The Somnath Temple, located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Gujarat, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, considered the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The temple holds immense historical and spiritual significance, with its rich history marked by multiple reconstructions after destruction by invaders. The present temple was rebuilt in 1951, whose consecration was done by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
This first Hindu shrine on the sun-kissed shores of Gujarat has a story pass over centuries of resilience. No one is present who does not know about the Somnath temple. One of the most visited Hindu trip centers, the town of the Somnath temple is said to have the country's first naturally formed Jyotirlinga. There are 11 other very favourable jyotirlingas in India: Mahakaleshwar, Kedarnath, Omkareshwar, Shrisailam, Trimbakeshwar, Rameshwaram, Vaidynath, Bhimashankar, Vishwanath, Nageshwara and Grishneswar.The shrine is a heaven for Shiva devotees,with the person who the highest loyalty and peace are achieve. The Supreme God is dedicated here in the form of lingam and has an interesting story about its creation.
The Somnath Temple's history is a narrative of destruction and reconstruction, spanning centuries of invasions and rebuildings. It's believed that the temple was first built 2000 years ago, with subsequent constructions by various rulers. A notable event in its history is the sacking of Somnath by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026 CE. 
Best time to visit somnath
People usually come to the Somnath temple for darshan only during winters.
From October to March, it is good and comfortable to go for tourism as the weather is satisfactory. But the temple remains open throughout the year.

The story of somnath jyotirlinga
Long ago, there was a divine king named Prajapati Daksha, who was the son of Brahma himself. He married his 27 daughters, who were beautiful stars, to the bright and shining Moon.The grandeur of the daughters and the glory of the 
moon complemented each other. However, Chandra loved one of his wives, Rohini, the most, and neglected the rest of his wives.This made them very sad. All the 26 girls together went to their father King Daksha and told him how Chandra Deva was favouring only Rohini and ignoring them.

The reconstructed temple was found in ruins in the 19th century and the present temple uses recovered parts of the previous temple along with significant artwork.Some new panels have been added to the new temple and some have been joined with the old panels, the colour of the stone discern the two. Panels and pillars with historical artwork are found on the south and south-west sides of the Somnath temple.
