May Origin Drabble
It felt like ages ago when May had woken up to explosions, screaming, and destruction. As a child, she knew about the omnic crisis, but she never thought that it would come to the small town she lived in. In the end, she was the only survivor, or atleast she thought. May had found her lying in a ditch, she was smaller then a loaf of bread and barely alive, but somehow the German Shepherd has survived, just like her.
“I’m sorry Dakota, but you know you aren’t allowed inside” May said to her German Shepherd. In the time since she had met her she had grown big and strong, which May felt was unfair because it seemed like she hadn’t grown at all. Dakota whined, but complied and curled up underneath a bench to shield herself from the rain. “Hey, this is your fault, maybe if you hadn’t got into the beef jerky the manager wouldn’t have banned pets"
May entered the small building, it was a small convenience store that she worked at. As she walked in she noticed that no one was there, the thought that she could maybe try to sneak Dakota in crept into her head, but it was gone as soon as it came. The manager had cameras set up in the store, so even if he isnt there he knows whats happening. May sighed, It’s a boring job, but it is necessary. She needs the money to support herself as well as Dakota, and also to get through college. She was studying to become a veterinarian, which was not an easy task, but it was what she wanted to do. She had a love for animals, and if she could help save even a small fraction of the animals that needed help, she would feel like she was making a large difference.
May sighed and started tapping her fingers to the beat of the music playing on the stores radio. Another slow day, not surprising considering the amount of rain there was. The bell on the door rang as two men walked in, “Hey”, May said lazily. She was required to welcome everyone who enters the store. The men didn’t reply, they just began looking through the isles. Eventually one of them walked up to her, May put on a smile, “are you ready to check out?” As May said this she noticed two things: 1. he had no groceries and 2. he was pulling a gun out of a duffle bag. He whipped the gun out and pointed it at her, “Raise your hands in the air”, he said in a calm voice, “If you scream or try to call for help I will shoot.” May complied, raising her hands into the air. Inside her head, she was frantic, the only thing she could think was “Oh crap oh crap oh crap”. The second man walked over and reached his hand into the duffle bag, pulling out a roll of tape. He made his way over to May and grabbed her arms. “Sorry to do this,” he said as he bound her arms, “ But we cant have you squealing to the cops right after we leave, but hey its better than dying right?” Suddenly, a voice came on over the store’s speakers. “Oh, you don’t have to worry about that, the police have already been notified and are on their way.” May’s eyes lit up as she heard the voice. She had forgotten about the video cameras, never had she been more happy to hear her managers voice. “Fuck” exclaimed the man holding the gun, “What do we do now?” “Don’t worry,” the other man said as he grabbed May, “We can still use her as a hostage.” Suddenly the front door burst opened as a large brown figure rushed in. May held her breath, she knew that it was Dakota. Dakota tripped the man holding the gun as she rushed by, she ran up to the man holding May and sunk her teeth into his leg. He screamed, and reflexively let go of May to swat at the dog. May used the distraction to kick him in the back of his knee, causing him to topple over and hit his head on the floor. May was about to cry out in success when suddenly there was a loud shot, and then a whimper. May froze, and slowly looked over to where Dakota had been standing, she was laying there, blood pouring out her side. Before May had time to react, she was knocked onto the ground. She felt the man who had shot Dakota begin kicking her, repeatedly, It was painful, but thats not what she was thanking about. She just wanted to get to her puppy. She hadn’t noticed that the kicking had stopped. She weakly peered up at where the man had been standing, but there was someone else, she couldn’t tell who it was, just that they were someone else. She looked back over at Dakota, and then let herself pass out.
May stood in a city, completely wrecked and covered in rubble. She was standing over a small frail dog, at the verge of death. There was a ringing in her ears, it bothered her but she couldn’t think of a way to get rid of it. She closed her eyes and clamped her hands over her ears, but it didn’t help. She opened her eyes too find her self in a bed. “Huh?” She thought, “Where am I?” The ringing sounded like it was coming from a timer, but she was too tired to find out. Suddenly she felt a weight press down at her waist, looking to her right, she saw the head of a dog looking at her. “Hey Dakota,” she said, “Wait” everything came rushing back to her. She sat up in bed to look over at where Dakota had been shot. Her back leg was gone, replacing it was a metal leg that went all the way up her thigh. “Aah, you’re awake”, a voice said. May looked over to see a blond woman walk in, her voice had an accent but May was to tired to figure out what kind it was. The woman walked over to the timer and stopped it. “Sorry about that,” she said, “I accidentally left this in here.” “Its alright,” May replied, she observed Dakota’s leg, “Did you make this?” “I put it on,” the docter replied, “Its just a prototype, and this was the perfect chance to use it.” May goggled at it, she had no idea that something like this existed. “I looked through your reports while you were healing,” said the doctor, “ I noticed that you were studying in the medical field.” “Ya,” said May, “I’m working to become a vet.” The docter smiled, “Well May, I have a proposition, I can teach what you need to know and get you the license, and you can work for me and help me discover new treatments.” May’s face lit up, “Really? You would do this for me?” The doctor nodded, holding out her hand for May to shake it “I am Angela Zeigler and starting today you will be my student.” Tears started to well up in May’s eyes, with her other hand petting Dakota, she shook Angela’s hand.
