sally’s eyebrows shot up. “annabeth?” she questioned, looking at her son curiously.

percy dipped his head, but she caught the smile that flitted across his lips. “yeah, annabeth. she went with me on our quest. on all our quests so far, actually.” he maintained a neutral tone, but sally could hear the tinge of softness in his voice.

suddenly he chuckled, as if remembering something, smiling fondly, “honestly, she was more eager to go than i was.”

sally’s curiosity was definitely piqued now. she’d never seen that expression on her son’s face before, which was significant because they’d grown so close over the years at home and through the strife of it all that she knew every one of his physiological pointers – it was their way of communicating non-verbally when gabe was around, and now here was a look she didn’t recognise at all, all warmth and light around the edges. 

witnessing this soft, unprecedented expression percy was wearing on his face at the present moment made her heart soar. she was so happy for him and proud – he looked like he was finally, properly, growing up. it was relieving to see him experience all these bright, novel feelings and getting himself lost in them, a sign that he was really beginning to reach past the darkness and turmoil of the past. she wondered what kind of person annabeth must be to be able to spark such a change in him and kind of loved her already, just for eliciting such an inexplicable shift in percy.

she didn’t have to ask further, however, because percy launched swiftly into an animated explanation, “sometimes she’s mean for reasons that i can’t figure out and it’s so frustrating, and she’s intimidating, too, when she does that thing where she glares at you when you’ve pissed her off. and she’s really stubborn, too, at all the worst possible times, and it gets us all in trouble.” he scrunched up his nose at an unpleasant memory and glanced at his mum, who was watching him amusedly. clearing his throat, he flushed an obvious shade of pink and grumbled, “it’s annoying,” trying to justify himself.

sally stifled the urge to chuckle. his eyes gave it all away. she knew those were the exact things he liked and admired about annabeth, and she herself was liking this interesting new friend of his already.

“so when do i get to meet her?” sally asked, folding her arms and looking at percy teasingly. his grimace immediately morphed into a grin as he said, “as soon as we get the chance.”

sally beamed at his enthusiasm. he was positively shining. it really looked like the start of a new age.
