There is this post about how Guild Wars 2 does these middling overall stories with such, immense bright spots it never touches again, and without even thinking about it one in particular leaps to my mind.

The 'fractals' of Skywatch Archipelago. It's SOTO's starting map for goodness sake, and this little bit of lore is completely miss-able if you don't talk to a few of the NPC's around the starter camp. See, the wizards use fractals to test scenarios, with living test subjects that exist for only as long as the scenario takes to play out, then pause-able indefinitely at leisure. Save, that's not what happened this time. This time, in part because magic was restructured with the end of the dragon cycle, the fractals have stayed summoned, and for lack of a better word are now real places with real people. Real people who suddenly went from whatever was going on in their lives at the time in their own little world to floating hundreds, (thousands?) of feet/meters/whatever in the air. Plucked out of place, and in some cases out of time, and just have to, live here now, as refugees. It's mentioned a few times that the wizards are going to help, but, these people just have to, suddenly exist in a completely foreign reality, and just have to accept that because the spells went sideways and whoops you're not expendable anymore, they now have to make a life. I'm just sitting there like, you had all that as the backstory for this map, and the way you designed it, the thing people remember most is making a key for the next map. I'm just... what?
