Revitalization
Revitalisation is about preserving and promoting the historical, cultural and architectural value of the site, without directly altering the integrity of the building. I want the space to acknowledge the past while also bringing it into the future. A space where it will seamlessly grows with the community overtime.
My concept proposal is about providing an exterior which takes it back to its original state, a more overgrown and natural feel. And an interior that feels modern and inviting.
A timeline of a 10 year plan, showcases the growth of the community as well as the trees and plant life that would thrive within the space, creating a nostalgic and overgrown area.
This concept draws inspiration from the Beinecke Rare book library at Yale University. What it shows is a big glass casing which surrounds the books and bookshelves. This tall and inviting structure creates a beautiful piece of architecture when you first walk into the building. These modern simplistic qualities of the space is what I wanted to portray throughout my design.
So as you first walk into the lecture hall, which is now the extension of the library, you are greeted with this tall, inviting structure, incased in channel glass. The channel glass also gives the space a sense of mystery, as it is a semi- transparent material. Within the bookshelves itself, the library will hold a plethora of rare literature and collections to display. This allows the space to become more of an antiquity and a place to honour and respect our past.  Therefore over the years, as the community grows within the space, it will protect and preserve its history.
The second structure, which is located inside the library, still takes advantage of the high ceiling but provides more of a quiet space. This enables people to still enjoy the beautiful architecture but be able to study or read quietly.
The library is created for the community therefore also caters for all types of people. A Kids area, as well as a technology area have also been added to the space.
To conclude I hope to create a space which revitalises the way we share our knowledge within a library and the community. Allowing us to acknowledge and respect the past, while also bringing it into the future. Creating a space which is natural and nostalgic on the exterior, and a modern, inviting and timeless space in the interior, continuing the site to seamlessly grow with the community overtime.

Since we didn’t have a traditional presentation this semester, here are the two A1 posters that I would’ve presented.

Lighting
When deciding on what lights would best suit the space, as well as the location, I had a look through the Erco Lighting Catalogue, as well as some other research and decided on these four lights.
The Gimbal which allows the space to be easily well lit, this light will be methodically spaced within each zones of the space, creating a nice balance of light and contrast to each area.
The Optic Basic for a luminous spot light, which will be a great feature light for the special edition books that will be on display within the glass structures.
The Quintessence Round for a beautiful task light shine directly onto the desks, giving a nice luminescent area for studying or reading.
The Floor Washlight which will be used as a step light, for safety procautions.

Natural Light
Find the definitions of glare and solar gain. Where might these matter in the Library?
Solar gain
Solar gain in buildings. Solar gain is short wave radiation from the sun that heats a building, either directly through an opening such as a window, or indirectly through the fabric of the building.
Solar gain is the increase in thermal energy of a space, object or structure as it absorbs incident solar radiation. The amount of solar gain a space experiences is a function of the total incident solar irradiance and of the ability of any intervening material to transmit or resist the radiation.
Glare
Poorly-placed lighting fixtures can cause glare, and the effects range from discomfort to vision damage. In simple terms, glare can be defined as the visual difficulty experienced when a bright and concentrated light source is in direct line of sight.
How can you control natural light in the library?
Using materials and colours that bounce and absorb light, Shiny objects and mirrors also cause natural light. Light colours will increase the ambience. Darker colours will create variation. Filter light with panels and textiles eg. certains.
Artificial Light
What light fittings could you use for ambient light?
LED or Ring Lights
Task lighting
Feature lighting
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) – the lower the number, the warmer the white light appears, while a higher Kelvin will appear cooler. Colour temperature generally ranges from 2700-3300K (warm) to 3300-5300 (cool) – and 6500K is daylight.

Revitalization
Revitalization is about preserving the architectural heritage of the site. A way of preserving and promoting the historical and cultural value, without altering the integrity of the building.
My concept is about providing an exterior which takes it back to its original state, a more overgrown and natural feel. And an interior that feels modern and inviting. The timeline of the 10 year plan, showcases the trees and plant life that would thrive in the space, creating a nostalgic and overgrown area. The interior showcases the modern simplistic qualities that I want to portray. This concept draws inspiration from the Beinecke Rare book library at Yale University. What it shows is a big glass casing which surrounds the books and bookshelves. This tall and inviting structure creates a beautiful piece of architecture when you first walk into the building. I wanted my concept to have that same effect, so as you walk into lecture hall, which is now the extension of the library, you are greeted with this tall, inviting structure, incased in channel glass. The channel glass also gives the space a sense of mystery, as it is a semi- transparent material. The second structure, which is located inside the library, still takes advantage of the high ceiling but provides more of a quiet space. This enables people to still enjoy the beautiful architecture but still be able to study or read quietly. The 3D model of the space, showcases the larger intervention the right, in the lecture hall and the smaller, quieter version to the left of the building.
To conclude I hope to create a space which revitalises the building. Creating a space which is natural and nostalgic on the exterior, and a modern, inviting and timeless space in the interior, allowing the site to seamlessly grow with the community overtime.
