Today, we’re sharing some photographs of what was either a very, very good picnic, or a very, very bad one. This 1926 photograph documents the traveling companions of Charles Augustus Belin (1877-1931), picnicking near Tuscon, Arizona. They were in the region because Belin had relocated to the state for his health after contracting tuberculosis in Chile while buying explosives for his business, the Aetna Explosives Company. After hiring a meteorologist and a geologist to locate an ideal homesite, free of dust and other aggravations, Belin had a large, Mediterranean-style mansion built on eight acres in Tuscon. While he was in search of health, Belin found a new family. Rosetta Carson Schwab had been widowed after her first husband died while flying across the English Channel, and married Belin shortly after his arrival in Tuscon. His new wife and her four children would soon join him in this new home.
Belin would not find health, however. After finding his first home unsatisfactory, he relocated to a second new home in 1929, this time on 175 acres of land just outside the city, in Wilmot, Arizona. Still troubled by dust there, Belin attempted to assist in funding a project to oil the country roads surrounding his home. While the city and another wealthy resident agreed to the project, it came too late for Belin. He died on February 19, 1931, two days before the $200,000 bond measure was approved.
