night in the woods is a game that feels cozier to me than basically any game that has been described as a “cozy game” and i think a key part of that for me is the bittersweetness. possum springs is cute and autumnal but it’s also a dying rust belt town. mae spends her days exploring and hanging out with her friends but it’s in the shadow of her being a college dropout who will be expected to find a job. every feeling of warmth and nostalgia exists in spite of looming existential dread and decay. the main cast is deeply lonely, but they’re alone together. that juxtaposition is what’s crucial to the feeling of “coziness” to me. the world will never be entirely pleasant and wholesome, but so often we struggle to carve out these pockets where we can feel some sense of peace, even if it’s something as simple as goofing off with your friend in a dying mall, or messing around in the woods, or practicing bass for a band that will likely never release any music. warmth seems to feel most comforting when it’s providing shelter from the cold. that’s what makes night in the woods feel so special to me, and why i’ve kept coming back to it. it’s in the tagline of the game: “at the end of everything, hold on to anything.”
