Presentation 1 to Hand in
So, presenting was a bit of an eye opener for me. Having never presented my designs as an initial concept ever before- this was a bit of a challenge going into it cold. In theatre design classes, we made our designs, based off of initial parameters, maybe presented it to the class, and then handed it in. And then got a grade online, and maybe comments about it. For my theatre designs that actually came to fruition and were made into the actual thing- there actually NEVER was a review session of the design (which is something that caused much grief on my end as a student for many reasons). A 3D model and a drafting was expected, but never critiqued until it was too late. As much as I asked for reviews from my department, it didn’t happen until post-mortem, if even. Anyways. I moved onto fine arts my senior year, and participated in formal critiques of my own work and others work. Which, really helped me grow as an artist. So much, that I even dragged my painting professor into the theatre to critique my set that was being built and painted. This project and the freedom to create anything with the guidelines was a bit of a culture shock for me, having been trained to create anything WITHIN the guidelines. If that makes sense? Like, when given a script/concept it’s a lot of “we need this to do this” or “I think it would be really cool to have this moment here.” I think theatrical design, from my learnings (which I am relearning) relied on the labels and the prerequisites which is what a script/director/performer relied on. The really interesting pieces always broke this. SO, I spent a lot of time focusing on things that didn’t need that, and too little of time on things that did need to be fleshed out. Also the general concept of presenting a design was so new to me. So it was really refreshing/shocking/terrifying for me to see all these students present their work in such polished/matured ways, and here I was with a little roll-out and model that didn’t really clearly present what I wanted, but more what it looked like. Within Tuesday- Friday it was a lot of hashing away what wasn’t needed, to what was needed in order to convey my ideas and initial concepts. PROS: I am rather proud of myself for learning a completely new drafting software (which is LEAGUES more easier to learn that the previous software I was trained on). I created a little vignette model that actually didn’t look too awful after a handful of years not making a model. Cons: I think you can get the gist in the previous long paragraph. I’m learning, that’s why I am here.
