertently adding that exact theme in subconciously the whole time and you have the scaffolding already built to make something beautiful and heartbreaking out of what you’ve already written. forget drugs!!!!!!! this is where its at baby!!!!!!!!

If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking...

Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?

Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?

Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?

Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?

Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist's choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren't immediately obvious?

what is your favourite sense to incorporate in your writing and why?

smell. It’s kind of involuntary to smell things, plus smell is tied incredibly to emotion.

if i tell you that lightning is sparking around a character’s head when theyre mad-- like ooh, cool, spooky, whatever. if i tell you two characters are arguing and the other gets a whiff of ozone like lightning is about to strike?? maybe its just me but that feels more intense!!

also also!! the amount of emotion you can have with smell -- if i tell you rainstorm in the morning before elementary school in autumn? you remember that vividly and how the air smelled. you remember, like, your grandma’s perfume, popcorn at the movie theatre, the smell of your cousin’s house on a holiday, the seaside etc. these all have intense emotions tied to it!!

ok so this seems to be a like, audio answer but i’m in a quiet office and i dont feel like subjecting y’all to my hillbilly accent quite yet so i’ll just ‘read’ it to you by going over why its my fave!!

Link holds the kid’s hands, sees the way his ring finger turns in just like Link’s; sees how his pinky is crooked just like Link’s is; sees the fine bones in the back of his hands that press against his skin like piano strings when he moves, just how Link’s does; and presses those precious knuckles against his mouth. Not to kiss, just to cherish close like a breakable, vulnerable thing. Wild doesn’t know delicate. He does not know being held gentle or a touch that is not a sword’s bite or a kick in the ribs. These dear hands are sacrosanct.

I don’t know it was that time of night where artists get the ‘there is something wrong with me’ disorder and go off the hinges and i channeled that into something tender and loving and i think that’s ok. hands get me, okay? and found-family closeness and comfort with touch even more so. wild and twilight kill me even worse so this is a triple-threat of why writing this made me lose my marbles a little.

what headcanon will you keep implementing in your fics, even if canon ends up contradicting it?

they have no qualms about being touchy with each other, warriors is morally grey, and a bunch of em are trans or gay. i love link being a good guy, like, of course, but i love it when they get a little flavor to em, like when u sear a piece of meat when ur cooking it. except the flavor is moral ambiguity. the other two are self explanatory.
