looking back at my old ocs for nostalgia's sake, here are some things i've noticed (in no particular order)

friendly tip for people who write stranger things fanfiction with original characters (really prevalent on wattpad, i'm even writing my own), depending on their age, the characters were born in either the 1940s (adults), late 1960s (teens), or early 1970s (kids).

if you want your oc to seem more convincing, i'd suggest choosing a name that was somewhat popular during those times. as a few examples, Donna (#20 name in 1941), Christine (#14 name in 1968, also #35 name in 1979 (when she was named)), and Tracy (#13 name in 1971). for guys, there's always Edward (#17 in 1941), Dennis (#45 in 1968), and Timothy (#21 in 1971).
