Wickham Headcanon
Has anyone ever considered that Wickham might be the "natural child" (i.e. bastard child) of Mr Darcy senior?
First we have him raised alongside little Darcy. Class distinction was a big freaking deal at the time and it would be rather strange to have them together so much. Yes the children of your steward would interact and play on occasion but F. Darcy clearly recalls it being a close relationship. Then we have the school situation. Educating the sone of your steward as a gentleman? We aren't talking about the son of a wealthy tradesman trying to become landed gentry here, we are talking about the son of a man who runs an estate. Someone who works with their hands a bit more than with papers. Someone, well, much lower rank.
Then to me we come to the biggest evidence. Among the landed gentry it was a totally normal thing for second or third sons to be encouraged to enter the church and provided with a living for this. Usually a very well compensated one. Either this or they would be encouraged to enter the military to make their own fortune. After all, how can we have a landed elite if all the sons inherit? Now look at what George Wickham receives on the death of Daddy Darcy:
He was given a living(parish, money to take orders, and income) that was "The best living" even.
Who does that? What man of rank and status takes on the expense of fully education a stewards son, and pays for him to take orders, and sets him up with a comfortable life and good income for life? A man who is embarrassed that his indiscretion became known. A man that is trying to pay back the social blackmail of his servant.
Think about it. Mr Whickham senior discovers his wife is pregnant, and then figures out by whom. Maybe she has been infertile? Maybe he catches them at it, maybe his wife is chatty about it, who knows. The point is that HE KNOWS. Darcy Senior wants to keep his reputation. We see years later that the Darcy family is well thought of in their area. Being known for seducing the wife of your steward would be awful for your reputation, not to mention embarrass the family of your wife who is descended from a "noble titled line". So you do what you can to mitigate the problem. You take on the responsibility of Godfather, raising the boy alongside your heir. You send them to the same tutors, the same tailors, the same schools. You arrange a good living fit for a second true son in your will. You probably pay off your steward to keep his blessed mouth shut. And you NEVER SPEAK OF IT AGAIN. The boys grow up, and your steward dies without telling the boy he raised. You die without ever speaking of it, confident that you have done your best by them both, and secure that they love each other as brothers. You are fond of George and Fitzwilliam both. You love them both. You did the best you could to fix the mess you got yourself into.

I will always prefer Wizards Is A Job over Wizards Is A Species as a trope.
Wizarding should be something you work towards. Being a wizard is like being an architect, or a painter, or a chemist. It’s something that makes your relatives ask “So are you still doing that or do you have an actual job now”

It's honestly amazing how easily life offers you side quests when you've got your eyes open for loose threads and enough free time to start pulling on it. Today we learned just how unbelievably, implausibly easy it is to snatch a baby seagull.

People's reactions to my small talk post have really made it clear to me how much people think they should be able to opt out of society whenever they find parts of it boring or inconvenient.
"If someone engaged me in small talk I would just ignore them because it's pointless." Cool okay that would get many people fired.
"If someone engaged me in small talk I would just tell them that it's none of their business so I'm left alone." Wow impressive you're really showing that random stranger who asked you if you think it'll snow tomorrow.
"Why don't we ban small talk at work and school to help with efficiency?" Because we're not automatons, life is not just about efficiency, and asking your coworker how their weekend went or your classmate if they got stuck in the subway delay this morning isn't harmful or bad.
I recognize that there are people who are not capable of doing small talk or engaging at all verbally with anyone in a casual way, but some of the ways that some people have reacted feel a lot more like the "we don't owe our friends a ride to the airport or help moving" type vibe.
Community and society are built not just around our small group of extremely close friends and family but also our casual acquantainces, our coworkers, our classmates, the people with engage with professionally, the people with see at clubs or group lessons or religious meetings, the people we stand next to at bus stops.
And being autistic or ADHD or depressed or anxious or anything else doesn't mean that you get to opt out of society without consequences.
If the person sitting next to you at your knitting club asks how your day is going and you tell them to fuck off because you don't believe in small talk, you have just made this space less welcoming and safe for them, and you have cut off an avenue for yourself to meet someone. I'm willing to bet that that person will never try to talk to you again, and they'll probably tell other people what you said, and the space will become less friendly to you, all because you were unwilling to say, it's going fine, and you? or not great. I'm not great at small talk, but I'd love to learn more about what you're knitting instead or even I'm sorry, I'm having a long week and just need a little quiet right now.
