I will say: No matter the criticisms I have regarding Veilguard, Rook is my beloved. I love & adore Rook endlessly, they deserve to retire early and enjoy marital bliss with their RO <3

I could go on endlessly about Rook and Varric's relationship but I think it comes down to this: What if your own faction (family) thought you'd gone too far and very strongly advised you to "leave for a while" and a random guy (who just so happens to be a bestselling author) recruited you to save the world but this guy believes in you and thinks you capable and worthy of his cause (the fate of thedas) and he acknowledges your personhood (beyond faction value/alignment) in a way that makes you feel seen and appreciated and wanted – and then he's killed by his friend right in front of you and what do you do with that? Where does your love go, what did his faith in the goodness of his friend amount to? Solas/Varric/Rook, the story you could have been.

I'm honestly so baffled by the fact that Rook gets to decide whether or not Emmrich becomes a Lich? I understand that player agency is important in RPGs, but in terms of execution, they could (should) have chosen a more subtle approach. How did Rook react to Emmrich's fear of death? What did they say when Emmrich revealed that he wants to become a Lich? How much does Emmrich trust Rook? How close are they? How much time and care did the player invest in Emmrich as a character? Does Rook have a good enough idea of Emmrich as a person? Is Rook in a relationship with Emmrich? It's a choice the player should build up to through previous decisions and conversations, not something that's just handed to you. It feels... clean and lazy in a way that does not do the weight of that choice justice.

Replaying DA:TV and I think the story would have benefitted from giving Rook their own "companion"/personal quest, one that ties into their faction and the incident that got them temporarily kicked out of their home. It would have a) helped to flesh out their character and motivations and b) given the companions an opportunity to support and help Rook in the same way Rook's been supporting them. We are TOLD why Rook joined up with Varric, we are TOLD how Rook feels about their temporary exile, but we don't ever witness the emotional fallout of getting thrown out of your own home. A few lines of dialogue cannot possibly account for how miserable/angry/desperate/bitter/homesick etc. Rook must have been depending on how the player wants to approach the aftermath. And it would have strengthened Rook's bond with Varric, who chose Rook for the same reason Rook's own people turned their back on them, and thus embedded Rook's backstory more firmly in the main story – the emotional payoff (devastation) in act 2/3 would have been divine (if you know, you know).

Controversial opinion, but I don't mind that Rook is a fairly preset character. It takes a very specific kind of person to actively choose to save the world despite great personal risk. It would be strange if Rook did not have a selfless streak. They were not seemingly "chosen by Andraste" and before the failed ritual and their connection with Solas, they did not play an instrumental role in saving the world in the way that only a Warden can slay an Archdemon. Varric chose Rook for a reason. I understand why it feels restrictive to some players, and I'm not trying to say that criticism regarding this topic is invalid, but I do get it from a storytelling perspective.
