I really, really, really like how grrm subverts the young adult protagonist expectations with arya. chosen one enough to just pick up a sword and be adept with it? while being cutesy clumsy? NO! you’re going to have to practice and stumble and poke yourself and get hurt before you get good at it. Big sword with no strength training? NO! learn with a skinny one like the child you are. go on an adventure as a princess in hiding, its harrowing! hang out with the lower rung of society and forget about them once you’re back in your high castle? NO! understands social stratification and how cruelly it mashes those it deems low and weak like a boss. have 50 boys pining after you? NO! a ragtag of bigger boys than you who bully you. adventure takes you to different lands and you lose yourself along the way and never come back? NO! you’re going to come back, you’re always going to come back. different roads sometimes lead to the same castle. every step you think is taking you away from winterfell is actually just bringing you right home. and none of it stops her from her great destiny but actively adds to it.

kenny loves hanging out with tweek because tweek always at the very least seems dismayed by his bad choices like usually when kenny goes “i bet you guys 20 dollars i can eat dumpster fish without throwing up” everyone else he knows is like “hell yes brother” but when he does that to tweek he simply becomes so distressed and confused and offers to just Give him 20 dollars to Not Do That and kennys always like “wow tweek…youre a real pal i’ve never thought that not eating dumpster fish was even an option you rule!”

Death Island Spoilers
I’ve already talked about how much I liked the writing for Dylan in Death Island, but the way the movie also hints toward Leon’s backstory and foreshadows the shit that goes down with the BSAA in re7/8 was well done, in my opinion. It was also pretty intriguing, especially seeing Chris and Claire’s reactions compared to Leon’s.
Dylan (correctly) points out that in the end, all of them are just pawns for the rich and powerful, taking orders from the men at the top who, according to Dylan, don’t actually care about saving people. While we don’t know enough about TerraSave to really make assess that accuracy, we do know what Dylan was ultimately correct about both the DSO and the BSAA.
For Claire, Dylan points out that TerraSave doesn’t really do anything to prevent bio-terrorism, rather they put band aids on the wounds caused by bio-terrorism; “they offer bandages instead of real solutions.” And Claire defends TerraSave, pointing out that there’s nothing wrong with helping people, but Dylan hits her back by poking at a perceived insecurity, pointing out that she’d rather sit on the sidelines and help people after the fact than get her hands dirty (like Leon and Chris).
Earlier, Chris had snapped back and claimed that they were protecting the innocent. Dylan then comes for Chris’s most vulnerable insecurity– that no matter what Chris does, he always ends up “getting someone killed” in his war against bio-terrorism.
And Dylan reads Leon like a book: “Hear we have Leon S. Kennedy, working hard for people who lie and cover up the truth [reference to Raccoon City], who propagate the endless cycle of battles he keeps fighting. And you’re all burnt out from it.” To which Leon replies, “Yeah, well… it’s a living.” Unlike Chris and Claire, Leon doesn’t even try to defend the DSO. He knows better than anyone else there that he’s just a pawn– that’s who he was to the government from a beginning. Leon doesn’t really want to be here, but hey, at least he’s being paid, right?
This actually says some interesting things about the characters: we finally have an acknowledgment that Chris does loose someone on every mission for the most part and he carries that guilt with him constantly. We even hear him talk about Piers earlier, trying to give Jill motivation to keep going and not let herself be consumed by her grief and reckless need to prove herself. While we never really got to see how Claire got involved with TerraSave, or why she chose to do that instead of working at the BSAA with Chris or something similar, signs seem to point toward the fact that she didn’t want to fight, but she still wanted to help. Similarly, Leon didn’t want to fight either. He’s fucking tired, burnt out, and while that’s featured more heavily in Vendetta, there’s nods to it here as well (obviously with Dylan pointing it out, Leon commenting about how this sucked, he’s going on vacation after this, etc.) but at least he can “make a living” doing this, despite his grievances with the DSO/US government. It’s also sad to see that Leon’s resigned himself to “at least I get paid,” like obviously it’s good that he’s doing better than he was in Vendetta (he seems sober at least, he looks healthier, and is more chipper at least), and this feels like an extension of Vendetta. There, he was upset, realizing that he can’t stop bio-terrorism and feeling like he doesn’t make a difference, but here it seems like he’s come to accept that. Hey, at least he’s coping (seemingly) better now?

Absolutely cannot wait for the dudebro fans to watch Death Island and completely miss the theme of the entire movie. The “secret enemy” of the RE franchise has always been capitalism, and specifically exploitation under capitalism and how it’s tied to the US government. Death Island serves that up on a silver platter; it’s quite literally a meta-commentary on our society.

Thoughts after watching death island (SPOILERS AHEAD)
Chris and Claire can't act like siblings to save their lives
Rebecca is the only character who gets shit done/has common sense
Leon SHOULD not have been able to kill maria that easily
Those bitches were not NEARLY thankful enough for Rebecca saving them
I lost my shit everytime Leon said some cornball ass line
"look who it is... Whoever you are." WHO TALKS LIKE THAT
Capcom doesn't know how human interaction works
Literally no dialogue between two characters felt natural I'm sorry 😭
Chris and Claire didn't even tell each other 'i love you' when they thought they were about to die
Jill and Rebecca carried, they never stopped serving cunt
I did appreciate leon finally getting arm hair
JUSTICE FOR CHRIS' HAWAIIAN SHIRT!!
Gone but never forgotten
That's it for now but I'm sure I'll think of more later

BREAKING MY SILENCE: I strongly dislike Ada Wong as a character and I think she was poorly written.
#dont get me wrong she had potential to be cool#but she literally exists to be a foil to leon#and shes a stereotypical femme fatale#ada wong#leon kennedy#resident evil

I love how the serennedy-chained-together scene in the original versus the remake went from "wow there's something very lgbt happening here" to "I cannot believe I just watched them have gay sex on my screen"
