Peter Thomas Anthony Manuel, born 13th of March 1927 was an American-Scottish serial killer who was convicted of murdering a total of seven people across Lanarkshire and southern Scotland between 1956 and his arrest in January 1958, and is believed to have murdered two more, nine in all. Prior to his arrest, the media nicknamed the unidentified killer "the Beast of Birkenshaw". Manuel was born to Scottish parents in New York City; the family moved to Detroit, Michigan before migrating back to Scotland in 1932, this time to Birkenshaw, Lanarkshire. During his childhood, Manuel was bullied. By the age of ten, he was known to the local police as a petty thief. At the age of 16, he committed a string of sexual attacks that resulted in his serving nine years in Peterhead Prison. In 1955, he successfully conducted his own defence on a rape charge at Airdrie sheriff Court. On July 11th 1958, Manuel was hanged on the gallows at Barlinnie Prison by Harry Allen. His last words are reported to have been: "Turn up the radio and I'll go quietly".

Robert Pickton, also known as the “Pig Farm Killer”, was a former multi-millionaire pig farmer who was charged with the murders of seven women in British Columbia, Canada. Robert would lure his victims, who were prostitutes, to his farm where he would handcuff them, rape them, strangle or shoot them to death, bleed and gut them, run their corpse through a wood-chipper, and feed the remains to his pigs. Some of the human remains were grounded up and the resulting mince was mixed with pork mince from the farm and packaged to his friends and family. When police later searched his farm, they stumbled upon skulls stuffed with human hands and feet, teeth and jawbones, and bloody clothing.
In jail, Robert confessed to an undercover police officer posing as a cellmate, “I was gonna do one more, make it an even 50. That’s why I was sloppy, I wanted one more. Make…make the big five-O.” This suggested that his victim count was as high as 49. Robert was convicted by the jury and is currently serving a life sentence.

Peter Tobin.
No one, save the killer himself, knows how many people Peter Tobin has murdered. His arrest in September 2006 was for the murder of Angelika Kluk, a 23-year-old Polish student working as a cleaner at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Anderston, Glasgow. In May 2007, Tobin was found guilty and sentenced to a minimum of 21 years’ imprisonment. But poor Angelika was only the last of Tobin’s victims.
Born in 1946, Tobin was a troublesome child who was sent to an approved school at the age of seven. Between 1969 and 1988, he married three times, each marriage lasting three years or less. In 1991, after the break-up of his third marriage, Tobin moved from Scotland to Margate in south-each England. With him went 15-year-old Vicky Hamilton - alive or dead. In November 2007, her remains were found in the back garden of the Margate house where Tobin had lived. A few days late, the remains of Dinah McNichol were found in the same back garden. Like Hamilton, McNichol had been missing since 1991, when she had been hitchhiking home from a music festival at Liphook, Hampshire. For over 26 years, no one knew what had happened to either of them.
During that time, Tobin moved from Margate to Havant in Hampshire to be near his four-year-old son, a child of his third marriage. While living there, Tobin raped two 14-year-old girls at knife-point, having forced them to drink strong cider and vodka, and then attempted to gas them. He was arrested, pleaded guilty and sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment, of which he served 10 years.
For the murder of Hamilton, Tobin was sentenced in December 2008 to a minimum of 30 years’ imprisonment; for McNichol’s murder, he was sentenced in December 2009 to life imprisonment. Subsequently, Tobin is reported to have boasted in prison of having killed 48 people in all.

