I was told by a friend of mine who recently completed the same masters program that ChatGPT is a great resource to do quick citation formatting. And out of curiosity, after finishing a project with 30 sources, I figured I'd give it a try to see if it was as reliable of a time-saver as she said.

I carefully checked all of the link urls and ordered them according to my end note references, then pasted the list of links into ChatGPT and asked it to format them according to Chicago style.

Not only was the output completely inconsistent in its formatting (dates were sometimes parenthetical, other times written out, other times omitted completely while organization names were incorrect, and sometimes wavering between APA and MLA formats), but the list COMPLETELY FABRICATED AUTHOR NAMES AND PUBLICATION DATES. It cited one of my sources as being written by a man in 2021 when it was actually written by a woman in 2025. These errors were EVERYWHERE throughout the list.

And yet THIS is the product that companies and institutions are tripping over themselves to integrate into their work? Absolutely bone-chilling.
