So I finally got ahold of a DVD of the 2002 miniseries based on St. Francis and honestly it's pretty solid but it once again writes out Brother Elias.

Elias aka 'Daddy' (literally Francis considered himself the 'mother' of the Franciscan order while Elias was the 'Father' he just gets written out a lot because he was the controversial one.

*His controversies include building a huge cathedral to house Francis' body, was the one who claimed Francis experienced stigmata and was ex-communicated for palling around with Frederick 'I don't think the Muslims are that bad actually' II

Idk it feels very strange to me that all major adaptions of Francis' life 1) don't include Elias 2) Don't really want to engage with the ideals that were central to his life's work- treating poor people as people and engaging with them while also refuses to engage with capitalism by refusing to own anything.

Being his parents' favorite did a number on Jiovanni. There was always a sense of 'we love who we want you to be not who you are'. That coupled with his own gender fluidity makes it very difficult for him to receive love or feel worthy of love. He has gotten very good at giving love, but receiving genuine affection. That's hard.