What is your chance of escaping a serial killer?
Stephan Harbort conducted a study where he inteviewed over hundred serial killers and their 107 surviving victims, as well as police reports to find out what your chance of surviving a serial killer is. According to his research, you have a 15.9% chance of escaping once the killer has attacked you or kidnapped you.
However, this percentage can vary depending on several factors. You have 43% chance of escaping the killer, if you don’t get fatal injuries, 36% chance of escape if you fight the attacker*, 15% because the killer thought you were dead, 8.4% because you managed to escape, and lastly 4.7% if you outsmart the killer.
Some serial killer have admitted that they let submissive victims go.
*Note that Stephan Harbort says that self defense only works if the victim fights back aggressively, not mildly. It will most of the time make the attacker annoyed and thus make the situation worse. In 26.7% of the cases mild self defence only makes the situation worse. In only 17.6% of the cases, victims escaped.
Stay safe❤︎

Bresha Meadows, the Ohio teenager who killed her father after he allegedly terrorized and abused her family for years, is finally home.
On Sunday, Bresha, who is now 16, was released from the residential mental health facility where she spent the last six months. Her case attracted national media attention, and opened up a conversation about how black women and girls are treated by the criminal justice system when they claim self-defense.
Bresha was 14 when she fatally shot her father in the head while he was asleep. She and her siblings alleged that her father, Jonathan Meadows, 41, was physically and verbally abusive toward them, often threatening them with the same gun Bresha fired. Her mother, Brandi Meadows, called Bresha a hero, and told reporters that her husband beat her ruthlessly in front of the children.
“I believe that she saved all of us,” she said.
Prosecutors charged Bresha with aggravated murder, and sought to try her as an adult, which meant she potentially faced life behind bars. Ultimately, she was tried as a child, and last May, she pleaded true to a charge of involuntary manslaughter, the equivalent of guilty in juvenile court.
She was sentenced to a year in juvenile detention, with credit for time served, as well as six months at a mental health facility and two years of probation. On Sunday, she was released into her family’s care.
Her record will be sealed and expunged when she reaches adulthood.
“She lived a life no child, no adult, no human being should ever have to endure,” her attorney Ian Friedman said in court. “She grew up in an environment where every adult failed her. … This did not have to happen.”

The Lizzie Borden Haunting
On August 4th, 1892, someone took an axe to Andrew and Abby Borden inside their Fall River, Massachusetts home. Though police suspected Andrew’s daughter Lizzie, a jury acquitted her of the crime. The gruesome murders made international headlines and inspired the famous rhyme:
 Lizzie Borden took an axe
And gave her mother forty whacks.
When she saw what she had done
She gave her father forty-one.
Given the gory history of the Borden home, it’s hardly surprising the building has a haunted reputation. Strange events at the property include the sound of a woman weeping, muffled conversations in empty rooms, and shoes shuffling across the floor. One maid reportedly quit after seeing the indention of a body on a bed in Abby’s room.
Ghost Adventures and Ghost Hunters both investigated the home, as have several other paranormal investigation teams. Prefer to explore the property yourself? Visitors can tour the old home, now a bed and breakfast, or spend a night in the room where Abby was brutally murdered. For those who can’t travel, ghost cam subscriptions are also available.

Lizzie Borden’s Lawyer’s House Haverhill, Massachusetts
This house belonged to Lizzie Borden’s lawyer during the time of the murders of Mr. and Mrs. Borden. In 1995, a family bought the house and moved in, unaware that it was haunted. Doors would mysteriously open and close, there were odd noises, and the family dog barked at a door that the family had never opened. A month later, the family moved out.

The obol (ὀβολός) was an form of currency used in ancient Greece, but it wasn’t always shaped like handy little coins. According to Plutarch, the Spartans shaped them into impractical bars of copper and bronze to discourage wealthy people from keeping too many of them in their homes.

Hundreds of love letters between two gay World War II soldiers were found and are being made into a book. In one, one of them wrote, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all our letters could be published in the future in a more enlightened time. Then all the world could see how in love we are.”

In December 1978, Brenda Spencer had asked her father for a radio for Christmas. But come to that day, she was given a .22 caliber rifle with 500 rounds of ammunition instead, which would be used against the children at Cleveland Elementary School a month later.
Brenda had told police, “I asked for a radio and he bought me a gun.” When asked why he might have done that, she answered, “I felt like he wanted me to kill myself.”
