why your grades aren’t the most important thing in the world
story time!
when i took calculus one, for the first semester i was super sick and in-and-out of the hospital and missed a lot of the foundation stuff, so pretty much all of the class went completely over my head. i didn’t understand it whatsoever. around february i has a 56% in the class, and luckily by may i was able to bring it up to 72%. did i do shitty on the final? yep. did i get the lowest class grade i’ve ever gotten in my life? yep. did it bring down my GPA by a bit? yep. do i still low-key despise math because of that class? yep. but you know what else? i can look back at that class and see all of the hard work that i put into it. i know that i studied my butt off for that class even though i didn’t want to do it and it felt pointless since i had missed so much of the class already. but since i know that i tried my best, i don’t even mind that i barely skated by in that class. because i’m damn proud of that final grade of 72% because it’s better than the 56% that i had for most of the class.
so with finals and report cards coming up in the next few weeks, don’t fixate on that one number. because here’s the thing, if you focus only on getting a perfect grade in the class, you will get stressed and anxious and are more likely to procrastinate because it feels impossible. but if you focus on just trying your best and don’t think too much about getting a perfect grade, you will feel more at ease and the good grades will come as a result to that positive outlook. for example, instead of saying “ugh i only have a 70% in this class it’s going to be impossible to bring my grade up”, try saying “i have slacked off in this class, that’s fine, i just need to work my ass off to bring it up and then i will feel better about my grade.” it’s okay if you didn’t do as well as you’d hoped, everyone has that one class that just kicks your ass. so don’t fret. take a breath. you got this.

just start. do a single math problem out of the 20 you have. one page of reading and youre done. try to just place one item where it belongs. research that one thing you need for your paper. go over a powerpoint slide for that lecture youre confused in.
i promise you doing one single action feels better than doing nothing at all. take 5 minutes to do just one small task thats been staying in the back of your head.

how to avoid education burnout
have 3 achievable goals a day: having a laundry list of things to do everyday is super unrealistic, and you just end up feeling bad about yourself because you didn’t accomplish your goals for the day.
leave your sundays open: i love sundays because they’re my day to chill out and catch up on school work that i wasn’t able to finish during the week.
recognize when you’re at your emotional limits: forcing yourself to get work done when you are unable to comprehend your study material does not benefit anyone.
learn how to say no: people will ask you for your time and it will stretch you to the limit, whether it be at your job, in your extracurriculars, or in your personal life. know when to step back and say no.
take care of yourself physically: take breaks, go for walks, shower regularly, get enough sleep, eat healthy, see your friends
celebrate your accomplishments: go out to eat with friends after a big exam, indulge in a night off after a busy week with some netflix and wine
make a study plan beforehand: it can be daunting to see how much work you need to put in to a class or task beforehand, but this allows you to spread your work evenly so you don’t become overwhelmed.
learn how to ask for help: it is very rare that people make it through school, whether it be high school or university or any graduate program, without needing the advice of others or just a kind soul to vent to. find that person.
never forget your hobbies: you will need things that keep you sane. if you love to play music, write, play volleyball, or cook, make you sure you don’t lose these things. they will become your escape when times get tough.
log off from time to time: it is exhausting to be constantly connected to social media and your email. just physically disconnecting from these for a night to take care of yourself can really help you clear your mind.

Actual things my Russian teacher has said this year
“Imagine my confusion when I arrived in Russia not being able to read, and seeing the word “pectopah” everywhere. It sounds like somewhere ghosts eat”
When a kid in my class was struggling to do the rolled R sound “Oh so that means you can’t do any bird calls? I pride myself on my bird calls. I speak bird better than I speak Russian” and proceeds to show us all of his different bird calls.
When I asked him to pass me my water bottle from the front desk he shouts “VODKA” and smells it “Actually it just smells like lemons. LEMON VODKA”
“Tom, your Cyrillic handwriting is worse than a 7 year old’s and you’re only writing “Tom” “
“The Щ character sounds just like a train. Shch shch shch come on, do it with me” and then forces us to make a train around the classroom going “shch shch shch“
Upon seeing that he’s late to dismiss us “You’ll be Russian to your next class! HahAA!”

The point of studying isn’t to get good grades
I mean certainly, it’s a huge part of studying
But in my opinion studying is about learning and growing.
We surround our lives with “omg i have to pass this exam” but not with “I’ve been granted this opportunity to learn new things about the world we live in”
So my advice to you
Study to learn not to pass an exam
