Working with SSENSE for this moment reminded me that style isn't just about what you wear — it's about how you carry your story in every thread, every glance, every breath.

For this KATSEYE x SSENSE collaboration, it felt like more than just a photoshoot — it became a space for us to share who we truly are beneath the surface. Each of us opened up about our motivations, our dreams, and the reasons we keep walking this path. Being able to do that alongside the members I’ve grown with — people I admire, laugh with, and lean on — made this project even more meaningful.

Most people notice the heels first, or how I don’t flinch under neon lights. What they seldom see is the map I’ve already drawn in my mind — every corner, every exit. My name is Sophia Katseye. I don’t correct the pronunciation; let them learn the hard way. A lifetime of strategy, never apology. I was born December 31, 2002, in Queens, New York — born to Filipina parents, raised on a mix of jazz, aspiration, and ambition. I speak English and Tagalog fluently, and yes, my faith is Christian. I grew up watching my mother, Carla Guevara-Laforteza — renowned in Philippine theater — occupy stages I only dreamed of. I wasn't handed opportunity; I absorbed it from the wings. 𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒

THE HISTORY I CARRY

Before Dream Academy, I was part of Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE — the Netflix docuseries that put over twenty hopefuls through an intense 18-month K-pop training program in Los Angeles. It wasn’t just about singing and dancing; it was about discipline, mental strength, and learning to keep going when everything felt impossible. Being part of that journey taught me how to push through exhaustion, how to support my teammates, and how to find my own voice even when the pressure was on. It was tough, but it was the foundation I needed.

When I moved on to The Debut: Dream Academy, I wasn’t starting from scratch. I had already learned what it meant to be part of something bigger than myself. Dream Academy was a competition, and I took it seriously — staying consistent, focused, and true to who I am. Finishing first wasn’t just about winning a title; it was proof that all the work, all the struggles, had been worth it. Debuting with KATSEYE, the first Filipina in a HYBE and Geffen global girl group, means carrying the story of everyone who’s ever dreamed of this moment — and knowing that the journey is just beginning.

KATSEYE

KATSEYE is a six-member international girl group made up of Manon, Daniela, Lara, Megan, Yoonchae, and me — Sophia. We were formed through The Debut: Dream Academy and officially debuted on June 28, 2024, with our first EP, SIS (Soft is Strong). Our name comes from the cat’s eye gemstone, which shines with different colors depending on the light — a perfect symbol for how each of us brings something unique to the group. The name was chosen from a list by all of us, and Lara suggested changing the “C” to a “K” to make it feel cooler and stronger, which really stuck with us. That small change helped shape our identity and gave us a name that feels bold and distinct.

Our fandom is called EYEKONS, a blend of “eye” from our group name and “icon,” representing the connection we want to build with everyone who supports us. Debuting with SIS (Soft is Strong) wasn’t just about making music — it was about showing that strength can come in different forms, sometimes quiet and steady. Being part of KATSEYE means embracing all those layers — diversity, growth, and resilience. We’re just beginning our journey, but we’re ready to grow, shine, and share our story with the world.

"Debut" was our first single, released on June 28, 2024. It's a pop track that embodies confidence and unity, reflecting our journey and the bond we've built as a group. The song was written and produced by Ryan Tedder, Tyler Spry, Grant Boutin, and Omer Fedi. The lyrics express our self-assurance and the strength we've found together, with lines like "Love me once, I know you'll love me twice" and "I don't need nobody tryna tell me how to run it." These words capture the essence of KATSEYE — bold, unapologetic, and united.

Recording "Debut" was an unforgettable experience. Stepping into the studio with Ryan Tedder was surreal. He encouraged us to embrace our power and not hold back, creating an environment where we felt free to express ourselves fully. The music video, directed by Gregory Ohrel in Medellín, Colombia, showcases our energy and chemistry, bringing the song to life visually. "Debut" marked the beginning of our journey, and it holds a special place in our hearts as the song that introduced KATSEYE to the world. 𓇢𓆸
