the end of s3 sees a lot of our core characters taking action to put their best moral foot forward and correct their past mistakes. in the last four episodes:

jon makes the deliberate decision to trust his friends and allies after realizing that not doing so has gone very badly and it won't happen naturally for him anymore

martin decides to start being active rather than continually passive and responsive and executes a very successful gambit to get elias arrested

melanie restrains her anger and complies with martin's request to not kill elias

basira, like martin, decides to stop being passive and no longer let things slide around her and aims to take control of her life and improve her situation

and you know what the direct results of those choices are?

jon's decision to trust appears to be received as too little too late, because the next time he speaks to any of those friends and allies they've lost almost all trust in him while he just keeps giving and giving it to them for little to no returns

for both martin and melanie, getting elias out doesn't actually do anything, he just gets replaced by another monster. martin got himself significantly traumatized and melanie ignored her instincts and they have basically nothing to show for it.

basira choked down her fear and kept her head level and got herself out of the hellish situation juuust in time to leave her partner to get stuck in an exploding building

which is probably why they're all doing really really well in s4
