Dude's been having freaky dreams about the ocean for no reason. A person says she knows he's been dreaming about the ocean. He is investigating a case where a guy is murderized and an artifact is taken and the thing that was stolen? Bowl with shark people worshipping an ancient Sumerian god. The room he is in. Suddenly smelling like the ocean. Him hearing a footstep. Seeing a Mysterious Figure out of the corner of his eye, being Certain that it is the one that appeared in his dream just hours ago, only to see nobody there when he turns to look... sorry I don't care whether or not he knows he's in a supernatural novel anymore actually. He doesn't even need to accept it as 100% totally Supernatural Shenanigans just please god THINK about the possibility that it could be. Please! I am not asking for much! Just some serious consideration that Maybe this is Suspicious. I think that's a pretty reasonable ask of the character in these circumstances actually.

Okay normally I am Very Patient with characters not immediately jumping to supernatural conclusions in media that features the supernatural. I can extend some grace to characters who look at a bunch of clues which are screaming "werewolves" at the top of their lungs and conclude "maybe there's a weird but not supernatural wolf around," because the characters don't know they're in a werewolf story. But to be honest at present I am. Annoyed. By the main character's insistence on dismissing the Obviously Supernatural Elements.

Sorry buddy, we're on the third book of this series and at this point you already know full well and good that the supernatural is Real and much of it wants to kill you. You have been attacked by wretched reanimated abominations. Alien shrimp from space wanted to stick your brain in a jar. The book opens with you doing magic. I think maybe the Freaky Goings On might possibly be supernatural in nature, and not imagined, and at this point dismissing them is, in fact, Stupid.

the word empathy is WIDELY misused, even in mental health spaces. 

empathy:

is responding to a person’s emotions by experiencing the same emotion as them (i.e. feeling sad when something sad happens to that person, or happy when something happy happens to that person.)

sympathy:

is recognizing that another person is in pain, even if you do not experience that pain, and offering comfort to that person

is showcasing care and support via words and actions

if you need an example of a person with no empathy who practices sympathy and compassion, look no further than data from star trek: the next generation. he doesn’t have emotions at all, but he’s still kind to people and wants to help them.

stop telling people that they’re evil because they don’t experience empathy. stop equating empathy with morality. stop equating empathy with caring. stop saying that cruel people “lack empathy.” stop throwing neurodivergent and mentally ill people under the bus.
