Hi Zi, recently I grew a strong interest in hanfu, but I was worried I would wear it “wrong”. Are there any ways you could match a hanfu incorrectly? In my case I have a ruqun with daxiushan and Ming pifeng, but I usually see pifeng with Ming aoqun. Can I wear this combo without it being weird or inaccurate? Generally, do hanfu youth often mix clothing from different dynasties? I don’t want to be too historically inaccurate and wear hanfu badly.

Sorry! I’m the anon from before, I just wanted to clarify, it wasn’t a daxiushan top, but a waist high ruqun top but with really long sleeves, (大襟衫) I am not good with the terminology. :( Sorry again for the confusion.

I actually found a hanfu street style photo that looks like your description of a waist-high ruqun with a Ming pifeng, and the combination looks quite nice! (x):

Most hanfu wearers usually combine items from the same dynasty, but it’s not a strictly enforced rule, especially if you’re wearing hanfu casually. I think it’s fine to mix items from different dynasties for casual wear. It’s for formal occasions like weddings that I recommend sticking to traditional, “historically accurate” coordinates.

I personally think it’s cool to see the mixing of different historical styles, as it’s another way of expressing creativity. After all, hanfu youth are already bending the rules in many different ways - here are just a few examples:

1) Wearing hanfu innerwear such as zhongyi (left) and moxiong (right) as outerwear (1, 2): 

2) Wearing hanfu pieces in uncommon ways, such as tucking the ao top inside the mamianqun skirt, when it’s usually worn untucked (x):

3) Wearing unorthodox prints and patterns, like these mamianqun skirts printed with impressionist paintings (1, 2):

4) Mixing hanfu and non-hanfu pieces (which I wrote about here), like a yuanlingpao with shirt & tie (left), or a beizi & moxiong with jean shorts (right) (1, 2):

And then of course, there’s the entire sub-genre of modified hanfu and hanyuansu (hanfu-inspired fashion) :P So, I encourage you to feel free to be creative!
