Graduation Day Surprise

A/N: A little flashback inspired by my graduation day 🎓✨

“I give you the class of 2022.”

Sixty minutes ago, you stood proudly with the rest of your classmates as all of you proceeded to toss your caps into the air, cheers deafening the whole venue.

But now, you sighed and hung your head low.

The rest of your family was here, but him. Shawn, your boyfriend, was unfortunately absent. He was the other important person you wanted the most in the world to be here, sharing this moment with you, but he, unfortunately, was busy working. You understood his obligations and tried not to hold it against him a single bit, although to say that you weren’t a little hurt would be a lie.

Your thoughts were suddenly interrupted when a pair of familiar hands covered your eyes, leaving you entirely in total darkness, “Shawn?” You peeled the pair of hands off and wasted no time spinning around.

“You’re here!” you squeal excitedly at seeing him with a bouquet of your favorite flowers in one hand. The singer was quick to gently drop the bouquet and open his arms for you to jump into, not staggering a single bit as you collided with him a little too eagerly.

“You really thought I’d miss your special day?” He chuckles as he wraps his arms around you and presses you closer against his chest.

“Well,” you start, your voice muffled by his shirt, “You did say you have long hours at the stu—”

You’re cut off by your own squeal when he squeezes even tighter and leaves your feet dangling in the air. His name comes out of your lips as a laugh while you kick and wriggle, all to no avail, and soon his laugh, soft and subdued, is mixing with your own.

Giving you one last, bone-crushing squeeze, he’s generous enough to finally settle you back on the ground, “Never gonna miss out on any of your special days.”

“I still can’t believe you’re actually here,” you giggle as you stand up on your tiptoes, clutching gently onto the collar of his shirt to bring him down to you. At that moment, his smile was more evident than before as you tug his mask down past his chin before your eyes shift to meet the other, lingering for a second. You let out a little breathy laugh before your eyes shut, you tilt your head slightly, pressing one light kiss against his lips, and he’s quick to reciprocate as his lips move gently against your own.

Even after all this time, a heat wave still appears over your cheeks. However, soon, Shawn breaks the kiss and smiles down at you, “Happy graduation day, my baby,” He mumbles, voice low, velvety, and you’re hanging onto every second of it, “I’m so proud of you.”

When the sun sets on 21 December – the winter solstice – people looking up to the sky will see Jupiter and Saturn closer than anyone alive has ever seen them before.

It will be the first time that such a sight has been seen for 800 years.

“Alignments between these two planets are rather rare, occurring once every 20 years or so, but this conjunction is exceptionally rare because of how close the planets will appear to one another,” said Rice University astronomer Patrick Hartigan in a statement.

“You’d have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226, to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky.”

The approach of the two planets has been going on since the summer. As it reaches its peak, between 16 December and Christmas Day, they will be separated by less than the width of a full Moon.

“On the evening of closest approach on Dec 21 they will look like a double planet, separated by only 1/5th the diameter of the full moon,” said Professor Hartigan.

“For most telescope viewers, each planet and several of their largest moons will be visible in the same field of view that evening.”

The two planets should be visible to anyone on Earth, as long as the weather allows an unrestricted view. But the best visibility will come about an hour after sunset – when the planets will appear low in the western sky – and will look better nearer the equator.

For anyone who misses the astronomical pairing, there will be another chance to see the sight in 2080. After that there will not be another opportunity until after 2400.
