TV MEME: [6/10] MALE CHARACTERS → DANIEL PIERCE
"We wanna believe that the brain is all powerful. That there is nothing that we can't learn, nothing we can't conquer, if we just set our minds to it. But despite the brain's elegance and efficiency, there are some things that the power of the mind can't do. Sometimes when we are faced with an intractable problem, it's not the brain that can solve it, it's the heart. "

“I assume you saw a doctor after the incident to check for damage?” Of course she must have, it’s pretty much protocol. He’s been around law enforcement enough to know that. “Were they able to find anything?”
Because if it’s not a physical injury, it’s a mental one.

“Mm.” Daniel listens to what she’s been saying and catalogues it, filing it away. “It’s not uncommon after a traumatic event to relive it through hallucinations, intrusive thoughts, or flashbacks. In a way, it’s like your brain is trying to process what happened to you. It’s especially common amongst war veterans and law enforcement.”

“I don’t know. A while, I guess? Ever since that case, I keep— seeing her.” Grace rubs her hands over her knees. “It’s no big deal. I mean, I’m probably just not getting enough sleep or something.”

Daniel can read her resistance in her posture and the way she avoids his gaze, and he understands it. He's been in similar positions; distrusting, hesitant, aggressive. Of course he hasn’t been through the same thing, but he knows the signs and knows the symptoms and damn if he isn’t good at his job.
“Lisbeth,” he says, gently without treating her like she’s made of glass, because clearly she’s not. “I’d really like to help you. I know you don’t have any good reason to trust me, and I’m not going to pry if I’m overstepping boundaries. I just want you to know that I’m here to help, not to hurt.” A pause, then, “Have you talked to anyone else about what you’ve been experiencing?”

Lisbeth is silent for a long while— she’s not at all eager to divulge anymore information. Especially when she knows the lingering aching every time she walks or moves, along with the repulsive images and phantom pains from his rough hands she recalls every time she gets a look at her tiny form in the mirror isn’t a mystery by any means.  Her eyes remain fixed on her bony hands in her lap and she mutters.  “A few months.  I guess.”
