The Florida Panthers should not win the Stanley Cup.
For Oilers fans, it’s unfortunate having to face the same team in the SCF two years in a row, but what has irritated me the most is that it had to be Florida. Not just because of Sam B*nnett’s head-hunting ways and the others’ hard, dirty style of play — that’s a conversation in its own right about favouritism and officiating in the NHL that I’m not going to get into right now, but for reasons that extend outside of hockey. It’s about politics. Hear me out.
It’s no secret that a sport primarily dominated by rich, white men is going to be filled with right-wing conservatism, but no club is as loud and proud about it as the Panthers are. This is a team that purposefully waited until Tr*mp had taken office to visit the White House in February of 2025, a trip that realistically should’ve taken place over the 2024 summer months during the Biden administration. We’ve all seen the pictures. Appearing happier than ever, with their red ties and dressed to the nines, smiling like they won the lottery. Pictures taken on Tr*mp’s golf courses, a custom Panthers jersey embroidered with Tr*mp’s name, Tk*chuk’s “I’m one of the few Americans that love [their] country” speech. From an administration standpoint, the recent suspension of Doug Cifu, the Panthers’s vice chairman, for his very public and online quarrel with a Leafs fan where he tweeted, “Eat shit 51st state anti semite loser. Israel now and forever. Until every last Hamas rat is eliminated” is all so very telling how deeply rooted the extreme conservatism in the Florida franchise is.
When pride jerseys were introduced into the NHL, the Panthers were among the handful of teams that had players opt out of the pride warmup jerseys, citing ‘religious beliefs’ as their reason to not participate. They were also not particularly vocal when the pride tape ban (later reversed) came in 2023, a stark contrast to the Oilers who have never shied away from their allyship. I could sit here and list all the ways the Oilers have shown more than just league-issued one and done support to minority communities, but I’ll just leave it at the fact that Edmonton is proudly the founder and home of pride tape. If that’s not enough, the team’s current win song is Pink Pony Club. If that doesn’t say it all, well, I don’t know what will.
My point? “Sports shouldn’t be political.” Wrong, everything is political, whether we want it to be or not, and the Florida Panthers are about as right-wing favourable as it gets. They are getting coined “the MAGA of the NHL” online lately, and it is not without reason. Every year the NHL sees an expansion in its fans — tenfold during and following the playoffs. Theoretically, the Panthers win The Cup. Then what? Another visit to the White House? Another public display of support for Tr*mp? Are they really going to shake his hand again with everything happening in America? What type of fans is that going to attract to the league? The last thing hockey culture, and this league needs, is a bunch of insufferable Tr*mp supporters filling up season seats. There are already far too many.
Hockey aside, the type of political figures a team publicly shows its support for speak volumes to the values of the team and organization. I don’t care if visiting the White House is ‘tradition.’ Traditions can be broken, the Florida Panthers just don’t care to break them.

That’s all. Just food for thought.

Janeway is still incredible representation
As a young woman, I’m obsessed with Janeway. I imagine her being amazing representation back then, but I think that she’s still incredible representation now. Here are some things that I think still make her unique 30+ years later:
She’s “motherly” and she wants to have children, but she’s never made to feel bad or less than about not having children.
She’s so naturally commanding. There are no conversations about her being a woman in charge, she just is.
She has a mixture of stereotypically masculine and feminine interests and traits. As a starfleet captain, she gets to work a lot with science and engineering but in her spare time she plays gothic holonovels and knits.
She sacrifices her personal happiness with great stoicism. This feels like a trope I see used for male heroes, intended to show their strength of character, but I rarely see it used for female characters
She often argues for the pragmatic stance without being an emotionally closed off person. This is so refreshing since many female characters often argue for the moral and/or emotional stance. Female characters who argue for the pragmatic stance will often be shown as emotionless, cruel etc.
She has very realistic mental health problems and regrets, but she presents herself with incredible confidence. She has the same touch of overconfidence that Kirk has, but seeing a female character possess this trait (without being a villain) is still unusual.
She’s a middle aged woman who gets to be seen as beautiful and desirable without that being the focus of her character. The respect she gets from others is earned by her actions, but her beauty is also acknowledged.
Janeway is good at almost everything, but she isn’t always right and she’s no Mary Sue. She’s so aspirational because she’s so realistic, she is never “chosen”, special or superhuman in any way. She feels like a woman I could know, and it’s inspiring to see an “ordinary” woman lead and do extraordinary things with knowledge and determination.

Can someone… anyone… advise on what TLOU tags to follow that filter out the Joel/Reader fic and the Joel and Tommy thirsting?
No shade. It’s just giving me the squick, and I love this show so much and am SO here for our fav dad-daughter duo. I’ve tried blocking certain tags. Alas that appears to do nothing 😢

ive had this chewing in my mind for a while n i feel like i just need to post it to get it out. (for context purposes let me preface by saying i am a person of colour.) so like, no, white québécois men are not oppressed, especially not in the world of hockey. duh. but at the same time, the way some ppl on this site act revolted at anything québécois (or, “french canadian”, as you so insist on saying) just comes across as really cringe and insincere to me.
like omg…. wow, you hate québéc? you hate the québécois accent? wow, you’re soooo original! should we throw a party? should we plan a parade? get real.

I think I am out. It's too depressing to watch the rest of the cup finals. We're playing a fucking nightmare fascist state and we're going to lose for the 30th-whatever time and they're going to act like MAGA pieces of garbage about it and more Canadians play for American teams than they do teams in their own fucking country anyways and it's never really been about hockey and I hate everything.

To be, or not to be, that is the question. That's not a question, that's a statement. Well, it depends on how you say it.
