I'd like to think that Boomer and Butch are both athletes, but the distinction is that Boomer is more into playing team sports (football, maybe basketball or soccer) while Butch is more into individual-based sports (swimming, wrestling, boxing, maybe even gymnastics). This works great for my characterizations of the two. Boomer wants to feel like a valued member of a functioning team for once, and maybe the smallest part of him wants to be remembered for something worthwhile. Butch, on the other hand, who's constantly playing the reluctant yes man to Brick to keep the peace, just wants (or needs) to be on his own.
